Eh, none of these look interesting to me. In my mind, all they're doing is stopping another week of potential Earthbound.
A new Dr. Mario validates Wiiware.
Although I do agree that, compared to the original titles for XBLA and PSN, Wiiware seems lacking. They need to hurry up and release a ridiculously pretty, balls-to-the-walls SHMUP in the vein of Geometry Wars or Super Stardust HD for WiiWare.
Lost Winds certainly looks like it had a good amount of development time, but I don't know. It looks awfully slow for a platformer.
Some of the best platformers of all time have been slow. See Rayman, Astal, Flashback, and Prince of Persia.

Star Soldier R looks pretty good, I might get that when it comes out, Lostwinds looks kinda boring though, but it does have pretty graphics.
Defend your Castle looks like it gets really repetitive though. I don't know, none of the launch titles look all that interesting, I'll probably wait for reviews before I spend Wii Points on any of them.

Wii is getting Star Soldier R, and there was another Shmup announced recently as well.
It's not WiiWare, but Geo Wars is already on the Wii.

I'll be getting it. It's completely a Caravan game, so it'll serve that "I need to game for 5 minutes before leaving for work" fix, junky that I am.

Star Soldier isn't a shmup in the vein of Geometry Wars or Super Stardust HD. It's a vertical shmup more akin to Raiden.
And I know Geometry Wars is already on wii, but every console's online game catalog needs a fast paced, original shmup IMO.
Defend your Castle has always been one of my favorite internet flash games, and if I had people around me who played the Wii I would totally pick it up for the four-player co-op.
I'll have to wait until I hear more about Crystal Chronicles before I decide though. It had best be awesome.

I think there's already a lot of SHMUPS you can get on Wii, there's like a billion on the VC and then this and that other SHMUP. It just isn't a gaming console without a SHMUP available I guess, even the 360 has ten billion SHMUPS, good ones too (Ikaruga and Rez ftw).
EDIT: Would Rez count as a SHMUP? I also forgot Aegis Wing

You seem to be misunderstanding. I'm saying that WIIWARE, not the wii, needs an ORIGINAL shmup in the vein of Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD. Not the wii, but WIIWARE.
And Star Soldier, despite being an EXCELLENT series, is not in the vein of geometry wars or super stardust HD. That's like saying Samurai Shodown was the same thing as Virtua Fighter - both are fighting games but they're radically different.

The Wii should be this gen's platform of choice for shmup fans, actually. I play the hell out of Soldier Blade and Lord/Gate of Thunder.

The Turbo Duo was indeed a shmup fans dream. One of the best consoles ever released, and most of the best shmups on the duo haven't even been released.

Is Star Parodier really that weird? I could see it coming here as an import sometime in the future, it doesn't seem to be Cho Aniki level weird or anything. Who decides what Turbografx games go on the VC?

According to the Danish Nintendo site, WiiWare launches the 20th and we get the Nintendo Channel on the 30th, but I can't find any info about this at all on the british Nintendo site.

Star Parodier is terrific. It's no more weird than Parodius (which is what is basically is - Parodius except for Star Soldier instead of Gladius) but I just can't see it coming over. Lots of japanese voice work.
It's by far my favorite SHMUP on the system, which says a lot because the Turbo Duo had some simply fantastic SHMUPs. Plus it's got bomberman in it. As a playable character. In a shmup. You actually pilot a flying bomberman, who shoots bombs. And one of the bosses is a gigantic mechanized black bomberman set in bomberman land.
That game is fantastic.

It's coming out in the UK though, I doubt they redid any of the voicework for them. If it's going out there then I don't see why it can't come out here. It sounds kinda like Air Zonk in that it's like a parody of SHMUPs, which is awesome.

Its coming to the UK? That's pretty surprising.
The game was originally slated to a US release under the name Fantasy... something. Space Fantasy or something like that. The conversion was complete but the Turbo Duo had already died. I wonder if that's the version that'll be released.
And it's similar to Air Zonk in a lot of ways (they're both made by Hudson/NEC, for one) and it's visuals share a lot in common. Still, I'd compare it more to Parodius, which is a good thing.
EDIT: Ah, Fantasy Star Soldier. That was what it was going to be released as.

Did they release Super Air Zonk for the VC? I like it even more than the Turbo Grafx version.
Overall, I loved the Turbo systems. They never got a chance, but damn did they see some great gaming in their lifetime. Plus, it provides a library of sega genesis/snes style gaming which, for most people, are brand new. It's like a second 16 bit era.
You know what turbo duo game should be released on the VC? DBZ: The Legend of Great Son Goku. I got that game when I picked up my Duo, and holy hell is it fun. It's not really a fighter, and I guess you have to have seen the series to take a lot away from it, but if you're a fan of the show it's fantastic.
I loved it so much that I wrote a FAQ on it, and I believe it's still the only guide to it around. REALLY great game with some fantastic cut scenes.
Yeah. Both the TG and the Neo Geo were relegated to my "rich friends". I was a bit biased against the TG as a kid because "Bonk sucked and it's just a bunch of space shooters". Oh, how wrong my little 10 year old brain was.
Super Air Zonk is on the VC. Music was ported perfectly. Dunno if I like it better than Air Zonk.
You guys make me wish I wasn't at work, but home playing the Wii.

I think this was ported to the NES, but with a different name (obviously).
I remember seeing a TurboDuo at a Software Etc in the Jackson Mall about 15 or so years ago for 300 bucks.
Yeah, DBZ: The legend of great son Goku is different from Dragonball: The Legend of Goku (Dragon Ball Z - Idainaru Son Gokou Densetsu vs Dragonball: Gokuden)
There's really no game like it. The closest game to it would be DBZ Legends, and even that is pretty pale compared to The Legend of Great Son Goku.

God, Bonk's Revenge is one of my favorite platformers of all time. I had so much fun with that game.
Neutopia is great, too. So is Ys I & II.
Man, that whole console was great. Shocking the amount of quality games on such a flash in the pan style console.
Sean Connery: You know, Nintendo... I have to inquire about the "Earthbound on the VC."
Alex Trebek: Earthbound isn't coming out for the VC.
Sean Connery: Well you're sitting on a GOLD MINE Trebek! Gussy it up any way you want... what I want to know is when it's coming to the VC. Because I've played Earthbound before, I don't mind telling you... and if Earthbound on the VC works I'll order a dozen!
Keanu Reeves: "Whoa, you guys are selling Earthbound on the VC?"
The Wii should be this gen's platform of choice for shmup fans, actually. I play the hell out of Soldier Blade and Lord/Gate of Thunder.
You think? I'll concede that thanks to the Turbo-Graphx & Neo-Geo back library, the Wii VC will have a good selection of classic shmups, but the 360 already has a great selection of newer shmups: Geometry Wars, Ikaruga HD, Heavy Weapon, Triggerheart Exelica, Omega Five, the Mutant Storms, etc. And unlike the VC games with their arcaic visuals, the 360 shmups have excellent modern high-definition graphics and online leaderboards (an essential element towards increasing the fun of shmups I've found).
Some of the best platformers of all time have been slow. See Rayman, Astal, Flashback, and Prince of Persia.
Hm...I never really thought of Flashback (or Out of this World) as a platformer, it was more of its own unique genre in my mind. Fantastic games BTW. I guess my worry with Lost Winds is that though the concept sounds like it could be fun, the actual videos I've seen look kind of boring.
Eh, none of these look interesting to me. In my mind, all they're doing is stopping another week of potential Earthbound.

Are Dual Stick shooters really falling under the category of Shmups now? I mean, just going by XBLA, it seems like there's enough of them that they're their own genre.

The 360 is a pretty solid system as well, especially now that Ketsui and DoDonPachi are headed to the platform. The Wii, however, will hopefully eventually have the entire Star Soldier library. Star Soldier R will have an online leader board as well.
We'll see what happens. I didn't mean to discount the 360, but the Wii will probably have the largest library of Shumps, counting the classics and new titles.
I reiterate, the Wii does have Geometry Wars already on it, and doesn't lack in new titles either. Castle Shikigami was recently released, and the Milestone Shooter Collection has been released in Japan (and I think it's still slated for a US release). The Milestone collection includes Karous, Radio Allergy, and Chaos Field (for what it's worth).

Rail shooters (Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon), stationary (Galaga, Space Invaders), Revolving (Defender), Arena (Sinistar), Run n Gun (Contra, Metal Slug) and "Dual Stick" (Geo Wars, Smash TV) are all under the banner of "shmup".
However, when someone says "shmup" I usually think of specifically vertical and horizontal scrolling games. Ikaruga, RType, Pulstar, Star Soldier, etc. I don't draw any lines either way, though.
