I've never understood the logic here. What their doing is illegal regardless of if the show is licensed or not so why should they stop subbing if it happens to be licensed.

In my opinion, whoever did those videos is an ass. I can understand complaining about the fansubs that do shoddy work with lots of typos and Engrish translations and all that, but bitching because a group puts in some Japanese honorifics or liner notes on screen is ridiculous. He claims that it takes "only half an hour to fansub anime." Right, as long as you don't factor in minor details like translating, editing, and quality checking. Many fansub groups put in a lot of time every week to give fans their stuff for free, and this guy's unhappy because he doesn't like their style.

And I agree with Archr5 that I'd much rather see notes on screen at the relevant time than look them in a text file afterwards. And there are plenty of times when it's best for certain Japanese terms or honorifics to be left untranslated. Like nakama, the one he complained about in the documentary - it doesn't translate very well to any English word, so I'd rather see it left untranslated than have the translators use friend/comrade/ally to approximate the meaning.

You left out timing and typesetting, which are a mother fucker when you are doing all sorts of signs and explanations.

watching some of the better PPD subs are almost like watching art. Like, tonnes of time and effort went into them. Even professionally subbed stuff doesn't do it as well.

I prefer Japanese terms for Japanese ideas. If it directly correlates to an english idea, use the english word.

you can download raws, and translations with timing. You don't like it, do it your damn self. You think you can translate it better, than do it. Set an example, if people like it other translators will follow suit.

I only bitch about them being slow or when infighting interferes with the release schedule. Baccano's had raws out for almost 48 hours, wtf?

because the studio's don't care too much in most cases(not enough to say anything), and no one else can say anything. It's not illegal. Illegal things are crimes. Governments punish crimes. It is a copyright violation, which is a civil mater, and requires a plaintiff. for now.

Publishing companies care, so the polite thing to do is not piss them off, and people can eventually buy it in a year or two when they catch up.

possibly after watching a horrible dub.

My understanding was that, until something is licensed in a country, no one has the rights for distribution in that country and therefore it wasn't illegal as there is no injured party within the jurisdiction of law of the downloader.

As redx said saying it was illegal is probably incorrect, however I would assume your breaking the copyright in which case I think that honor and politeness are kind of moot. I would also assume that the person who created the work (or the company) owns the rights for distribution in which case there is a injured party, not to mention that that your theoretically causes lose of sales for whoever eventually gets the license.

Also, the majority of the Japanese companies don't really care about english fansubs, as it doesn't really impact them. Only a couple have tried to go after fansubbers, and were pretty unsuccessful. I think a lot of the honor thing wasn't so much honor as it was covering their own butts legally, as the fansubbers and distributors would be the first in line if there was legal action over a licensed show.

It was honor because ADV, Animeigo, and Anime Village (now bandai entertainment) started as fansub groups in the late 80s/early 90s, and grew into legitimate businesses. So there was a sense of not fucking over people in your own community, and those companies used to pick their translators out of fansub groups as well.

Now that honor doesn't really exist, and there's a market crash because of the availabillity of fansubs, the price of single volumes at launch, and the over-saturated market.

It's a mix of everything that kinda ruined things. 25 bucks for a single volume was a bit nuts, though. I'm glad the half-season pack business model's starting to finally pick up.

The guy definitely has a point about how people seem to rush to subtitle before other groups, thus doing an inferior job.

The group that's farthest along with Persona Trinity Soul is terrible, they never translate words like "aniki" or "tomodachi", which means that the context of a statement is often nigh-unintelligible because you don't know which character they're talking about. Oh, and then they just call the rogue Persona users "Marebito" which is a word that means "Outsiders", but you would never know that watching the shitty fansub because they don't even have a info box to tell you that.

And while I'm talking about fansubs once again, I can't agree with that guy more about the karaoke subs that people do for OP and ED songs. I remember when fansubs used to just have the lyrics in english or in romanji on alternating episodes, just like a real subtitle job.

I agree with the part of there being way too much crap on the screen. But I don't really mind the karaoke thing as long as they don't get ridiculous with it.

They always do that stupid "fade away words as they are said" deal which is totally pointless if you're trying to READ it and they insist on having the english on the bottom, and then romanji AND kana on top.

If they do it right, it'll set up the rest of the series to be even cooler.

Although I still think they may regret getting rid of a few of those characters in the long run, Skipper in particular. It seemed like they could have done more with him.

Kurenai is just as good, but a little wierder... and the OP looks like a flash animation. A good one, but still a flash animation. And can anyone see my avatar moving?

I can, but I think it's due to inebriation.

Also, you can count me as one of those folks jumping on the Twenty Faces bandwagon.

I think that this is yet another example of what happens when the barriers to entry get lowered. In the old days, the sheer cost and lack of access to the gear needed meant that most fansub teams were made up of people who had ties to the broadcast industry, and as such had a professional attitude towards the work. Theses days, anybody who has a fast enough machine can work on subs, so now you have anyone who wants getting into the game - hence the situation we have now.

The forum software really hates animated avatars IIRC. I dunno if there's a workaround.
