What the Fuck New Jersey

A judge in New Jersey is denying a couple the right to adopt a second child because the father is an atheist.
Despite the Burkes' "high moral and ethical standards," he said, the New Jersey state constitution declares that "no person shall be deprived of the inestimable privilege of worshiping Almighty God in a manner agreeable to the dictates of his own conscience." Despite Eleanor Katherine's tender years, he continued, "the child should have the freedom to worship as she sees fit, and not be influenced by prospective parents who do not believe in a Supreme Being."

What the fuck?

Where do the adoption centers even find out this stuff? Are you required to put your religion down on the forms?

This is seriously fucked. The child should be allowed to worship how he/she sees fit and not be affected by parents who do not believe in a higher being? Thats in their constitution? That sentence alone is so retarded.

    No
    but

How can not believing make you ineligible if believing doesn't also disqualify you

People with specific faiths will naturally tend to attempt to raise their child according to their own religious beliefs

Meaning that no child's freedom of religion can be guaranteed by anyone

    So I mean...

    New Jersey? Wtf?

While obviously stupid, this is pretty detrimental to religious causes, as it says that people can only find Jesus if their parents are Christians as well.

Instead, Superior Court Judge William Camarata raised the religious issue.
He probably deals with more than family issues, but yes.

Then you're not a christian and therefore therefore not eligible under their thinly-veiled christian laws.

I checked around, can't find any other news stories on this. Is this really that old, or has no one else picked it up?

    Third option: My googling sucks.

So yeah. That was an article from 1970.

The kid is in his/her mid to late 30's now, most likely, and was, in fact, raised by John and Cynthia Burke. It was reversed on appeal the next year.

    Damn misleading interwebs.

Very old, this case has been solved, I actually searched the 70's instead of the 2000's. Silly google.
