Hello there.

I have searched for help on this, to no avail. This used to be simply an MSN issue I was having, but, I am figuring now that I am hitting something on my laptop that is causing my quotations and question mark to turn into És, and causing a whole whack of other keys to show up as god knows what.

I am expecting to be hideously embarrassed by a ridiculously simple answer, but I know that you guys can fix this for me and teach me how to be un-stupid about it.

So in short, my question mark is typing É instead. Id like for it to not do that, please.

Edit: I have already checked all my language settings. They are all English.

It looks like your keyboard language is set up to be Spanish or something and not English. You should be able to change it in the control panels.

alt+shift toggles through languages enabled, try that. (it's iffy from experience, try right alt -> left shift)

You haven't spilled anything on the keyboard, have you? I spilled some water on an old keyboard of mine once and it went apeshit in a manner similar to what you describe.

Are the keys consistant? Would you, for example get "x" every time you push the "a" key? Or are they totally random?

I am having the same the problem. I'll be playing WoW and then all of a sudden my keyboard starts using the dark red characters on the keyboard instead of the normal ones. Must be some combo of keys that changes it to that, but I have yet to find which.

Are any of your language or keyboard settings set to English (Canadian)?

    Try English (United States) instead.

By default Windows XP's language bar has a shortcut to switch between English and French (If your language is set to Canadian English). The shortcut is left Ctrl + left Shift. So either use the shortcut if/when it happens, or do as Ruckus says and switch your language.

Left alt + right shift never fails me, are you sure its left ctrl + left shift? That does nothing for me, and I'm using XP

I've also tried any combination of left/right alt+shift, the only one that does NOT work is right alt + right shift.

This happens to me on my laptop at home a lot. It's usually random, as far as I can tell, but who knows. I usually just restart my computer through Windows and it fixes it.

I have no idea what causes it and I have no idea where I would ever accidentally hit those key combinations you guys are talking about. Whenever it's happened and I've checked, my keyboard is still set to English. Oh well. Restarting helps.

can i blame vista for this ... i`d really like to

I remember that being CTRL-SHIFT. Cause it happens about once every time I play an FPS at an LAN cafe in Hong Kong.

If you look in region and option settings, you can hotkey both changing forward and changing back to CTRL+SHIFT, ALT+SHIFT, or even `.

Spooky! I came by this forum to ask the exact same question today. My problem is indeed that my keyboard is English-Canadian and alt-shift (both on the left worked fine for me) is the magic combination to change it back.

Looks like your ' is off as well. either that or you use the key to the left of the 1 button for apostrophes instead of normal people.

Most likely he (she?) used that one because his normal apostrophe was typing "È". Hence the question.

Oh duh. I just read questions marks and not quotations.

    Apologies.

I guess swap out keyboards and see if it still happens? If it does, it's software related, otherwise it's keyboard related?

Check the Keyboard layout, not just the language, If you have the language set to English (US) but the keyboard layout set to English (Canadian) or even Multilingual, you'll run in to this very issue.

Unless you've already tried that, then if so, disregard this post.
