What are my options for arcade-style football?

Ah, NFL Blitz. What an arcade experience back in the day. Incredible sound and a naughty disregard of good sportsmanship made it well worth fifty cents every four minutes. You hardly noticed the gameplay was simplified (or gutted) considering how fast everything moved. More recently, there have been NFL Blitz 20-03 and NFL Street but then the NFL took away their license from Midway.

Next year, EA is pushing out NFL Tour, which looks like a cross between arena football and Prince of Persia (what with all the wall running) but is there anything else? I've got my eye on All-Pro Football but what are my other options coming out in the next year or two?

Blitz is the only arcade-style football game I know of.

Blitz the League was pretty decent. If you haven't yet checked it out, you should.

Aside from possibly a new Blitz, and the already mentioned NFL Tour, that's all I can think of.

EA owns the rights to Mutant League.

EA, make a new Mutant League game.

A Mutant League game on the current hardware would be really really awesome.

No doubt there would be a glorious amount of severed monster limbs littering the field by the fourth quarter.

I don't think it would be much fun to throw footballs at targets for three hours to grind my passing stat.

Pigskin 621 A.D. is quite possibly the best arcade football game I've ever played. Unfortunately it's an old coin-op machine so you're not likely to find it nowadays.

But man, what a fun game.

It isn't out yet, but Backbreaker might be something you would be interested in.

Yes. With full physics simulation it would be glorious and delightfully fun. Plus, I bet it would even appeal to non sports fans.

Come on EA, milk it like I know you can.

Holy shit. When I read about that in OXM, I thought it'd be cool, but that video blew me away. You can download a high-res video at their website btw. The only thing that has me down is that it says specifically that tackles are simulated on-the-fly. It might be a lot to ask that everything be affected by physics and not canned, though.

The Backbreaker trailer looks very nice.

Does anyone get the feeling football AI hasn't improved much? Pop in Madden 64 and compare it to Madden 08 - is there a difference?

Fun Fact: All sports were called football back in the day. Football, in fact, was the word for sports. Baseball was football. Rugby was football. Cricket was football. The name just stuck in europe and the US for their respective footballs.
