SH3 was great until it became a bit of a dungeon crawler. I loved the complete wackiness of the series, so Frank and Mao were completely fine with me.

Fry's carries a surprisingly large inventory of console games, and they seem to have all the tough ones to get. SMT3: Nocturne? 40 dollars new. DDS2? 40 dollars new. When I walked in there I felt like I was in a gaming treasure trove.

The funniest thing about it is I got the tip to check Fry's from the only cool gamestop I've ever encountered. It's like they absorbed a local video game store into the chain and took all the cool people. Anyway, I was looking for DDS2 after playing P3 and I wasn't able to find it anywhere. On top of that, SMT3was listed on amazon as starting at 90 dollars used. I went into the store and happened to voice my frustrations while buying something else and they told me that Fry's normally carries a large inventory of games that are out of date, rare game ports from japan, and otherwise tough to find titles. They definitely weren't wrong.

I bought SH3 on a whim once I learned that it was getting hard to find. Having loved both SH1 & 2, I was pretty appalled at what they turned 3 into. The second that ninja showed up I just turned it off and tried to forget it existed.

Edit: Also, Amazon.com still has new copies of From the New World available, but be warned that the first two are far better... at least from what I've played...

On the contrary, SH3 still has a ton of the same elements the first two games have... including the most perfected RPG battle mechanic yet.

I really detest bashing of SH3, so I tend to get a little annoyed by people being "appalled" at Frank, or anything... because Covenant had Joachim and the Man Festival. That's JUST as ridiculous and offensive.
Frank is 5000 times worse than Joachim for one simple reason.

    He is derivative.

So is Joachim... honestly, bashing SH3 because of Frank is just ridiculous. A game doesn't suck because of one character who gets very little screen time overall. Seriously, guys, go play more of it. It's better than Covenant in a multitude of ways.

Besides, Frank is MUCH better in the Japanese version because he speaks Engrish.

What, exactly, is Joachim derivative of?

Because it's not really a character concept I've seen too much of.

Frank, however, is pretty much a carbon copy of Joachim. And, Jesus Christ, "bashing the game"? Stop sucking the Shadow Hearts series' dick, man. No one BASHED THE GAME. We said "Man, Frank was a terrible character." Because he was.

I don't think I've even seen a copy of SH3... not that I've previously looked for it.

    In Nocturne news:
I finally got around to beating Dante about the head and shoulders. It was easy once he stood to fight. I love how, if you beat him, it shows a cinematic of him being able to kill you if he wanted to and then just having a conversation... but if you lose, you're dead. This devil may just cry.

    My Nocturne news:
I made it to Lucifer and good god is he going to be tough... I thought I was doing alright after I absolutely demolished Kagutsuchi. First thing Lucifer did, as if taunting me, just to show me exactly how much of a bastard he's going to be, he charmed my Titania who proceeded to cast Mediarahan on him. 65,350 I believe was the magic number. If I'm lucky, I can do about 600-700 damage to him per turn after fully debilitating him. That comes out to around 100 turns or so, assuming he doesn't pull a huge dick move and get Mediarahan'd when he's around 5 HP. I know Pierce is supposed to be a big help, but I'm not sure if I feel like getting enough Girimekhalas to give my guys Pierce. Experience is pretty easy to come by at this point, so I might just level up for a few hours to see what difference that makes. It's gunna be a tough one...

    Pulled from an FAQ:

"Pierce is a skill that makes it so you deal full damage, regardless of the enemies' protection"

I did it with the main having Pierce and Freikugel and 2 of my demons had pierce as well. The other was just a debuff/healer.

Freikugel is the next skill my main is set to learn, and I read that you can get Pierce from Marogareh assuming you're pursuing the True Demon ending. Is that true?

I focused a lot on magic, so those two skills on my main plus 2 powerful magic users with force boost and wind cutter and a healer might be enough. I'll have to test it out tonight.

His ultimate attack, Root of Evil, not only deals considerable damage but also, apparently, causes random status ailments. I don't want to look it up for fear of spoilers. Suffice it to say that I felt like a spider, a potential victim of his whim; though this account is not fully accurate.

My Main had Pierce and Focus; I mostly used the demons he brought along for support magic(buffing the party, and debuffing him).

I might have used them to deal a little damage here and there, but it's laughable compared to the damage Main deals out with Focus/Strike/full support.
I was honestly disappointed with Lucifer, difficulty wise. He has ridiculous endurance and a sick spell or two, but he doesn't do any spell that straight up kills everyone(I'd expect him to have at least two). Even DDS1's final boss has one of those.

For plain commanding presence though, he doesn't disappoint. Seeing his arrival put chills down my spine.

I just beat him tonight. What a long fight... Didn't help when he charmed my Titania and she decided to cast Mediarahan on him after doing about 10-15,000 damage...

    Regarding spoilery things:
I kind of agree with you that he was more annoying/tedious than difficult. And I also agree that his presence was undeniably awesome. Right after he says he's going to challenge you, and he gets that smirk on his face, good god, you know you're in for some shit.

Anybody else feel kinda disappointed by Nocturne's True Demon ending? I mean, it's cool to know that you're the most powerful demon and are likely to wage war on heaven, but it just doesn't seem like much actually happened. It most certainly left things open for a direct sequel though, which is cool. I was just kind of expecting the destruction of all reality and the breaking of the cycle of death and rebirth. I guess with those expectations I was bound to be disappointed.

In any case, the game was great. I managed to finish in 58:31 but I only hit 52% in the demonic compendium and I didn't do some of the other optional stuff. Great game overall, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation back a couple weeks ago!

It certainly is a enduring battle, Root of evil wrecked my first attempt at him but the second try was smooth.

It's kind of funny that battle against P3's last boss was more enduring at a 2.5hours session, not to mention I lost the first time. 5 hour investment right there. Underleveled++

    About the ending:
Yeah it was perhaps a bit underwhelming but the path to it all was very epic. I'd say the Freedom ending is the best one, especially with what Lucifer says "So, you chose the same path as I, opting to follow your own conscience and walk the difficult path. Eventually, the true enemy will confront you, as he
did I. Until then, don't lose that power of yours..."
In some DDS1 news, I'm back to my new cycle and working my way though the optional bosses. Currently at the point where I can fight the 4 guardian beasts. Oh man, good thing Serph has Ragnarok otherwise he'd be pretty much useless with his 99 str, 99 agi and beginning stats + some noises everything else.

I did the exact same thing with Serph on my NG+. It's just too hard to get strength and agility noises so maxing them out with level up points is the most efficient method. You've kept his luck really low though right? You want it as low as possible for the uber boss, assuming you're going to fight it.

Yep. Low luck. It's going to be easy to farm magic noises but it's going to be eh getting the team up to speed on agi.

From GameFAQs (Fusion FAQ and General FAQ, respectfully):

    Michael: Cu-Chulainn x Raphael x Shiva
-or- Gabriel x Horus x Ganesha
    -or- Satan x Messiah
-or- Thanatos x Gabriel x Raphael

I've found, occasionally, the spelling of the names in the FAQs differs from the spelling in the North American version.

    For Alice with Medigo:

Fuse Decarabia (Fool) x Principality (Justice) = Nata Taishi (with Medigo).

    Then,
Lilim x Pixie x Narcissus x Nata Taishi = Alice (with Medigo).

The difficult part about this is when you 'check' what the fusion will end up as, more often than not she won't get the skill you want her to inherit. So you have to back all the way out of all the selections, reselect your first Persona, then reselect the second and hope the skill you want appears in Nata Taishi.

It's much easier with 4x and 5x fusions - simply back out once, go back in, check the skills.

Success! After some fiddling with the compendium and tri-fusions, I have two formulae...

Seiten Taisi (Tower) x Loki (Fool) x Abbadon (Devil) = Michael

    and

Seiten Taisi x Loki x Thanatos = Michael.

What is the world coming to when we can't even trust FAQs?

Edit: In case levels somehow affect things - 73 Tower, 63 Fool, 75 Devil and 71 Death.

What Arcana did you make it to?
Death. I basically had her down to 1 attack left, but then she got a critical in and it killed 3 of my team members. Since I was the only one left I couldn't revive anyone, because she went right after me and would kill them before they could even do anything. Then, she enraged me, and then proceeded to kill. And yes, it did take 3 hours to get there. I'm still rather angry.

I might just reload my save from the 26th and level up there so that I can sell things and buy armor and all that.

Really, the last fight made me realize how dumb not being able to control your party members was. Usually you can get in more attacks with your main if you exploit weaknesses, so it doesn't matter so much, but then they throw a last boss that lasts this long with absolutely no weaknesses? Stupid. I spent the entire battle yelling at my teammates for doing whatever they could to try and lose. I'd have Yukari on heal/support, and she'd use wind break a bunch when my entire team was at like half health. She'd almost never use mediarama when I needed that instead of just healing one person with diarahan. Then, she'd heal someone with diarahan when they barely needed healing. She would be on heal/support, and when the boss did moon gown, she'd find it necessary to use garu instead... despite being on HEAL/SUPPORT! The other problem with not being able to control the other characters is the fact that that means the main is the only one able to utilize any sort of items, which just sucks. You're pretty well forced to be the healer every turn, but then you can't even gain your sp back with an item because your dipshit team has no idea that I have a bunch of items for healimg sp!
