So no more teenagers sending complete armies to their certain doom while talking about how much fun it is to be in a war? Boo.

Any word on the music? I really liked the themes in the previous games.

Sadly, I've already read that Isabella (the memory-loss girl) holds some military secrets in her addled head. Chances are the game will revolve around keeping her out of the hands of the enemy.

Well, now we know why the world blew up. Who the fuck tells military secrets to a 13 year old girl?

Maybe if they spent less time gossiping with Hannah Montana there, they could have spotted the meteors and created some sort of laser defense grid. Or just have Grit shoot them down.

He would have done that, but he was too slow.

His artillery shells will fall back down during the last mission, defeating all bad guys for you. Yay.

    One billion steps back!

Clearly they survived the Meterolacaust by living in caves. 'cause they can't go out in the sun due to their lightly colored hair and skin.

The second two are bad guys, I'm calling clones or something, the first escaped from the IRS labs or something, which will be dramatically revealed at some point.

The best part is the first girl is an amnesiac. Yup, the classic "Wh...who am I?" shtick. So you KNOW the fate of the entire world now involves her in some wacked out way.

Why does every anime girl with amensia have a men's coat on that's 6 sizes too big?

    So, for actual serious discussion...

I wonder how this new level up system for units will work out. Unless it was a pre-deployed mission with no bases, the turnaround for my units was fairly regular. Yeah, I'd try to keep them from being destroyed, but shit happens, and you make another tank. Gonna have to see just how fast units rank up, and if it's worth protecting the heck out of your lv3 megatank rather than simply making another one.

In the war room at least, I try to keep low HP units from enemy fire and let it stay on a property for repair or join another damaged unit. Against human opponents, crippled units don't matter much except serving as cannon fodder and jamming up roads with their lifeless bodies.

I'm much more interested in the new CO powers and wonder if it is possible for a unit to gain a defense of 200% again, making it impervious to any fire (AW2 Kanbei + SCOP + HQ/mountain). Bless you, Kanbei.

If this is the video I think it is (I'm not loading it on dialup again) that has the badass music kick in as soon as the player gains control and the battle starts, then this bodes VERY well. And you, sir, are a loon!

I know. I was just reminded how funny it was when bombs and artillery fire had no effect on infantries. Not as hilarious as a lone infantry making 5 tanks explode, but that is Nell for you. She's probably a witch or something.

It's that video, only difference is that it is not nearly as kickass as the music from previous games.

The only CO themes I found were passable and generally not grating to the ears were those of Nell, Andy, Sami, Eagle and Sturm. The rest were either unexciting or ear-bleedingly bad.

I don't like how the units now face the corner of the screen rather than the left or right. It makes it look like they're out of some cheap hexagon grid based war game. Other than that it all sounds good.

Uh...story is one of the main reasons for a style change. If the story is no better than the old style, then all we end up with is trading our goofy but loveable COs for some generic boys and girls.

Don't get me wrong: I think they could have done MUCH worse here, but so far I'm very indifferent to the new characters and style. It's not bad, but it's nothing to go wild for.

However, some really promising gameplay changes are coming, and that is what will get me to forsake currency.

Come on, Lash's theme was great.

Depending on how the wi-fi multiplayer works, I have this awesome idea what to do with it.

Nell's, Andy's, and Sami's themes hold a special place in my heart though. Olaf's theme, though >:(

I liked that aspect of the games. I just always pictured the little soldiers high-fiving each other while being shot to death. It was a unique feel you didn't get in other games, even if it was stupid.

I really like Lin, and I believe she will be my C.O. of choice - especially as it seems likely that she will be Sami's post-apocalyptic counterpart, an infantry specialist. With Lin as, to my knowledge, the only female C.O. we have much information on, it may be too much to hope for, but... I do hope Days of Ruin has a good female cast. It may be an odd series to hope for such a development with, but any signs of a game series from Japan featuring adult female characters that appear to be, in all respects, every bit the males' equal is encouraging.

    mediabj8.jpg

Fuck. Nevermind. I predict that Intelligent Systems will fail horribly in that regard. Oh well. At least Lin will probably be good.

    30346017us1.png

Double fuck. Time-Travelling Protaganist wakes up in the future only to find the world torn apart in a futile struggle, gets rescued by the good guys and is forced into joining them; Time-Travelling Protaganist gets caught in a desperate situation and displays rare talent with command, or has a special technological/magical/paranormal ability that allows him to command armies, so the good guys take him under their wing and train him; Time-Travelling Protaganist goes on to save the world.

    I called it.

Inflated ego from (almost) beating the entire War Room with the worst Commanding Officer. Style points.

I like Sonja more for concept than the execution. In practice, she's a terrible C.O. because one of her advantages is not present on every map, and the other simply does not work against AI opponents. Rather than go through the monumental task of making an AI that is capable of "pretending" to be tricked by Sonja's passive ability, like a human would be, Intelligent Systems just opted to give Sonja a fairly quick-charging brute force Super C.O. Power, which says enough of how badly the counter-intelligence specialist worked in single player Advance Wars.

The concept is attractive, though. Where every other C.O. merely has bigger numbers by some factor, playing a character who is worse in every measurable respect, but has the capability to trick the opponent into wasting units and entire turns fighting phantoms has an undeniable appeal.
