Okay, new Tennis game coming up from Sega. I'll be buying this one based on characters/locales alone, though it coming from the same company that brought us numerous excellent Virtua Tennis games doesn't hurt. Coming to every console/handheld with the exception of the PSP.

The game will include 16 playable characters from Sega franchises, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Fighter, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5 and many others. It will also feature 10-20 different courts varying on system.

For Reference, Sumo Digital is responsible for the recent Outrun games.

I've been watching this game for a while, and it looks great. I mean, visually, it looks fantastic. That is probably the best imaging of a classic sonic level in 3D EVER. Also:

No, it's a mix of all the classic sega icons. I can't remember where I saw it, but I saw a screenshot with Opa-Opa in it. Fucking Opa-Opa!!

Also look at the green hill screen shot, there's a motobug.

Ristar was originally the concept for Sonic the Hedgehog. Developed in concept in 1990, Ristar began as a bunny rabbit who used his ears to pick up rings and throw them at enemies. Yuji Naka thought this gameplay element slowed the game down too much, and when the switch was made to a hedgehog, the idea came up to let the player turn into a ball and throw themselves at enemies instead of rings, hence the stretchy ears idea was dropped. Interestingly enough, this idea would get revisited years later in Sonic Adventure 2 when Sonic gained the ability to throw rings.

Internal Sega concept art when Sonic and Ristar where the same character:
    sonic1rabbitqv7.png

Anyways, after Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic team returned to make their next game. Resurrecting the idea of being able to stretch your ears, the game was reborn as feel, where you played a small black ball with 2 long yellow ears who used his hands to grab at stuff and throw them. At the last minute, Feel was changed to ristar, and the character was redrawn to resemble a star.

Ristar runs on the same game engine as Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and uses the same graphics compression.

A beta image of Ristar back when he was Feel:

EDIT: I meant Sonic Adventure 2, not Sonic Advanced 2.

Is it too much to hope for some Streets of Rage 2 characters or levels? I'd say Clockwork Knight, but everyone else seems to hate that franchise. Plus, I'm not sure if Sega even remembers that it exists.

Still, I'm thrilled about the Jet Set Radio representation. If the Wii controls are good, I'll pick this up.

Sega picked a good time to release this. I've been pining for their glory days ever since NiGHTS 2 came out.

This looks fantastic. I'll be getting this.

All they have to do is include 3 control schemes:

    1. Traditional Wii Sports Tennis, for 'casual gamers'
    2. Include completely traditional controls using the nunchuck+wii remote (think Mario Strikers)
    3. Some kind of mode that works exactly like Wii Sports Tennis, except with the nunchuck attached to move your character.

If they do that, they please everyone. I'd personally be most excited about an 'expanded' Wii Sports Tennis control scheme with the nunchuck, but I'd really want them to include the original Wii Sports style control because I know so many people that love Wii Sports Tennis and it'd be a shame to not allow them to jump right into a new, fully fledged Tennis game on the Wii.

    From an interview at IGN:
IGN: As far as control goes, how will the Wii version specifically be played? Will players use motion controls for swinging? Does the game make use of IR for the interface?

Woodley: There are three mains controls when playing the Wii version of SEGA Superstars Tennis. There's the Wii Remote classic style where you can play with conventional controls using the directional pad to move your player and buttons for shots. With the Wii Remote IR motions, you can use the tilt sensitivity to influence a character's run behavior combined with IR motion sensitive moves. Finally, with the Nunchuk controls, you use the analog stick to move your player and the swing the Wii Remote to perform different shots.

slash's #3 is in the game, at least.

    Also...
IGN: What type of multiplayer features can players expect? Will we see online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, or is it local multiplayer only?

Woodley: SEGA Superstars Tennis is twice as much fun once you get a doubles match going on and the game supports 2-4 players. The game does not support Nintendo Wi-Fi connection at this time and only supports local multiplayer.

I'm shocked that the 360/PS3 versions have online play while the Wii doesn't. Especially since Ghost Squad and NiGHTS have online modes. (Sega: Putting WiFi in games that don't need it and leaving it out of the ones that do.)

EDIT: Some impressions while I upload some screenshots to image shack

-The DS version looks DAMN good considering the hardware
-The PS2/Wii versions look identical. The wii version is almost assuredly a PS2 port, not the other way around.
-The NiGHTS level is based off of Aqua Garden from Journey of Dreams
-The sega press names for these screenshots indicate that the 360 is the lead console for the next gen versions

Well shit... image shack just died. So I'll post the remaining Wii screenshots and the next-gen screenshots later.

Nice. Thanks for the screens, TSR.

As far as the Wii version, I don't mind so much if it's a PS2 port, because I think it looks just fine. What I would want out of it as far as graphics go is widescreen and 480p support.

Most importantly, though, is that I want really, really good Wii controls. That is the essential and most important aspect of a Tennis game on the Wii. If they do it well, then I couldn't care less about the graphics. Which appear to be just fine in my book.

Image shack came back up, so I posted the Wii screenshots, now I'm uploading the next gen screenshots.

EDIT: Actually, this next gen press pack looks identical to the one that was released months ago so no new next gen screenshots.

    EDIT DOS: But for fun:

Shibuya looks like a definite highlight. I'm no tennis fan, but the JSR fan in me really wants this. :|
