Alright, so for Christmas, my fiancee's mom got her a wii. She doesnt know much about games, so she got her Super Mario Galaxy. I guess she also heard that Twilight Princess was a good game. So, as a New Years suprise, she went ahead and opened TP and stuck it in the Wii, so it would be a suprise when my fiancee turned it on.
Im not really sure what her mom was thinking, because TP just really isnt my fiancee's kind of game. She would like to return it to gamestop, for cash, but Im not sure if that is possible. First of all, as of now, her mom cant find the receipt. Secondly, the game has been opened. What are the odds that she would be able to get cash back? Granted, this is the girl who was able to return an opened computer game that she bought that didnt work on her computer and got cash back no problem, but I just wanted to get some advice on this before we drive down to gamestop. Thanks.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's like 95% unlikely that you're going to get cash back for a gift. If her mom can't find the receipt, then they can look it up if she paid with plastic, maybe check, but if it's cash, then honestly, they probably won't find it. The employees aren't going to spend two hours digging through the register log to lose money.
Even with the reciept, it's still a low chance. I'd be really nice and bring in the receipt, explain what happened, and politely request full store credit.
....Wait, so. She would like Mario Galaxy...but not Zelda? This seems strange to me, is she sure that she would not like this?
Anyhow, if she is good looking and there is a goofy dude working behind the counter, as there usually is (Or an awkwardly unattractive girl but that is neither here nor there.) she could probably pull the "Well, my mom thought it would be a good gift to put in there and surprise" blah blah blah blah.
But it is a large, corporate retailer. So there are sometimes when even looks can not help you.
You can get guaranteed cash back, but only as a trade-in. And even then, they fuck you hard by taking a disgustin percentage off. But if you're looking for cash, you can probably get $20 back.

I like Galaxy but couldn't get into Zelda - it's not unheard of...
With that said I really can't think of a great solution to this issue. You won't get cash back on this. You MAY be able to get full store credit at Walmart given they are pretty lenient on returns this time of year, but Gamestop is likely to shut you down entirely and offer a tradein value instead.
She isnt HUGE into videogames, she likes Galaxy because its something she can play, enjoy, but not have to spend a lot of time on, like Zelda. I want to try and get the receipt first, but if it doesnt show up in the next couple days, she might just go ahead and try.
Who knows, it may help that she is just gorgeous. I just talked to her about the last time she returned it. She wanted Viva Pinata to play on her laptop, but she doesnt know much about computers and didnt realize it was just way out of her system's range. I told her they wouldnt let her return an opened pc game, but she went anyways. Had her receipt, walked to the stage, explained she just didnt realize it wouldnt work, and asked if there was anyway she could just get store credit. The guy behind the counter said "well, we could just give you cash", and that was that.
