I would say no. There are already a shit-ton of new songs to get as DLC and 3 new songs every week for the forseeable future (not to mention full album downloads). You are missing out on a lot of content if you get the PS2 version.

Also: no online play, no true BWT, no character customization. Save up a bit more and pick up a 360, then get Rock Band for that, or you're really screwing yourself over. Not to mention the fact that you're spending nearly $200 for a bunch of peripherals for an obsolete last-gen system. A sequel to Rock Band is pretty much inevitable, and a release of that sequel for the PS2 is very unlikely, meaning you will have a big pile of useless plastic instruments (they might work for the PS3, I'm not sure about that, but buying a PS3 is a fate worse than death).

I would rather play the stripped down version of the game than not play it at all.. but I must agree that missing out on the DLC might be a deal breaker, especially if you're paying relatively the same price. I've downloaded enough DLC within just this first month or so of the game being out to expand it's content by almost 1/3rd. I'd hate to give those songs back. Though when you're doing random setlists on hard with someone on drums, i often wish I could un-download some of that Metallica..

Some Modest Mouse would definitely be good fun.

"The Guitar" by They Might Be Giants also seems like it would be pretty entertaining. Maybe not for the vocals so much.

EDIT: Wait, no, "Experimental Film" or "Thunderbird" would be WAY better TMBG songs for Rock Band.

Honestly, I think the best They Might Be Giants songs for Rock Band would be on their most recent album. The Cap'm and The Shadow Government come to mind.

I agree with both of you!
    Shadow Gevernment, yes.
    Thunderbird, yes.
    Ana Ng, please.

Modest Mouse would be cool but I think they would need to pick as carefully as with TMBG. Some songs are just too much for a fun party game.

I finally got to play Rock Band last night with 3 people. It was beyond fun. We didn't want to stop playing.

The only complaint we had was there wasn't enough songs with female vocalists in the list. Two of the three people playing last night were female and they really didn't have a lot of songs to choose from at the beginning.

Fucking hell. Rock Band is hard to get here in Canada.

The Full box was supposed to come out today, but the Big stores (future shop and Best Buy) got their shipments on Boxing day. Now of course they are sold out and don't know when they are getting any in....

As for the smaller stores (EB, HMV, Independents) They either are pre-order only or just never got any in and don't know if they will be getting any in.

HMV MIGHT be getting some in today or tomorrow, but I'm stuck at work all day. They didn't have any when they opened though.

Maybe I'll just splurge on EBAY and spend the $300+ and wait a fucking month for it. .... or not.... sigh....

How emo is Soundgarden in the 90s? I need a reference point... looking back I think I missed out on tons of being sad about things.
I don't think emo existed before, like...1999. I dunno, my emology is sadly lacking.

Emology is still a young science, so I don't blame you. The earliest point of origin I personally have for emo is 1992's Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate, which is still a good album, though moody as fuck. I don't consider Soundgarden very emo at all, because I imagine them having fun and smiling while performing onstage, which is very anti-emo.
    Guys. Guys.

    Guys.

Midway through Hard (on Learn to Fly), I had some sort of kick pedal epiphany. I am actually good at it now! I have successfully done a few songs on Expert.

    Awesome.

This is how it breaks through! You flounder around and then all of a sudden it makes sense, you learn how to let your foot read the orange bars while your hands read the note gems, and Hard and Expert just opens up to you. I had the same thing. :^:

Multiple anything in a row is killing me. I'm stuck on the tier with Aerosmith and Fallout Boy on expert right now. I can't deal with any kind of snare roll like the break parts in train kept a rollin, or anything over 3 bass hits in a row, like those parts in ride the lightning. I can read the notes well enough at this point, I just don't have any kind of technique to utilize yet. I'm always either rolling the sticks off time, or i think just flubbing the hits entirely.

Is it possible for you to cancel out your own snare hits?

I suspect so. I've gotten much better at pad rolls, and I found that almost every time I was playing too fast instead of too slow. Instead of look at the notes and thinking "I have to hit every single one," think of the long column of notes as a single "roll" note, then go into practice mode and experiment with how fast or slow you roll until it clicks.

I powered through the break part of Train Kept a Rollin' solely by the grace of Overdrive. Dead on Arrival was really, really hard too, though it was the bass kicks that were killing me. Again, it was all slow practice of that basic intro/verse pattern that got me through it. Right now I'm stopped on Don't Fear the Reaper as the only song in the 7th tier on Expert drums, but I'm going to try passing it later today.

And did somebody say "over 3 bass hits in a row?" (Just watch from 3:20 on.)

I would agree on the 'wait until you can afford a new system because it really isn't that much to get one' and disagree on the 'PS3 = fate worse than death'.

Seriously you will get very tired of the songs that come with the game in a few months. And then you'll have spent $170 on a game that doesn't see much play. Or you could wait another month or two and buy a used 360 for pretty damn cheap. And have access to DLC.

The PS2 peripherals are the same as the PS3 peripherals, so you can carry those forward if you pick up a PS3. The gameplay of the PS2 version's pretty much identical to the other versions -- the big loss in my eyes is the simplified BWT.

I dunno if it's so much an "epiphany", but I find I can play drums pretty flawlessly if I can just stop thinking about it. I got some good 200 note runs last night on upper-tier songs on Medium when my brain just shut off and let my arms and leg work. I need to learn to do this on command, like I can do with the guitar.

Also, I got my wife to play BWT with me last night. She's pretty decent on drums (she plays on easy, but we were 4- and 5-starring most songs, and she only failed out once). She kept saying, "Okay, one more song." "Okay, just one more set." "Okay, wait, I want to buy some clothes."

    My wife is so awesome.

So how does one get one's band to show up on the leaderboards and count as a real band? I created one, and started playing, and when I go to the leaderboards it's all, "You must play the game to be ranked!"

Oh man, I was sincerely disapointed at the guitar note track for "Attack" by 30STM. WTF? Why am I playing backup guitar as the lead? I was really looking forward to this song, because the main riff (which you hear playing in the beginning but do not take part in at any point of the song) looks like it's fun to play.... instead the song is just hitting chords over and over...

Well for one the band name can't be taken.

The one I created at Thanksgiving will never be on the leaderboards because someone else was online when they created "Scrantonicity 2" and I was somewhere without Internet.

So... if that's the case, is there a way to rename the band? Basically, I created a band, played with it for several hours, and would like it to show up on the leaderboards. Is there a way to do this without just creating band names over and over and playing with them and then checking the leaderboards to see if they happened to work?

I think the main menu screen has an Options /Edit Data section. The initial menu, where you would pick solo or multi. It is called something not unlike "manage data."

Well, it just erks me because I was excited because if there was a song I'd think would be fun to play with a plastic guitar (from 30STM), that was the song i was thinking. But literally, you are playing backup, not the lead guitar. I always assumed lead guitar is what "guitar" means. It seems, lazy.

If you played GH1 and GH2, you should be used to playing fill-in/rhythm sections. So you shouldn't be suprised.
The Hand That Feeds has you soloing the keyboard/synth section.
Reptilia has you switch off from Lead to Rhythm.
    And so on.

However, if you're just playing the entire song as Rhythm, then it is kind of messed up. I didn't bother downloading any of the 30SM tracks and probably won't.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure someone earlier in the thread (or more likely in the last thread) tried RMA'ing from Canada. They took all his CC info and everything, and when it got to the end it said they could only deliver to the US.
