Metal Slug 3 today, Omega Five next week. Ah, it's great to be a shmup fan with a 360.
Omega Five is a sidescrolling shmup by Hudson & Natsume. It features multiple characters (2 initial, 2 unlockable) each with their own unique playing styles, big beautiful HD visuals, local co-op (no online co-op sadly), and multiple game modes. Here's an interview with one of the guys at Hudson about the game: http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news.php?id=541
I really like the part where he talks about how making the game really difficult was one of the major goals of the team but that's probably just my inner masochist talking.
I'm getting Metal Slug at the weekend, and this the following weekend. Looks wicked, shame about no Live co-op though.
I Live Arcade.
PEW PEW PEW
My PEWPEWPEW quota has already long been filled and yet I'm clearing the landing pad for this bad boy. I wonder if I should pick up Mutant Storm Empire first, especially because it does have Live co-op, but this just looks too fun.
In other shmup XBLA news, when is Ikaruga supposed to drop? Rez HD should be coming this month too, right?
I remember reading last month that these were the next XBLA games:
* Rez HD
* GripShift
* N+
* Arkadian Warriors
* Brain Challenge
* Omega Five
* Poker Smash
* Sensible World of Soccer
With Omega Five next week, that's half the list so it looks like we'll get Rez by the end of this month, February at the latest.
As for Ikaruga, I haven't heard anything specific about a release date so who knows? I did sell my Gamecube version a couple weeks ago for $30 so I'm ready to pick up the enhanced 360 version whenever it shows up.
I like to have as much control as possible in my 2D shmups, therefor the Geometry Wars setup is my ideal. Anything else just makes me feel kind of crippled. I still like games that only allow me to shoot in one direction, but I much prefer complete control.
I don't get the Robotron style shooter control hate. It's just a control scheme and all of the games that use it on XBLA (Heavy Weapon, Geometry Wars, the two Mutant Storms) are all pretty different in feel and gameplay.

I'm going to sell off my GC version too, which is part of the reason why I was asking. I also may sell off my PS2 copy of Rez in anticipation for full HD and surround sound glory.
This looks really, really nice. I don't really care what control scheme it ends up with, although there ain't nothing wrong with twin-stick action.
Here's the official press release (taken from teamxbox.com):
"Hudson Entertainment Dates Omega Five For Xbox Live Arcade
Sci-Fi Side-Scrolling Shooter Coming January 9 for 800 Microsoft Points
REDWOOD SHORES, CA - January 3, 2008 - Hudson Entertainment, the North American publishing arm of Hudson Soft, today announced that Omega Five for Xbox LIVE Arcade will be available to consumers on January 9, 2008 for 800 Microsoft Points. Published by Hudson and developed by Natsume, the game is an entirely new original IP featuring a side-scrolling shooter set in a gorgeous 3D environment.
Taking place in a far-flung future, Omega Five delivers hardcore action never seen before on the platform, while providing visually stunning graphics that pushes the limits for a digital download game. The game is set in multiple 3D environments and features incredible special effects and enormous battles, all in high definition. Omega Five is distinct in that players can choose from multiple humanoid characters, each with their own unique special attacks and upgradeable weapons, which they can shoot in 360 degrees. Omega Five also includes a local co-op function so a friend can join in on the aerial mayhem.
Hudson also released details on the final playable character. R.A.D. is another of Omega Five's unlockable warriors and is very similar to Ruby. Her skintight suit allows her to move much more quickly than Ruby, letting her weave through waves of enemy fire, though it also slows down her aiming.
. Weapon Type A: Vulcan Laser Cannon - R.A.D.'s initial weapon blasts enemies with rapid-fire laser beams. As the weapon is upgraded, the rate of fire increases, allowing her to unleash a non-stop barrage of laser fire.
. Weapon Type B: Reflecting Laser Beam - R.A.D.'s second weapon is a continuous laser beam that allows her to cut a swath of destruction through lesser enemies. Upgrades increase the power of the beam, splitting it in two, which also reflect off of certain surfaces. This lets R.A.D. attack enemies from around corners.
. Weapon Type C: Lightning Gun - Her final main weapon is a high-intensity lightning gun that roasts enemies. Upgrades increase the power, letting R.A.D. slice through enemies at will, as well as adding secondary lightning bolts that shoot out from the main beam at nearby enemies, doing incremental damage.
. Alternate Attack - R.A.D. has one alternate attack, which sends out satellite that can instantly destroy lesser enemies or anchor onto stronger enemies. After the satellite latches onto an enemy, it deals continuous damage, and R.A.D. is still able to fire in any direction. Additionally, while the satellite is floating around R.A.D., it can block enemy fire.
. Dimension Field - All characters can quickly teleport to another dimension for a brief time, allowing them to avoid enemy attacks, though at the expense of a small amount of life.
. Ultimate Burst - All characters can unleash an enormously destructive nuke-like attack, after having collected at least 100 p-chips (the pink triangles that appear after defeating enemies) to fill one p-jail (the golden triangles at the bottom left of the screen)."
The Dimension Field dodge move intrigues me. I'm also pleased to see it's confirmed at 800 MS points (I didn't expect anything else, but it's nice to know). And it sounds like it is a twin stick controlled game.

And your !?%# huge screenshot...
I'm really curious to see how it plays. I don't think I've ever played a space shmup with such big main characters.

I'm seriously getting fucking sick of that control scheme.
So am I.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
Was watching a preview for it online, and the previewer said there was no online multiplayer on his build, really hope that was an unfinished build.
EDIT: I should have read the well made opening by rainbowdespair a little better, i see its confirmed with no online =S.
