http://www.gdconf.com/OPENING NOTES
The Game Developer's Conference, the annual first quarter event for games industry personnel seasoned and young. Set for February 18th to the 22nd of this year at the Moscone Center in San Francisco (20th to 22nd if you're not attending tutorials), there is no better expo for converging with like minded developers and journalists, discussing and revelling in interactive entertainment's innermost facets, and subsequently expanding the field in the process.
In the past few years incredible panels and keynotes have been held diving into fun topics like Shigeru Miyamoto's life mentalities, post mortems/developer commentaries and assets for completed games, and in recent years the grand unveiling of products like Sony's Home and Little Big Planet, while also focusing heavily on deeper topics ranging from specific shader techniques in Direct X 10, to business support workshops for how to manage a small development house, to cross marketing a franchise or Tim Schaefer's take on great character design. If your passion runs deeper than just playing games and leaving them, this is the show for you.
This thread will be for everyone who wants to goto GDC so that we can help each other with lodging, attendance, meetups, and anything else that is asked.
REQUIREMENTS
Unlike E3 which has gone completely invite only, GDC is similar to PAX and E for All in it's open door policy to the community (for the most part). No prerequisites are needed outside of money. Potentially LOTS of money.
COSTShttp://www.gdconf.com/register/passoptions.htm
Depending on what options appeal to you for GDC, costs of attending are between $175 and $1500 before January 16th, and $200 to $2000 if you register after the 16th. Click the link to see what each type of pass offers. Hotels are on GDC discount until the 28th of January and are going relatively quickly. The best way of course to balance a budget for these shows is to split a room and plan well ahead to make sure you get the best use of your money while attending this event.
PAFORUMER ATTENDENCE AND ORGANIZATION
In order to organize potential room sharing, meetups, and to plan ahead as best as possible, knowing who's going is key along with helping each other out. Below will be a list of people planning on attending the event and their relevent information.
ALL INFO WILL LISTED AS BELOW LISTED IN THE EXAMPLE BELOW! Try to figure out your situation as soon as possible and to confirm soon as well since people dropping out unexpectedly can horribly cripple other people's accounts or ruin their trip.
USERNAME - ATTENDENCE STATUS AND PASS TYPE(confirmed or unconfirmed) - DAYS ATTENDING - HOTEL AND TRANSPORT STATUS***********LIST OF PAFORUMERS ATTENDING*************
1.) ArcticXC - confirmed expo pass - 19th to 23rd - staying with a friend.
2.) Raslin - Student Pass(confirmed) - 22rd - BART and my house
Discuss the event, plan your attendance, and help each other access and enjoy GDC 08 as best we can!

Every year since Spore got announced, I see people expecting a big E3-like blitz and every year they don't get anything close to what they want. GDC really is focused on the developers rather than the players.
Always good to have this voiced loud as possible. Game DEVELOPERS Conference lives up to it's name, and is meant for those in the field or those will specific interest in the development field.
Gah, i have less than two months to get my portfolio ready. I went last year, the career expo was awesome and I expect it to be just as cool this year. Imma get me a job damnit.

You're only going to be there one day, and on a day that the show isn't on? That's somewhat confusing. :P
Hopefully everything goes well for you. I'm sure a bunch of PAers would love to see your work at somepoint.
Thought the 23rd was friday for whatever reason.
Also, its not as though I haven't gotten anything done yet

Prop!
Changed.
Will keep the list updated and help out where I can.
猿も木から落ちる
pretty sure i'll be getting the expo pass cause i'm poor as hell
What is the best sort of price I could hope to get on a hotel in San Fran?
get me a job at NIS and i'll give you hawt scrawny white guy sechs and alcohol.
seriously though if you guys want to get together i'm down as well
The hotel I booked was Hotel Whitcomb for $129 a night for 2 double beds, its like 5 blocks away from the convention center
Anyway, turns out I'll only be going for one day on that Friday, flying in that morning and out that evening, so I doubt I'll be able to make it to any functions outside the event itself.
Sucks that the London GDC got canned. And that Develop '07 ended up sucking.
Houk can attend in spirit!
i may be up for it, i'm coming down on tuesday afternoon as well but i'll be with 6 schoolmates, depending on what they want to do(probably nothing really fun) I'll come hang out
God, I'm so doomed.
OP says cost starts around $175, but the GDC site says a student pass is $75.
$175 is the expo pass for wednesday - friday.
that is until the 16th when it becomes $195
For people who've gone before, anything to know about the student pass? Any cool seminar or workshop we sorry souls have access to? Or do we just get to see richer people walk into the rooms where the magic happen?
I wonder if I should call them and ask wtf...
Did... did you just call the bay area SoCal?
Do not say that here. I'm warning you now. This is considered NorCal, and we take it seriously.
Also, I know a couple good places to eat in the city, and a bunch of bad ones. If you can find it, Elite Restaurant is awesome.

Ah, forgive my unknowing Ohioan ways. Myself and a group of friends will be staying at a hostel about half a mile from the convention center, and one of the things we're chiefly worried about in terms of budget is food. Trips to GenCon and Origins have taught me that one should pretty much never eat at a con center unless one has a terrible hatred of both good food and money so I'm trying to hunt down good yet affordable places to eat.

I just signed up for it. Thanks for reminding me!
I'll probably be heading there with other folks from work. It'll be fun to see how this shindig is, compared to others I've been to!

I'll probably be there with a Shoryuken or Hadoken shirt on. The ones from the PA store.
Then agian, I may be there in a suit. Not sure what the dress portocol is for one of these things.
You can find pics from last year's IGDA party here: http://www.igda.org/gdc08/rsvp_gdcparty_08.php. As you can see, it's casual.
Back to GDC, apparently I will be spending some time at the recruiting booth. Yay? I'll know more about it in a few weeks. I'll post again then. However, if anyone lives in the Seattle area and really serious (2+ years of experience) about web/platform testing, PM me.
