PS2 & Singstar: Is it worth a Rebuy?

Odd question:

I sold my PS2 last year and put it towards my initial game library for my Wii. Got a great tradein deal at a local store and have been quite happy with the decision.

Last week, a family friend was telling my wife how much they love Singstar and it's got her on a kick that maybe we should rebuy a PS2 for the title.

Since Rockband seems to be avoiding the Wii, it would also allow me to experience that game without buying a "new" console.

So - first of all, is Singstar actually a good game? We bought the Wii for group/family fun, it seems like it would fit that mold, but I've never actually seen or tried it. Second, is Rockband still a good game without the downloadable goodness on the other consoles?

Rock Band is a good game without the DLC, buuuuuut..... you'll eventually grow very tired of hearing 'Maps' and 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'. That said the vocal stuff is pretty freakin' awesome.

IMO you should wait for something that will allow DLC, as it really makes a huge difference in the long run. (i.e. buy a PS3/360 and RB, or buy the next SingStar, or whatever)

(Oh yeah and RB has all the other goodies that add up quite a bit of awesome)

I played (and heard of) sing star for the first time a few days ago, and honestly I wasn't impressed. It seemed exactly the same as Karaoke revolution.

It just so happens my family has been utterly obsessed with SingStar lately.

It's a fun game to be sure, especially at parties when everyone gets involved. However, be warned that it's entirely possible that whoever's playing it might find 1 or 2 songs they like and they play them endlessly. Basically, it's fun but gets old really fast.

I have large amounts of fun with Singstar on a regular basis. The game gets +++ points for being able to swap disks at any time with out rebooting the game or system. Great for when your partying and playing with tons of people (and being drunk).

People who sing the same song over and over immediatly get ejected from my house ASAP.

Whats the state of next gen karaoke anyways?? To be honest its one of the only things holding me back from the new systems. I play more karaoke games than I do anything else.

One of the videos for Playstation Home mentioned singstar.

The new Singstar for PS3 is out in Europe (and possibly Australia).

Its supposed to have Sing Store where you can buy many songs you can buy and download. You can also upload your performances (with video if you have the eye). Kinda like a myspace thing.
It was supposed to come out in the US in December but I heard some kind of licensing snafu tied it up. I'm also hoping they are waiting for the Bluetooth Mics to be available before releasing.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Far as I can tell, the main appeal of Singstar over Karaoke Revolution is the fact that the songs aren't covers and they have music videos.

And KR is probably dead in the water, since Harmonix moved on.

Konami might keep making it without them, but that won't mean much.

Hmmm....sounds like we may have to go for it. Within the next two ears we'll have a house and want to fill a game room for Luke and it would be perfect to have the PS2 for Singstar, DDR, Rockband and such.

Don't forget there's a Singstar bundle white PS2 out there, if you can find it. You'll save a few bucks in the process too.

If you like the idea of karaoke, then Singstar is great.

The best part is that the individual Singstar discs are often sold off cheap, so you can get a pretty large collection of songs for a bargain price if you find some decent sales. At the moment, there are several places here in Australia discounting their excess Christmas Singstar stock.

Singstar mostly features pop songs, but that's generally what you would want for a karaoke party game.

That's what we're looking at actually unless I find some insane Craigslist deal. Plus (and I realize I'll sound like a bit of a douche on this) the white will match my Wii and DS!

quite frankly, singstar or not, the ps2 has the most prolific and quality library since the snes, and everyone should have one.

The thing with singstar is that it uses the song's music videos for levels, or backgrounds, which is kinda cool. While other games, like karaoke revolution/american idol you have to stare at some type of avatar singing, which gets pretty boring very quickly.

With GH3 and rockband though, the boring avatar problem has been taken care of.

Singstar ps3 should coming soon, and they promised the singstore to have "hundreds" of downloadable songs/musicvideos and other things.

Cool, that's definitely the way to go if you're looking at getting a PS2 and Singstar right now.

I also think the white PS2 looks pretty neat, so no worries there.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to think of Singstar with DLC.

I picked up my Singstar discs for around AU$30 each, which works out to be around a dollar per song. I can't imagine the DLC being that cheap.

Also, it's pretty common for people to bring along their Singstar discs to a party (if the host doesn't have those versions). You can't really do that with DLC.

Where the hell did this series come from? Honestly, I'd never ever heard of it until it was offhandedly mentioned at Sony's E3 2007. I didn't think much of it, but now I wikipedia'd it, and there's 13 (12 for the PS2 and 1 for PS3) of the things out!? Is this like... really popular outside the US or something?

It's really popular in Europe as a party game. I own nearly all the PS2 singstars due to my parents buying them for parties. It's a laugh to play when everyone's drunk.

I recently bought the PS3 singstar and it's pretty much the exact same as the previous Singstars except now you can buy songs online. There isn't very much up on the marketplace worth buying right now but the prices arn't too bad(£0.99 per song I think it was).

SingStar is pretty popular over here in Australia and yeah, it kind of came out of nowhere for me too.. well, like a year ago it did but a few days ago we had a ton of people chilling in this room with pool tables, lounges and a large TV and a friend set up SingStar (He had soo many versions too, it was crazy) on the TV and man, like everyone joined in.

The 2 people singing would go at it but than you'd have like 20 others joining in singing and some of the people who had a go at it, like, actually playing were pretty crazy/funny. One guy hopped up on top of the TV thing and was kind of lying in a funny pose and knocked out one of the tubes from one of the fluoro lights with this foot. o_0

Good times. I also got to show off my Guitar Hero skills.

We have it but only 2 versions of it but I never play in, in fact, I don't think I ever have. :s
