INCOMING ENEMY NEW SEASON POST

Spoiler for vertical doom

Spring 2008 Animes!

Not including OVAs or anything that is aimed for those between the ages of 6 and 10. I also ignored some of the things that are returning for their 3rd season, (Gag Manga, Kirarin, etc) or 8 billionth season (Kyou Kara Maou and YuGiOh) If you're not hooked on YuGiOh by now, there's a good chance that you just don't have the heart of the cards in you.

Have some promos:
Allison and Lillia, Angelique, BLASSREITER, Crystal Blaze, many Geass, Kaiba, Kanokon, Kure-nai, a couple Macross, Maid Guy, Monochrome Factor, Nabari no Ou, Nikki, Chico, Real Drive, To-Love-Ru, two Druaga, and two Wagaya are within.

Whew.

romantica.jpg
Junjou Romantica
http://www.suzukisan.info/
Studio: DEEN
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 2nd

Summary:
Misaki's college tutoring has ended up with him being romanced by an older guy... and more men keep appearing in his life... until one day he finds a boy's love book written by one of them with him as the star. His life keeps spiralling out of control from there.

Personal Thoughts:
Yaoi. Hot. I try not to prejudge TOO much, but come on... it's yaoi. What do you want from me? I bet it'll be only 30% as manlovetastic as this season of Geass though. What a way to kick off the new season. I think it's a sign.

==================================

allison.jpg
Allison and Lillia
http://allison-web.net/
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Adventure
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
In a world where two countries are at war, air forces have just recently begun to be deployed. The show will follow two girls and their adventures therein. Note that the Lilia novels are set 15 years or so after the Allison novels, so there'll be a timeskip at the halfway point for a new story.

Personal Thoughts:
The novels are written by the same person who wrote Kino's Travels, so if you were a fan of that series, this one should definitely be worth checking out. Even without that, I could get into a fighter pilot show without the random Gonzoness that pervaded Last Exile. Should be fun.

==================================

kurenai.jpg

Kure-nai
http://www.samidareso.com/
Studio: Brains Base
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Adventure
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
Shintaro Kurenai is a mediator in personal conflicts... until he's approached by a rich family and recruited into becoming the bodyguard for their young daughter.

Personal Thoughts:
The background music in the promo video makes me think of Cheers for some reason. I don't know, it looks alright... I guess. I'm just not entirely certain what it's trying to be at all.

==================================

macross.jpg

Macross FRONTIER
http://www.macrossf.com/
Studio: Satelight
Genre: Mecha, Action, Drama
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
Pop idols teamed with mecha pilots in the 25th anniversary version of Macross.

Personal Thoughts:
The first episode already aired so you should already have a good idea whether you want to follow it or not. No use in me telling you anything. Go check it out for yourself.

==================================

loveru.jpg

To Love-Ru
http://www.j-toloveru.com/
Studio: Xebec
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
Rito Yuuki can't confess to his dream girl... and then one day, and alien girl appears in his bath and decides that she wants to marry him instead of returning to her home planet and marry one of her suitors. Unless Rito can protect her from them, the Earth may be destroyed.

Personal Thoughts:
Ha ha ha, see... the title is a pun on "Trouble" as you would pronounce it in Japanese. God... shoot me now. The last Jump romance comedy that I can remember is Ichigo 100%... which I consider an abomination unto man and beast. I see little reason why this will be particularly different. Besides, Thursdays are packed. Go away, crappy Jump show.

==================================

holic.jpg

xxxHOLiC Kei
http://www.tbs.co.jp/holic/
Studio: Production IG
Genre: Fantasy, Drama
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
The second season of CLAMP's sister story to Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Watanuki's continuing adventures exploring demons and spirits.

Personal Thoughts:
The first season was... not good. But at this point in the manga, the stories start getting better so I'm hopeful that they won't muss up the Spider Queen arc at least. Watanuki's adventures and eye eating mishaps should be fun though.

==================================

amatsuki.jpg

Amatsuki
http://amatsuki.com/web/index.html
Studio: Studio DEEN
Genre: Adventure
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 4th

Summary:
Rikugou Tokidoki tried out a VR system to visit the Edo period and when he was attacked, he found that he had lost an eye and could no longer leave the simulation... or perhaps it's reality after all.

Personal Thoughts:
Well, who knows. I could name about twenty other shows with the same general premise. I like fantasy and action though, so *shrug.*

==================================

itazura.jpg

Itazura na Kiss
http://itakiss-anime.jp/
Studio: TMS Entertainment
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 4th

Summary:
Kotoko and her father are forced to move in with the guy she loves... but he's already rejected her once. Now's her chance to convince him otherwise and seduce him for real.

Personal Thoughts:
I have to admit that the production values for this on the website look... uninspired to say the least... and the premise is one seen in a thousand other romance shows. At least in this case, we're not pretending that the two are half-siblings or something.

==================================

druaga.jpg

The Tower of Druaga ~The Aegis of URUK~
http://www.druaga-anime.com/
Studio: Gonzo
Genre: Fantasy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 4th

Summary:
Whenever the Tower of Uruk reappears, King Gilgamesh sends raiding parties to destroy the monsters. This time, they're going to try to defeat the head demon, Druaga.

Personal Thoughts:
Gonzo plus a mediocre 80s RPG. DOES THAT SAY WINNING COMBINATION OR WHAT!?

==================================

blass.jpg

BLASSREITER
http://www.nitroplus.co.jp/pc/lineup/an_01/
Studio: Gonzo
Genre: Science Fiction
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
In the far future, the dead begin to rise. The only ones who can combat them are humans who can somehow temporarily transform themselves into demonic forms, but that ability also makes them feared and hunted by the rest of humanity.

Personal Thoughts:
Ha ha ha ha ha Gonzo... sci fi... nothing about this appeals to me. I'll give it an episode, but pfft. I don't expect it to turn out any different from Gonzo's last 20 action shows.

==================================

dc2ss.jpg

Da Capo II Second Season
http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/dc2/
Studio: Feel
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
The continuing adventures of Yoshiyuki and his harem from Da Capo II.

Personal Thoughts:
I hated Da Capo, I didn't watch Da Capo II past episode 2, and I would rather have my pants filled with angry weasels than follow this.

==================================

kanokon.jpg

Kanokon
http://www.kanokon.com/
Studio: Xebec
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
Oyamada Kouta transfers into the big city and meets the prettiest girl in school. She takes an interest in him, but she has a secret... a fox tail.

Personal Thoughts:
What's up, fanservice barrage? Maybe it won't be as bad as the promotional material and manga, but... you know... there better be something more to it than endless cleavage and panties.

==================================

maidguy.jpg

Mask of the Maid Guy
http://www.maidguy.com/
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
Naeka has a secret... she's one of two heirs to a vast fortune. Keeping her safe are two maid bodyguards, one young and beautiful, one a giant burly masked man.

Personal Thoughts:
Hee hee. Men in masks and maid dresses amuse me. I'm predictible like that.

==================================

zettai.gif

Absolutely Lovely Children
http://www.z-child.com/
Studio: Synergy SP
Genre: Fantasy, Action, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 6th

Summary:
Kouichi Minamoto is part of BABEL and in charge of babysitting and training three ten year old girls with immense psychic powers into a military special ops unit.

Personal Thoughts:
So... basically Japan's take on the Power Puff girls. Again. Well, it looks a bit better than the Power Puff girls so I'm not going to dismiss it out of hand, but at the same time, those are some short girls for what are supposed to be ten year olds. This has the potential to go really creepy really fast.

==================================

geass.jpg

Code GEASS R2
http://www.geass.jp/
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Mecha, Nonsense
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 6th

Summary:
The continuing adventures of 'super genius' Lelouche to win his third victory of the entire series. If only a cat doesn't show up to thwart him.

Personal Thoughts:
Geass sucks.

==================================

nabari.jpg

The King of Nabari
http://www.nabari.tv/
Studio: JCStaff
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 6th

Summary:
Rokujou Miharu holds an immense power within him and a ninja clan is determined to reclaim it. Protecting him are his teacher and classmates, but Miharu must face his destiny to truly be free.

Personal Thoughts:
What really amuses me about this JCStaff action show is that it has the now usual VA pair of Kugimiya Rie (Shana/Louise) and Satoshi Hino (Yuji/Saito), only Rie is voicing a guy and Hino is one of his ninja bodyguards. This has all sorts of unintentionally hilarious potential. It's JCStaff, it's ninjas, it's action. I am so in. It is being directed by one of Gonzo's old directors though... but hopefully that won't affect it too much. The trailer seemed decent enough at any rate, especially from JCStaff whose idea of a thorough trailer is to throw a couple shots of sketch art in front of a camera and call it a day. I still have no idea why it's apparently studio policy for them to not do promo vids.

==================================

neoang.jpg

Neo Angelique Abyss
http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/neoangelique/
Studio: Yumeta
Genre: Romance
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 6th

Summary:
Another series based on the Angelique games. Magical girls, romance, girlish bonding etc.

Personal Thoughts:
I don't know anything about the Angelique series really aside from that it's based on a low series of dating games for girls. The fact that I don't know anything about it and it's had multiple shows means that it's not particularly noteworthy and that I will probably remain ignorant of it.

==================================

monochrome.jpg

Monochrome Factor
http://www.monochro.tv/
Studio: ACGT
Genre: Action Fantasy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 7th

Summary:
Akira Nikaido has a normal life... until the shadow world gets thrown out of alignment and he has to join the fight to restore the balance between the two worlds.

Personal Thoughts:
Another of the "generic premise, we'll see how it pans out." I feel bad saying that, but, I mean... come on... shadow world vs light? Could it be more formulaic?

==================================

souleater.jpg

Soul Eater
http://www.souleater.tv/
Studio: Bones
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 7th

Summary:
The death gods are competing to make the ultimate weapon, a Death Scythe... but to do so, they need to collect the souls of evil men... and at least one witch.

Personal Thoughts:
Well, Bones does make pretty decent action shows. This one is in it for the long haul (full year series), so it may progress a little slowly, but we'll see if they fall on the awesome action side of the fence, or the irritating and excessive Jump exposition side. This one is also going to be a bit weird because it has two airings; one at prime time, and then another a few days later with added content later at night. I'm sure those of you following fansubs won't even see the former, but it might be weird if you like to keep up to date within a day or two of shows airing.

==================================

sa.jpg

Special A
http://special-a.jp/
Studio: AIC/Gonzo
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 7th

Summary:
Hikari is determined to beat Kei, sports, grades... anything. Unfortunately, she's also too dense to realize that Kei is in love with her.

Personal Thoughts:
I've heard a lot of good things about the manga actually, starting with Hinano's writeup, so hopefully this will at least be able to triumph over the fact that Gonzo's involved. Maybe they're just doing the inking and aren't being let anywhere near the writing. I could get behind that. There better not be one damn CG stairway though.

==================================

vampire.jpg

Vampire Knight
http://www.vampire-knight.jp/
Studio: Studio Deen
Genre: Action
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 7th

Summary:
Yuki was attacked by one vampire and then rescued by another. Ten years later, she leads a group of them at her school... but the nature of a vampire is hard to change.

Personal Thoughts:
Another pretty generic premise. It kind of makes me think of the girlish version of Hellsing with Integra as the main hero. Horie Yui's got the heroine, so I'm sure I'll hang around for at least a few episodes unless the first one is truly godawful. If they make her as much of a badass as they did Byakko in Labyrinth, I'm perfectly fine with that.

==================================

wagaya.jpg

Wagaya no Oinara-sama
http://www.mediaworks.co.jp/contents/oinarisama/index.php
Studio: ZEXCS
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 7th

Summary:
A fox demon served as a guardian for hundreds of years until it was sealed up because of its harmful pranks. Eventually, it was unsealed and became the guardian of a new family, but it's forgotten which gender it was and is now fiercely loyal to its new master.

Personal Thoughts:
The promo actually made this one look kind of decent... kind of like a more magical Ranma 1/2 without the slapstick, complete with that kind of uncomfortable sexual dimorphism that Japan seems to love. Well... not -that- much like Ranma outside of the sex changing protagonist, but whatever.

==================================

himitsu.jpg

Himitsu ~Top Secret~ The Revelation
http://www.ntv.co.jp/secret/
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Science Fiction, Thriller
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 8th

Summary:
In the future, science has developed to the point where the last five years of a person's memories are downloadable, even after death. Of course... criminals and police has evolved as well.

Personal Thoughts:
I swear this was an episode of Star Trek. I'm not a big fan of overly serious shows anyway, especially ones that will probably rely on people conveniently forgetting things due to The Gov'ment Manipulatin' Der Memories. Damn the Man!

==================================

realdrive.jpg

Real Drive
http://www.ntv.co.jp/RD/
Studio: Production IG
Genre: Science Fiction, Thriller
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 8th

Summary:
In the distant future, people began to explore their psyches on a network that connected them all at the fundamental level of their mind. However, there are incidents and aberrations between reality and the electronic world. Masamichi Haru is a cybernetic diver that investigates them.

Personal Thoughts:
Silly Production IG. Stop trying to recapture Ghost in the Shell without actually just making more Ghost in the Shell.

==================================

crystal.jpg

Crystal Blaze (Glass Maiden)
http://anime.biglobe.ne.jp/crystal-blaze/
Studio: Action, Thriller
Genre: Mystery
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 9th

Summary:
In the run down city of Lags Town, Shu runs a detective agency with three assistants. One day, a woman without memory walks into his office that forces him to confront his own past as well as an incident that will rock the entire city.

Personal Thoughts:
Oh good. Amnesia. I love amnesia. Like a love a swift kick to the head. It might be better than it sounds. On the other hand, the fact that the detective agency is staffed by Shu and what appears to be a bunch of nubile high school girls doesn't engender hope. Also, "Lags Town" makes me laugh. I blame Lags Town when I lose online games, personally.

==================================

kaiba.jpg

Kaiba
http://www.wowow.co.jp/anime/kaiba/
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Science Fiction, Romance
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 10th

Summary:
In the distant future, memory is now stored in computers and upon 'death,' the memories are transferred into a new body. A boy wakes up one day with no memories at all and no clues about himself except a pendant of a girl. He's soon attacked and forced to seek out his past and the mysterious girl.

Personal Thoughts:
Oh hey, more amnesia. I hate amnesia. Maybe they'll do something interesting with it though. It's certainly got a nice unique visual style going. I've learned to not expect deep thoughts out of anime though, and I doubt this'll be an exception.

==================================

library.jpg

Library War
http://www.toshokan-sensou.com/
Studio: Production IG
Genre: Mecha, Action, Drama
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 10th

Summary:
In the future, information of all types has become one of the most valuable commodities in the world. Because of this, people try to control it in all its forms. To combat those who would use it wrongfully or restrict it, a special force is formed to protect the 'libraries' of the world.

Personal Thoughts:
So... like... combat squad RoD without the paper magic? I'm not sure I can get behind people being all serious about defending libraries. They're freakin' libraries for crying out loud. I honestly can't really glean enough from the website to have a particularly strong opinion one way or the next.

==================================

golgo13.jpg

Golgo 13
http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/golgo/
Studio: The Answer Studio
Genre: Action, Drama
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 11th

Summary:
Duke Togo is a secret agent dedicated to bringing the enemy to justice and willing to use whatever means possible in order to accomplish his mission. His code name: Golgo 13.

Personal Thoughts:
Golgo 13's a manly man and all, but I'm more of a Lupin fan personally. Depends on which way they take this. Lots of boom would be fun... lots of gritty men smoking cigarettes and talking about how badass they are... less so. We'll see what kind of budget this one has.

==================================

chico.jpg

Chico, Heiress of the Phantom Thief (The Girl of 20 Faces)
http://www.chico-tv.com/
Studio: Bones, Telecom
Genre: Mystery
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 12th

Summary:
After being saved as a child, Chico has become the successor to the infamous thief, the Man of Twenty Faces. The title has now passed on to her and she must fulfill her new role.

Personal Thoughts:
Of the crop of the mystery shows, this one looks the best. Bones is involved too, so it'll probably be at least pretty decently animated. Otherwise, *shrug* There are a lot of ways they can go with it and it's one of those things that I want to see in action first.

==================================

nikki.jpg

Diary of a Crazy Family (Kyouran Kazoku Nikki)
http://www.kyouran.jp/
Studio: Nomad
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 12th

Summary:
A thousand years ago, an alien tried to destroy the world. Before it was killed, it swore that its descendants would finish the job 1,000 years later. Those 1,000 years are up and suspected descendants of the monster have been brought together... but they're not quite as monstrous as you'd think.

Personal Thoughts:
This show sounds weird. Really weird. Really really weird. I do like magical girl spoofs (see: Dokuro, Komugi, Punie, etc) so it should be fun. Although... I think that girl in the cat ears is supposedly 20. I'm not sure how that works out.

==================================

penguin.jpg

Penguin Girl ? Heart
http://pen-musu.jp/
Studio: ???
Genre: Comedy
Information Links: ANN Entry
Premiers April 19th

Summary:
The life and times of a rich 14 year old otaku girl with large breasts. THRILLING.

Personal Thoughts:
Talk about a redundant title. Yet another fanservicey affair for the season. Spring seems fraught with them.

==================================
BLERG OVER 30 SHOWS IS TOO MANY.

    H2O looks worse and worse every time I see anything about it. First the trailer that was just voice actress introductions. Then the actual trailer which made me yearn for good old Engrish. Now, I just read over the synopsis, and somehow up to this point I've missed that the lead is blind.

    A blind main character pretty much ensures I've lost interest unless he's a race car driver. Or maybe a competitive spear fisherman.

    Don't see much in that lineup that interests me.

    I'm right with you on Pretty Cure. Awesome first episode. Little girls kickin monster ass with kung-fu? Hell yes! Major letdown that they totally dropped the only interesting thing about it after one episode.

    I just realized that Kekkaishi is airing new episodes again. Need to get caught up!

    AYAKASHI
    http://www.ayakashi.info/
    Studio: Tokyo Kids
    Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers December 12th

    Summary:
    Some people have an Ayakashi... parasitic spirits that grant them amazing power. Yuu is a boy with mysterious powers who soon comes in contact with other Ayakashi users and is forced into their conflict.

    Personal Thoughts:
    The first two episodes aired awhile ago. They were... not good. That's all I have to say about that.

    Sisters of Wellber II
    http://www.avexmovie.jp/lineup/wellber/
    Studio: Production IG
    Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 1st

    Summary:
    After attacking her betrothed on her wedding night, Princess Rita fled in the company of the thief Tina to stay out of the hands of those pursuing her as well as understanding the intrigue surrounding the kingdoms. Sequel of the 2007 series of the same name.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Almost certainly not interested. The talking tank, naked fairy, and wackiness of the world mixed with an attempt at a serious plot just turned me off to things after a few episodes. I can't imagine picking it up again in the middle of the story.

    h20.jpg

    H20 ~Footprints in the Sand~
    http://anime.webnt.jp/h2o/
    Studio: ZEXCS
    Genre: Drama, Romance
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 2nd

    Summary:
    After the death of his mother and becoming estranged from his father, a blind boy moves to a new school to start his life over. He tries to befriend everybody, but the economic status of everybody makes a sharp divide in them all as he learns about his new classmates and new town.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Everything I've heard or read about this one has been "great art, horrible story," with a further complaint that most of the game is flashbacks, with the occasional flashback within a flashback. None of this excites me. The fact that the official site has a picture of him tapping a girl's ass with his cane also does not excite me.

    rosario.jpg

    Rosario + Vampire
    http://www.rosa-vam.com/
    Studio: Gonzo
    Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 3rd

    Summary:
    Aono somehow ends up in a monster academy. He meets a beautiful girl there, but when the rosary on her chest is removed, she becomes a powerful vampire and feeds off him, turning him into a monster as well.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Gonzo... Gonzo... Gonzo... my old arch-nemesis. The fact that the promo is almost 50% CG chairs and desks is not a good sign. I'm also told that the manga doesn't... progress well or gracefully either. With Gonzo at the helm though, there's no telling how bad it could turn out.

    Hatenkou Yuugi (Dazzle)
    http://hatenkouyugi.com/
    Studio: Studio DEEN
    Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Adventure
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 4th

    Summary:
    A young girl is thrown out of her house and told to see the world. She joins with a young man trying to find revenge for her father's murder. Together, the two travel the world, learning about the small magic everywhere and their own places in life.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Eh, perhaps. I'm not sold on the concept, but it's generic enough that it could mean just about anything. It'll probably end up being just a little too slow and plodding for my tastes.

    shigofumi.jpg

    Shigofumi ~Stories of the Last Letter
    http://www.shigofumi.com/
    Studio: JCStaff
    Genre: Fantasy
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 4th

    Summary:
    After death, people are given the opportunity to write one last letter to someone they left behind. These are the stories of those letters and the girl who delivers them.

    Personal Thoughts:
    I love JCStaff and all, but this just sounds depressing. It's probably meant to be uplifting and hopeful about people living on after the death of a loved one or some such rot, but Shinigami no Ballad tried that and I was underimpressed there too. Episodic tales of death just aren't my bag.

    http://kimiaru.jp/
    Studio: A.C.G.T.
    Genre: Romance, Comedy
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 4th

    Summary:
    Ren and his sister run away from home and stumble upon an obscenely rich family. Desperate to be taken in, they swear oaths of fealty on their lives to become the personal servants of the family.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Where have I seen this premise before, I wonder? I have heard some good things about the game (though I'm not overly familiar with it... yet), so it'll probably be your standard romance/fanservice/comedy. I'm sure there will be worse shows around.

    True Tears
    http://www.truetears.jp/
    Studio: PA Works
    Genre: Drama
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 4th

    Summary:
    The game was a schedule-based dating sim (not hentai though) where your decisions could close off the heart and the secret of each girl. However... this is not based on the game it just shares the same name. There's not much more information about it specifically.

    Personal Thoughts:
    I like Broccoli. They brought me Galaxy Angel and Digi Charat. True Tears doesn't look anywhere near as interesting, but is apparently their new franchise. Hopefully they'll do a little bit better than the GA II adaptation, though I still can't see myself glued to watching this.

    Summary:
    The continuing story of an eternally depressed, suicidal teacher and his class of social misfits. Sequel series of the 2007 show of the same name.

    Personal Thoughts:
    I love Shaft, the first season was quality, I see no reason why the second won't be more of the same.

    Summary:
    Goro is an ace pitcher looking to capture fame and fortune on the baseball diamond. Continuing series starting in 2004.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Given that I haven't watched the first, second, or third season, I can't imagine that I'd start with the fourth.

    Studio: A-1 Pictures
    Genre: Fantasy, Action
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 5th (Special one hour screening on December 24th)

    Summary:
    Ten years after Persona 3's events, undead disguising themselves as humans roam the Earth calling themselves the 'reverse.' Three brothers come together to confront them.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Time to come clean. I don't like any of the MegaTen games. I've tried to play DDS, Persona, and the core series, but it just doesn't click. The promo for this one also makes things look very very boring with an emphasis on being spirit detectives more than spirit fighters, so unless it's very misleading, I'm not certain I could survive this one.

    http://www.ariacompany.net/
    Studio: Hal Film Maker
    Genre: Science Fiction, Drama
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 7th

    Summary:
    The continuing stories of the gondoliers in Neo Venezia and the people they encounter. Sequel of the series begun in 2005.

    Personal Thoughts:
    The first Aria put me to sleep, so I haven't followed the second... or the OVA. Or this one. What the hell is an "origination" anyway?

    http://www.gunslingergirl.com/
    Studio: Artland
    Genre: Action, Drama
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 7th

    Summary:
    Small girls near death are taken, rebuilt, and conditioned as cyborgs fiercely loyal to their handler in order to take care of the Italian government's dirty business. Sequel to the 2003 series of the same name.

    Personal Thoughts:
    I liked Gunslinger Girl, aside from the occasional rambling philosophy, so I'm sure this'll be good clean cyborgy waif fun. The only other thing of note is that the studio changed from the first one, but the actual staff involved is pretty much the same.

    spice.jpg

    Spice and Wolf
    http://www.spicy-wolf.com/
    Studio: Imagin
    Genre: Fantasy
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 8th

    Summary:
    A trader visits a village one day and comes upon a clever wolf spirit who manages to make a bargain with him to take her with him as she tries to make her way back to her home village.

    Personal Thoughts:
    All you need to know about this one is the studio doing it. Imagin makes Gonzo look good. Maybe they've picked up some tips from Madhouse in their collaborations, but I wouldn't count on it. When your solo portfolio is headlined by Cosprayers and Love, Love... you really have to wonder how they stay afloat. At least it should be good for fanservice.

    moegaku.jpg

    Moegaku ★ 5
    http://tv.moegaku.jp/
    Studio: AIC Spirits
    Genre: Magical Girl
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 14th

    Summary:
    Based on an English teaching parody of magical girls and pretty boys and all things that come with both of those.

    Personal Thoughts:
    I don't know, magical girl and bishie spoofs generally entertain me (see: Komugi, Dokuro, Punie, etc), but this looks... a bit frightening. I'm sure it'll be popular with at least a certain crowd thanks to Hirano Aya's involvement, so get used to memes from it populating the internet, even if it ends up being awful. Especially if it ends up being awful. There's also something wacky about its airing/schedule too that I couldn't quite decypher, so the start date may be somewhat off.

    yatterman.jpg

    Yatterman
    http://www.ytv.co.jp/yatterman/
    Studio: Tatsunoko Production
    Genre: Comedy
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers January 14th

    Summary:
    The legendary Skull Stone is said to be able to locate the largest concentrated amount of gold in the world. The Dorombo Gang is out to get it, but they'll be thwarted by bad information from their leader, as well as the constant interference from the super heroes calling themselves Yatterman. Remake of the 1970s series of the same name.

    Personal Thoughts:
    Believe it or not, I have seen a couple episodes of the old Yatterman. I remember being confused by the fact that it's basically a kids show, but the 'sexy' villainess ends up naked far more than you'd expect. The show was basically what you'd get if you followed Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale around for 20 minutes as they ineptly go after Moose and Squirrel. At the end of the day, it is a kid's show. I'm not sure how many banana peels, toy mecha, and juvenile slapstick I can stand before something ruptures in my brain.

    precure.jpg

    Yes! Precure 5 Go Go!
    http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/precure5_gogo/
    Studio: Toei Animation
    Genre: Magical Girl
    Information Links: ANN Entry
    Premiers February Unknown

    Summary:
    Pretty Cure 5, the magical girl super squad, returns to the fray to continue fighting the Nightmares out to rule the universe. Sequel to the 2007 series of the same name, which is a spinoff of the PreCure series starting in 2004.

    Personal Thoughts:
    First off, I find it very amusing that the fourth PreCure series was called "Yes! PreCure 5" (referencing a group of five instead of the normal duo). Second, remember back in 2004 when PreCure started? The first episode had some crazy martial arts action. Then, by episode 3, they were defeating enemies with music and Care Bear stares. I miss the PreCure that had martial arts. I also missed PreCure Max Heart, PreCure Splash Star, and Yes! Precure 5, so there are excellent odds that I'll miss Yes! PreCure 5 Go Go! too.

    Personally, my money's on Gunslinger Girl and... I'm not really certain what else. Spice and Wolf looks nowhere near as fanservicey as Imagin's previous solo offerings (not that that's any mean feat), but the promo didn't exactly make me think that it moved away from them either. I also never like counting Broccoli's stuff out, even after the horrible disaster of Angel Rune, so maybe True Tears will turn out okay, even though the game was supposedly somewhat mediocre at best.

    First impressions of stuff....
    AYAKASHI was awful. Rosario and H2O are varying levels of rampant unchecked fanservice, bad background music and freaky dancing horseheaded men.

    I'm obligated to watch Trinity Soul regardless, and I'll probably hate myself for it. The only connection to the game looks like Apathy Syndrome, and maybe the final boss*, and that's it.
    *The main character's Persona looks just like Nyx.

    I'll be content if it has at least one character from the games involved, even if it's just Igor.

    Speaking of, One Piece is more enjoyable than I thought it'd be. The art style grew on me after a while, and it's nice to have interesting and non-emo main characters. Now if only Usopp tripped and fell into a fire...

    Yeah, I saw one called Life Goes On and the other one was called "Country of Disease", with the subtitle "For You" if I recall correctly. Kino looks a little different in the second one.

    As for this coming season, I'll definitely be watching Macross Frontier if only for the very nicely executed CG sequences. If the rest of the series continues to be as enjoyable as the first episode (deculture lol), I'll definitely be watching.

    There's always Zetsubou 2, which is again being done by SHAFT.

    Admittedly, Mnesestarydaayeyeyune certainly has piqued my interest, what with the borderline hentai content. Though I'm not sure if it's for this season, is it?

    Hatenkou Yuugi/Dazzle's first episode was pretty quality. It does start kind of abruptly, with them going through the premise and teamup in about the first 2 minutes, but *shrug* It may be a little on the shoujou side for some people's tastes, but other than the motormouth rambling, I really like Rahzel. She's a sharp little cookie, which is always good times.

    Every season is mostly moeblob and harem crap. The trick is there's usually a few shows worth watching, and no doubt there will be some that have slipped under the radar of the previewers.

    Watch the show. Seriously. I don't like most anime all that much but it is one of the better ones I've ever watched. The characters are cyborg assassins built from the near-dead shells of little children. They do wet work missions for the Italian government. They handle it quite tastefully, I think. There isn't any of the usual anime ridiculousness, and it's actually quite depressing sometimes. It's like a vehicle for emotional gut punches.
