So there have been a metric fuckton of fantastic online multiplayer games released recently, and I have the feeling that this one is almost definately going to get lost in the sea of quality (a good sea to be drowning in), so I thought I might make a thread about it to drum up some interest.

What is 'The Club'?
The first rule of 'The Club' is that you don't speak about 'The Club'
The second rule of 'The Club' is that you do not contact 20th Century Fox's legal deparment.

The Offical web site has this to say -
Imagine an organisation so hidden and secretive, that only a few people around the globe know of its existence. Powerful leaders in The Club "recruit" outsiders to fight in their violent underground blood spot, like ancient gladiators. The combatants have only one option: kill or be killed.

Countless rumours persist about The Club's origins, but few facts are known. Many members like to believe that its beginnings can be traced back to the infamous Hellfire Club of 18th century London; others believe it originated during the Napoleonic Wars. Regardless, it's a shady history.

Drug lords. Dotcom billionaires. International arms dealers. Dictators. Media Tycoons. Hollywood superstars. Third World warlords. Aristocrats and royalty. They all rub shoulders in The Club, sharing a taste for blood and a belief that their wealth places them beyond the reach of normal laws. The entry fee is astronomical, and membership is for life; once you're in The Club, you can't leave.

Quite a premise, no?

Why should I care about 'The Club'?
It is Bizarre Creations' (Metropolis Street Racer, Fur Fighters, Project Gotham Racing series, Geometry Wars) first big release since Activision bought them out in September. It is also quite a new direction for them, they have been focusing on Racing Sims and small (although brilliant) 2D arcade games.

Also, if this trailer is anything to go by, it has badass art style and soundtrack.

Also, Also, it's boxart art is bringing the pretty -

How does it play?

Well the official web site has this to say
Describing the game play is tough, as it's a combination of different genres. The game itself is played in third person, but internally we're describing it as a "shooter/beat-'em-up/racer"!

When you first pick up The Club, you'll choose a character to fight as. Each character is from a vastly different background and forced to fight for different reasons (or perhaps they're not forced at all?). The structure is similar to a beat-'em-up game... imagine a Street Fighter style character select and tournament system, but with a layer of "bad ass" splashed on top.

NemoThe gameplay itself sees your character beginning each match in a new location. The Club bosses fly you around the world, from war torn cities to underground nuclear shelters and we've gone all out to include varied locations and pick some places you wouldn't expect. The theme is constant though; they're abandoned areas which have been completely taken over by The Club and populated with all sorts of sick weirdos who are just asking to be dispatched.

3, 2, 1... BAM! The level begins like a racing game. You run forwards and turn the first corner. Two masked hoodlums holding pistols (the most basic enemy in the game) swing round and take aim at you, but immediately fall in a hail of gunfire from your sub machinegun. Without breaking pace you sprint up the stairs behind them, blasting open a window (and through another enemy) as you climb.

You roll through the door at the top of the stairs, immediately taking aim at the enemy to your right. BAM, he goes down with a perfect head shot. A massive roll-bonus racks up on your screen, supplemented with the score from the headshot... Must keep this combo going! Sprinting through the next corridor and smashing through the wooden door, you're trying to shoot down the next soul before your combo ends and your bank is stashed. Must. Run. Faster!

...and that's just the first five seconds of the game.

I say check out this very positive Eurogamer preview.

How much is membership for 'The Club'?
This is the type of game that sometimes people put off from getting at launch because it is a full priced game, but has little content, and sometimes people directly equate content to value. I have taken the liberty of finding the cheapest pre-order prices in the UK.

The Club, PC
- £17.95 delivered
The Club, Xbox 360 - £32.95 delivered
The Club, PS3 - £35.95 delivered

PC games really are a lot cheaper...

What the hell does it look like man!

101324fy0.jpg

64474078vi7tx6zk3.jpg

Can I play it on my Popstation 2?
It is coming out on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. USA release date is "Feburary 2008", and European release date is TBA.

Discuss.

    I'm cautiously optimistic.

It looks great and has an amazing pedigree, but it sounds painfully repetitive...in fact, dev interviews have indicated that it's almost the entire point.

I like the concept a whole lot but it could really fall either way, imo.

The demo is fantastic according to folks who've played it. I'll have to admit I'm a little cautious, if only because it's being marketed as an arena shooter and I hate those.... well, there's Unreal but everything else is so meh.

I like that one of their characters is actually named 'Killen'. I have a feeling there'll be a horribly cheesy line in there that goes something like, 'Killen's my name, and KILLIN'S MY GAME HAHAHA!!!'.

I'm not unconvinced that wasn't in a trailer somewhere.

It makes me wish there was some sort of Elite Hobo called Stabben.

Interesting, hopefully it will be the "Gunfight Tony Hawk" game that Total Overdose almost was but fell slightly short. The idea of a shooter based around scores and combos like tony hawk really interests me.

The videos on Gametrailers from the demo looked pretty clunky and bad to me, but I've read a decent amount of positive impressions of the demo. I don't know what to think.

Well I just played the Demo on PS3, and bloody hell that was ace!

I strongly suggest anyone with access to a PS3 should try the demo. It was enough to massively increase my level of interest in this game.

It is basically a whole in depth game built around the gameplay of RE4 Mercanaries, with online multiplayer, and better controls (than RE4, not RE4:Wii Edition).

How good the final game is will depend a lot on how good all the levels are, but the level I played (some prison..) was fantastic. Very nice looking too.

It is Bizarre Creations' (Metropolis Street Racer, Fur Fighters, Project Gotham Racing series, Geometry Wars) first big release since Activision bought them out in September.

Maybe I missed something but if they're owned by Activision, why is SEGA doing anything with this game?

Looks interesting. Will wait and see how it plays out.

Because the game was announced at E3 06, and Sega were already on board to publish it. Any new Bizarre games from here on out will be Activision.

This game sounds fun from the article I read ages ago in I think Game Informer.
The mulitplayer is what sounds good to me, creating a character and going crazy online. Time will tell.

This ... hmm. I hadn't even heard of this game, but I finally clicked on the thread out of boredom and saw this comparison and the Web site description. Double hmm. I need a demo to make sure, but Mercs mode in RE4 was grand and I have a soft spot for games that blend strange elements of wildly different genres.

I think if you are interested, then you should definately check out the demo when it is available to you. I am not 100% sure how big the final game will be, but the demo easilly kept me entertained for over half an hour, and I didn't even touch online (the demo only includes split screen MP, not online, but from what I can tell the final game will have fairly robust online)

Edit: Did I mention that the animation and camera movements are slick as hell.

Does the concept seem like it will hold up for a full priced game very well? It sounds more like a PSN/XBLA concept than it does a full fledged title.

See, like the Eurogame preview said. It's a little like Street Fighter.

If the characters are all well made, play differently, and balanced, and the levels are all good, then I see no reason why it wouldn't be worth the price they are asking. It's hard to judge based on the one playable character and one level in the demo. Maybe play the demo when it's made available to you, and then check out some reviews when they come out.

Been watching some of the videos and not fully impressed by this. It doesn't seem all that challenging and the AI is along the same lines as Stranglehold.

To make it worse, the gun sounds sound something stolen from Hasbro toys.

I played this game at E3 and couldn't really see myself playing it very long. Only 8 levels and each 'event' is just a variation on that level. Me, with my massive hatred of playing FPS games on a Gamepad beat the presenters score first try. Really seems like something that'd be better off as a Live! Arcade game or priced in the $30-$40 range.
