I got a question before I start up WoW, are private servers not allowed by Blizzard and if not how many people would you guys say use them?
Private servers are not allowed, invariably get shut down by Blizzard after a couple of weeks, and suck horrible shit. No one plays on them, and they are buggy as all hell. It's not an enjoyable way to play the game by any stretch of the imagination, unless $15 per month is too precious to part with, or you have a masochistic devotion to sticking it to the man. In either case, you'd have much bigger problems to worry about.

How does Blizzard shut the servers down, I've seen like 2400 private servers for counter strike that never go down???

Because Blizzard is considerably more aggressive about such things than whoever it is that runs CS servers (Valve?)

I need some help with a graphical issue in WoW, and I thought this would be the best place to ask it.

Well, I recently upgraded to Leopard (Mac OS 10.5), and it didn't go too smoothly (I had to copy my internal harddrive to an external and erase the internal). Since then, my game has been looking like this:
    ScreenShot_010708_235602.jpg
    ScreenShot_010708_235630.jpg

I think the best course of action would be to redownload the client, but I want to know what you all think.

Mine was doing that as well because my graphics card was dieing out. Had the same problem on Neverwinter Nights 2 and Team Fortress 2 as well. Replaced my graphics card and it all works fine.

And I just resubscribed to WoW, but my old server sucks and I don't feel like paying to transfer either character there elsewhere. Now I need to find a good server and/or guild to go to.

Just like how WoW and Counterstrike are both video games(Cheese and apples are both food) and they are both primarily multiplayer(CvA healthy) that is pretty much where the similarities end.

It says right in the ToS that you are paying the fee to play on Blizzard's servers and only their servers and that private servers are absolutley not allowed. Software liscenses are more restricted than you may think, in fact if you read most EULAs they state you are merely buying a copy of their property and a right to use it as they deem fit, a right that can be revoked at any time they want. People running private servers are doing so illegaly and Blizzard is well within their rights to stomp that out.

They're not private servers as in "only I play here", but rather private servers as in "this isn't hosted by Blizzard". There's usually a bunch of people on the private servers, though not as much as on regular servers.

My buddy played on a private server for a long while - it was how I really got introduced to and tempted by the game. I guess they're always at least a patch release or behind, depending on what's been managed to get cracked, and mods can have unlimited, god-like powers. I remember watching him teleport people from Stormwind to (Silithis? Someplace with a dragon? I was drunk). The private servers are pretty low-pop, and I think different hax are allowed on each one.

There's already a talent that reduces the cooldown of frost spells called ice floes. The new talent is...

Icy Veins (NEW Frost Talent) decreases casting time of all spells by 20% and increases the chance your chilling effects will freeze the target by 10%. Lasts 20 sec. 3 min cooldown. It is now in the Cold Snap position in the talent tree.

Ice Block for everyone, finally, and Mana Emerald has 3 charges when cast and restores as much as an average super mana pot. So you cast it once and can use 2 more for the next two cooldowns instead of resorting to lower gems.

I've only had the game a short while, but have a few questions and figured this was the best place to ask (I considered the GameFAQs boards but after glancing at them...no, just no). I've tried a few websites but haven't been able to find the information in a search.

    1. Is there any way to get rid of the extra Stealth icon that Rogue's get above their action bar in the standard UI? Alternatively, does it have a key binding, or can you only use it by clicking on it?

    2. When I am stealthed, do Elite monsters have an increased chance of detecting me, or is their detection the same as any other monster their level? (Ignoring the ones that can always see through stealth)

    3. Can Horde and Alliance hear each other's voice clips when you do /silly and other voice emotes? I know they can hear each other laugh and such, but so far I haven't had someone of the opposite faction use one where they actually speak. Unless of course they have and the game just blocks it out entirely since I'm not supposed to understand their language.

    4. In Diablo II, there was a /who command for searching someone by their account name instead of character name so you could see which character they're playing. I assume in this game it's not possible to tell if two characters are the same guy unless they actually tell you?

    Thanks for your time.

At one point I was going to get annoyed about the iceblock changes, but then I realized that the vast majority of mages don't seem to use it to any good effect in PvP. Most of the time I see them use it it's simply delaying the inevitable.

On Private Server illegality: I'm sure Blizzard's ToS and EULA are set up so if you make a private server you're using their assets against their permission and thus infringing on their copyright or something similar so they can go after you and/or your host. Therefore any "big" servers will be shut down before long and you'll only find smaller ones last a while. Plus a good deal of private server stuff is reverse engineered so some of it might not match the real game at all.

    1. Ctrl+F1 is the default keybind for stealth.

    2. Not sure, having never played a rogue.

    3. Opposite faction can't hear voice emotes other than laugh.

    4. That is correct, there is no way to /who someone's account name.

    1. If you get a bar mod, you can remove it. You can Activate it by hitting Shift+1 (I think...) edit: oops, F1? K...

    2. When Stealthed, mobs have a higher chance to "see" you the higher level they are compared to you, as well as by distance and if you appear in front of them (180°). These attributes can be modified by talents, potions, certain items, etc. I don't think elites have a higher chance than a normal.

    3. No.

The great allure as I see it, is basically getting "premades" to play around with, as well as the ability to go into areas of the game you can't see without raiding, and getting equipment to mess around with.

Basically, a Premade PTR, but better, except for whatever degree to which the private servers' stability sucks ass.

    General

    * Boat and zeppelin vendors and NPCs are are back on duty.
    * Reduced network latency by disabling the Nagle algorithm.
    * /timetest is a command that can be run to provide information on game performance. /timetest 0 turns the command off. When the command is issued, the next time a player uses a flight master to travel, certain statistics will be measured and displayed at the end of that flight. All weather effects and spawns are shutdown during the test.
    * Effects triggered from being critically hit: Many abilities and talents were changed in 2.3.0 to allow them to trigger from critical strikes that occurred while the player benefitting from them was sitting.
    * Quest givers with blue question marks no longer show up on the minimap.
    * NPC's who you have completed a quest for will display a question mark on mouseover rather than an exclamation point.
    * The bank controls for the guildmaster level of a guild is now grayed out. A guildmaster always has full access to a guild bank and this cannot be changed.
    * A "Withdraw-Repair Only" button has been added to the guild bank controls. If this is set for a guild rank, then that rank cannot actually withdraw funds from the guild bank, but they can still use that daily amount of money for repairs.
    * You will now automatically stand up when attacked, even if the attack doesn’t land.

    PvP

    * Warmasters/marshals in Alterac Valley now increase each other’s maximum health and damage by 20%. This is a stacking effect.

    Druid

    * Ravage: The damage multiplier on this ability has been increased from 350% to 385%.
    * Lifebloom: When this ability is refreshed it will take on the strength of the incoming Lifebloom effect, rather than maintain the existing strength.

    Hunter

    * Arcane Shot: Ranks 1-5 will once again deal bonus damage based on attack power.
    * Aspect of the Viper effect increased. (From 50% of total intellect to 55%)
    * Freezing Trap is no longer limited to one target at a time.
    * Pet leveling speed has been increased.

    Mage

    * Cold Snap (Frost) cooldown reduced from 10 to 8 minutes. It is now in the Ice Block position in the talent tree. This ability will no longer reset the cooldown on Fire Ward.
    * Conjure Mana Gem mana restore variance substantially reduced,(Rank 5 – Emerald) now restores 2340 to 2460 mana and has three charges.
    o Rank 1 - Restores 390 to 410 mana. (Instead of 375-425)
    o Rank 2 - Restores 585 to 615 mana. (Instead of 550 to 650)
    o Rank 3 - Restores 829 to 871 mana. (Instead of 775 to 925)
    o Rank 4 - Restores 1073 to 1127 mana. (Instead of 1000 to 1200)
    o Rank 5 - Restores 2340 to 2460 mana. (Instead of 1136 to 1364)
    * Ice Block (Frost) is now available on the trainer to all mages at level 30.
    * Icy Veins (NEW Frost Talent) decreases casting time of all spells by 20% and increases the chance your chilling effects will freeze the target by 10%. Lasts 20 sec. 3 min cooldown. It is now in the Cold Snap position in the talent tree.

    Paladin

    * Crusader Strike (Retribution) now causes 110% of weapon damage and no longer gains any bonus from spell damage.
    * Righteous Fury: This spell will no longer cost twice the listed mana to cast.
    * Sanctified Judgements (Retribution) now returns 80% of the Seal's mana cost, increased from 50%.

    Rogue

    * Ambush: The damage multiplier on this ability has been increased from 250% to 275%.
    * Hemorrhage: This ability now correctly does additional damage when its debuff has already been applied.
    * Preparation now resets the cooldown of Shadowstep and no longer resets the cooldown of Adrenaline Rush.
    * Shadowstep now adds a 3 second, 70% movement speed increase.
    * Sinister Calling now also increases the percentage damage bonus of Hemorrhage and Backstab by 2/4/6/8/10%.
    * Cheat Death: When multiple attacks land simultaenously, all those resolved after the attack which triggered Cheat Death will now have their damage reduced by 90% as intended. However, the combat log will still report them doing full damage.
    * Hemorrhage: Rank 4 of this ability no longer has its charges consumed by non-physical attacks and spells.
    * Hemorrhage weapon damage reduced from 125% to 110%, but the damage debuff has been increased.

I suppose I should be happy there aren't even more nerfs (I think? I forget what's in this patch, they keep taking so long) but it always makes me shake my head when I look at the Warlock section to see one inconsequential note. Meanwhile other classes are getting buffs every patch as usual.

Thanks for the quick answers to my questions.
Pity I can't get rid of that Stealth icon in the standard UI, but at least now I know it has a key binding so I don't need one on my action bar to use with the keyboard.

So laugh really is the only voice they can hear? No /cry or /chicken or /train?

Not quite true. Warriors got a pair of bug fixes. But I'm sure they are shocked at the lack of nerfs too.
