We had a serious balance talk tonight that only served to cement my thoughts about going ret instead of holy.

Holy paladins just don't scale as good for healing as other classes, not to mention the serious hurt of not having any instant panic buttons that doesn't blow all our mana. My panic button is a DF Holy Light, which has slightly more than 2.5 seconds cast time.

Now if I go ret instead we can have two judgements up on stuff, since we nearly always have me and a prot pally in 25-mans.

Holy Pallies and Tank Druids both (and more I might not know of) have the same "problem:" their power is level based moreso than gear based. This is why as fresh 70s these two classes were singled out for some heavy nerfs. Unfortunately, what this does is plateau these classes faster so they scale even worse, so when the gear curve catches up they're left in the dust.

On the other hand, though, Ret Pallies, Resto Druids, and Balance Druids (and again probably more, these are from experience) are all very gear dependant. Now that the gear curve is so high these specs can start to shine.

I approve of this trend. Having played raid paladins as Holy from MC to Naxx and Prot through TBC, it's time for Retribution to finally have its time. Currently got my ret paladins up to levels 52 and 47, and have already mapped out a started set of gear to aim for for decent numbers as quickly as possible.

Which reminds me. Some months ago there was that armory study showing that something like 93% of all raiding paladins were Holy. Given how much has changed since then, I wonder if there's been any noticeable shift.

Holy Paladin is the only way to go in BC raiding for a pretty good length of time...

Recent changes to Ret Paladin made their gear suck for them. Who needs spell damage on Crusader strike? I hope you liked that 10% DPS nerf in gear that's class specific. They can still push decent numbers (about 80% of pure damage classes) but it's a pretty hard nerf compared to their 10 minutes of fame after the threat changes. Ret gets more and more viable the more gear you acquire but virtually everything a Ret Pally can use is probably better used by a DPS warr or another class that shares their tier piece.

Prot pallies require too much gear to be a viable tank until ~late T5 itemization and, to be blunt, prot pallies are pretty worthless unless they're tanking, and to MT you need to be over geared in comparison to a Warrior of similar gear level. This usually means the Pally is overgeared for the content, is filling a niche roll (trash tank) or is very un-necessary. Anything a Prot Pally can do a Holy/Ret Pally can do while taking more damage and using more mana.

Are really geared ret and prot pallies good? Yes, undeniably so. Holy Pallies on the other hand are always good regardless of how much or little plus healing they have. Gear increases their longevity more than their output. You spam that holy light/flash of light and you like it.

The CS change was a nerf on the low end and buff on the high end. AP scales much, much better then spell damage does. The class specific stuff was junk anyway prior to the nerf.

Prot is more gear dependant, but by the time you get out of Kara it's a non-issue. Given uncrushablity can be done in blues it just requires a little bit more pre-prep time. But I've done SSC, TK, MH with comparably geared warriors without an issue. Would you care to expand on this point?

No, that wasn't the problem. You can get extremely viable through 5-man drops to handle 5-mans and heroics, and viable through heroic and Kara drops for Kara and onwards. The problem wasn't that you needed to be overgeared to MT the content, it was that you needed to be overgeared to kick the established MT out of his spot. Guilds generally have established MTs, and if you want to be an MT, you have to be established as one, by a guild vacancy or getting into a start-up guild or whatnot.

To be on the safe side, any paladin should pick up a decent healing set, and also probably a tanking set if necessary.

the problem with holy paladins is that nearly every t5/t6 fight seems to have some massive horrid AoE damage component or some extremely spikey damage component (or both) which makes holy paladins feel really gimpy

I mean, why take a holy paladin when a resto shaman does so much better?

We tried out a ret paladin a month or so ago, but he was like missing some brain cells or something (we're talking "failed to bubble to save himself on Archimonde") so he didn't make it past trial. But now we've got a new one who isn't retarded and it's really nice. Judgements kept up, melee boost, plus not having to stack the raid with holy paladins just to get blessings means we can take a greater variety of healers, which is nice for our poor priests and druids, who used to get stuck sitting out once one of each was in the raid. And since he came with a mix of t5 and arena gear, he does competitive DPS too. And I even heard him healing some melee in an emergency one time!

So can one of you smarter-than-me foreigners translate the following? It seems cute and I'm curious, but my German stops at "hexenmeister."

Morogrim is an obnoxious fight. Actually, a ton of TBC fights are obnoxious fights. I have finally found a cure to hating-my-character-itis, and that is to play the only race choice available for a class. Shaman-a-go. Horde having better racials for PvP is a bit infurating, but at least I can PvE with comfort.

My enhancement gear is better than both of the enh shaman my raids run, but I end up healing because my resto gear is also better (1480ish unbuffed with 1XX MP5.) Hopefully I can just save up for some nether vortexes and grind up smithing for a Dragonstrike. Guild needs to start actually killing Vashj though.. grumble grumble.

Also Heroic Shattered Halls with an all-forumer group is wonderful, even if Sniperguy tried to kill us all with his powers of dying in 2 seconds. Way to go.

I can imagine LW is cool if you're levelling a rogue and already have a 70 character, could prolly get the whole primalstrike set within a day of hitting 70 with some help from guildies... or am I wrong?

I'm levelling a rogue and the idea of full primalstrike plus both s1 swords as soon as he hits 70 is very nice. :(

My group ended up killing lurker after a couple of tries and then we went to work on Tidewalker. It took a couple tries to get the murloc wrangling down, and then we had a couple of pretty solid attempts that got him down around 60% before someone important getting watery graved and it starting to cascade into a wipe. I did tank him for about 5% in my cat gear which was terrifying since I had to be topped off basically all the time so I wouldn't get killed by crushes.

And yes, that forum SH was a blast, although we did have to get a guild mage to come also.

    Just a quick question:

For a WoW guild to be counted as a PA guild, do I need to... I don't know... Do something...?
Dance a dance, you know.. To seal the pact..?

Also.. I want to gauge the entusiasm for a guild on Sporeggar(EU)..? It'd basically be for decent people looking for other decent people to play with, but then, what guild isn't..? We'll hopefully get into some organized PvP and instances if the populus grows enough...

Since the realm is RPPVP, there would be a certain enforcement of the RP rules, but only in /s. Nothing too hardcore when it comes to the RP...

If you're on the realm (and interested in making a guild), /w Nerium...

That's what I was dreading... But I think I'm going to make it anyway... I mean, it doesn't need to be Penny Arcade readers only, right..? Main reason why I wanted it to be a PA guild, was to create a good base of core members, and then expand from there...

From what I've seen the lolboy population seems to be pretty dismal on Sporeggar, so I have a good feeling about the realm..
