The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I know, it's a crying shame. I began my remedy process today by buying the four-disc edition out now, which comes with four different versions: Final cut, director's cut, US theatrical, international theatrical.
So Blade Runner fans, tell me: Which is best? Worst? What's the difference between the US and international theatricals? Most importantly, which do I start with?
It is good, but very over rated. Rent it first to make sure it's your thing.
Too late. I tend to rent most of the time, but big badoosh box sets I'm usually inclined to buy rather than rent. I bought Alien Quadrilogy despite not liking Alien 3 or Resurrection. Why?
Because it looked fucking sexy on my shelf, and when pulled apart was half the length of my room roughly.

"I've never seen this movie but I bought the super collectors edition of it and don't know where to begin."
Seriously, poor thought process there. Start with the theatrical release, realize it's overrated and regret spending that money.
Weird, I just finished watching it for the first time all the way through. I got the Final Cut for Christmas, and I've gotta agree with Doc. The movie's pretty cool but it's way over-hyped.

It was $5 more than the stand-alone version. I'm not that stingy.

Still, you bought a movie you've never seen. I guess I don't see the logic behind it. Do what I said already and get it over with.
EDIT: Come to think of it... doesn't this belong in H/A?
Renting a movie is like 6 bucks. Realizing you like that movie and you want to buy it means that in the end you've spent 6 bucks more than you had to. Buying it, finding out you don't like it and returning it, costs you no additional cash.
Renting it isn't necessarily the smartest, most cost-friendly choice here, Satan.

Stores where you live let you return/exchange opened movies for different titles?

I wasn't sure if advice for a movie viewing belonged there, plus I thought this would eventually turn into a thread discussing the film. But everyone here seems to hate it.
And I often buy movies I've never seen. I usually have pretty good judgment; I think I've only had two blind buys I ended up not liking.

During the holidays there are special gift receipts offered at certain stores, allowing you to return movies that are unwanted. Also, returning a movie and claiming it's glitched can also result in a full on refund or store credit. In some stores if you buy previously owned DVDs they'll come with a warranty. Like, "this disc belonged to someone else so in case that person scratched it or messed it up in anyway we understand and will give you your money back".
Was Blade Runner really over-hyped? Was it a conspiracy? Who's behind this hype machine and why do they overreact? Too much caffeine?
I thought Blade Runner was a fantastic movie and worth every bit of praise I was aware it ever received. Now, if I'm missing the Blade Runner virgin sacrifices and "Best Thing Ever, Ever, Ever" awards, maybe that's what I'm missing, but... probably not?
I'd recommend you either watch the Final Cut first and then the theatrical, or the theatrical then the Final Cut. It depends on which way you want to see it. The theatrical version is what made it popular, eventually, at least. You'll be seeing exactly what got so much attention, why Blade Runner earned so much praise. Then you can watch the Final Cut and see what could have been, what was removed, etc.
Or, you could see the Final Cut first, see what was meant to be, then compare it to what was. whichever. I'd do the former, but that's just me.
It's just that they keep coming out with new versions and nerds get all crazy about it.
Oh, ok. That makes more sense.
The whole thing was only like 30 bucks. Granted, the only two versions really worth having are the Final Cut and Theatrical version, but... oh well. The box is really pretty. Pretty's typically a sort of... "gay" word for a guy to use, but what the fuck ever.
I've seen Bladerunner at the movies twice now, in 01 and now the latest version in 07, so it is fair to say I'm a fan. What really made me a fan was the start - the combination of well chosen music (Vangelis) and the opening landscape sequence just had me sold - it really works well on the big screen, perhaps it is a little wasted on the small screen.
It is good, but very over rated. Rent it first to make sure it's your thing.
OVER RATED?!? This film has been imitated and inspired by many films including anime and you call it over rated?!?
Sure it's 25 years old but the story, music and SFX holds up well. For someone who has never seen it I suggest the Final Cut. Whats funny is for the Final Cut many of the work could have been done when it was originally shot that would have saved time & money.
I'm a huge Blade Runner fan by the way! My gf got me the DVD collector's edition which I think is a liitle over done, plus I have the old Marvel graphic novel, read Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, Dark Noir book, and the PC game that I played multiple times.
I remember seeing the original release in 1982 and the gore in it freaked me the fuck out!!
Why wouldn't people be inspired by original and shitty? Also keep in mind I didn't say shitty, just not great. As great as Romeo and Juliet is a lot of people would not want to see the actual screenplay acted out on stage. They'd be bored out of their minds. However, great stories of two people who shouldn't love each other obviously inspired by the same play exist and sell very well.

If you watch the theatrical release, you can expect to be disappointed.
I'm of the opinion that you can't properly appreciate the film until you've seen it two or three times, so if you guys are calling it overrated off one viewing, I do hereby not take you seriously.

I've never seen it.
Whatcha gonna do now?
Well, I would recommend you watch it two or three times. Then I'd buy you a drink.
BR is a great looking movie with fun actors and is based on a good book. Ridley Scott has his moments too.
But the movie has an ending that insults your intelligence. And it's the kind of movie where the ending matters and the plot is building to a big resolve. When you get to that moment and it's really pretty terrible, you'll realize why people hate on that movie as much as they love it.
I love cyberpunk noir, but I can't stand Blade Runner. At least Johnny Mnemonic sucks at a pretty constant rate. BR gets your hopes up and then poops on your hopes. Then there are doves.

Original and awesome. I seriously doubt there is inspiration from original and shitty.
I'll admit Blade Runner had it's flaws, and lots of them too. Hence the Final Cut.
Well the huge gap it took for them to re-release it after the original Directors Cut DVD didn't help matters much.
Anyway, Blade Runner is a pretty damned good film, overrated or not.
Plus the whole "<insert popular thing here> is overrated" thing? So overrated.
Your mother is overrated.
If you watch the theatrical release, you can expect to be disappointed.
I don't get all the hype.
Time Out referred to her as a "Tour de Force" with the Times proclaiming her as an "Action-Packed Adventure full of twists and turns".
It was amazing.
Time for the Final Cut tonight.
Whatcha gonna do now?
Bravo.
Truly.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

How so? And are you talking original or directors cut ending? The tone is totally different.
I've only seen Final Cut, what happens in the other ones?
And also, the speech by that one guy at the end is brilliant if that's what he meant he can eat a dick.
