im under the impression that the style of the game is like virtua tennis with sega charaters? thats cool, but that trailer made me realise that i would love an exaggerated style of each chararacter running after the ball and delivering a grand smash like something from mario strikers. no doubt this will be fun in multiplayer though, as the cpu in virtua tennis kicked my ass.

oh man, when sonic ran through the loop-de-loop, it caused all my neck hairs to stand on end.

    This game = totally boughtened.

Along with Samba de Amigo on the Wii.

It's almost like Sega is finally listening... :)

Re-reading the blurb it got in Game Informer, they already revealed one of those 'secret' characters there. I guess that's why I wondered why he wasn't in it earlier.

Alright, details about the gameplay have surfaced and it sounds fucking AWESOME.

The basic gameplay is near identical to Virtual Tennis 3 (which is a very good thing) with s a few major twists. First and foremost, powerups from the video games represented appear and can be collected, yielding mario-tennis like results. In addition, each successful volley fills a super meter for your character. When the super meter is full, you can pull the trigger to unleash a special attack. Sonic, for example, turns into super sonic which puts more speed onto the ball, robotnik unleashes a barrage of missiles which can knock your opponent out, etc.

in addition, the game features Adventure mode, which plays like Super Smash Bros' Brawl style SSE mode mixed with Virtua Tennis. In this mode, you travel through game-inspired tennis courts completing tasks. For example, in the jet set radio level, you must play tennis while simultaniously playing a scaled back version of jet set radio - collecting spray paint cans, tagging targets, and avoiding police (who build up just like in JSR as you complete your task) or a House of the Dead level where you must kill advancing zombies using your tennis ball.

...fucking AWESOME. It's also coming out march 31st.

And to clarify, each tennis court has a sega superstars mode corresponding to it, which mixes the original game with tennis. I cannot fucking wait to see what happens on the Outrun stage.

The Wii version lacks online mode, however. BUUUT, it's gameplay has been described as Virtua Tennis 3... controlled similarly to Wii Sports Tennis..

The PS3 and 360 versions are identical, and Sega has worked on a middle ware online component which works with Xbox Live and PSN to ensure that their online segments are identical. meaning in the PS3 version, you can access your friends list in-game, along with sending and receiving messages to others, even those not playing the game.

Oh and each version will have a special console specific game mode, similar to how the 3 versions of Soul Calibur 2 recieved console exclusive characters. The details haven't been specified, but the modes are being built for the ground up to cater to the strengths of each system. Oh, and 14 franchises will be represented in the game.

And just in case you guys are still worried - this is being made by the team which made Virtua Tennis 3 and outrun 2.

So, more JGR vets, maybe? Mew and Cube would be good.

    Also, :^: to Reala.

The only way this could get better is if the Burning Rangers show up.

14 franchises are gonna be represented, and we only know about 9 of them so far. So keep your fingers crossed.

    I mean, if
    Alex Kidd
and Space Harrier made it in, I don't see why Burning Rangers wouldn't.

If this is anything like an expanded Wii Sports Tennis, then it will be worth it.

But if not, I'm almost ready to buy in just for all of the cool franchises that they're representing here.

Fortunately, I don't feel as though I have to worry about gameplay, with the Virtua Tennis 3 team behind this.

I'm just crossin' my fingers that the Wii controls work really well. Shame about the online, though, but I don't think I'll care if I can get some good games-on going with friends.

any word on if there's going to be a classic tennis mode to this (no power-ups and whatnot)? Virtua Tennis on the DC really didn't need much changed about it, and I don't want this to go the way of Mario Power Tennis, so it'd be cool if they had a choice of playing it all vanilla-like.

I hope this series takes off. The first Sega Superstars was very meh, but it was an eyetoy game. This one is looking much, much better.

I'm liking that Sega's been giving it's other divisions a lot more love. Last gen, its was pretty much Sonic Team doing everything. It's been high time they let AM2 and people working close to them take the reigns back.

I have been impressed with Sega's offerings lately and feel like they have been one of the few to actually put some considerable effort into their Wii offerings. However in saying that, it is pretty disappointing to hear that the Wii version is like a straight ps2 port with wii controls. The wii controls (if play well) are a definite plus, but considering what they have done with the Wii with past games (I thought some parts in Sonic, like the last level, and some levels in Nights were pretty stunning as well as Monkeyball's graphical style + 60fps), it is just flat out disappointing.

I'd love to see Sega spinoff games become as prevalent as Nintendo/Mario games. Sega fighting games, other sports games, puzzle games...

Only semi-related...I'd also love more online PSO-style 'create a character' games in the Sega universes. Jet Set World, some sorta Space Channel 5 online dancing MMO, Sonic Adventure Online (with the Archie Comics universe license?).

Each version has a console specific mode. The classic mode, Sega Mode, and Sega Superstar mode are identical across all consoles (except the wii version, which has wii sports style controls), but the console specific modes will be build ground up for their respective console in order to take advantage of their strengths. They haven't described them in detail yet other than saying each console-specific mode is being built from the ground up. So the wii version (and DS version) will probably have some pretty unique stuff. I'm guessing the PS3 version will have some sort of motion control as well.

Classic mode is straight up Virtua Tennis style gameplay. Sega Mode is virtua tennis with super meters, power ups, etc. Sega Superstars mode is the 1 player game where you have objectives for each level (like the JSR level where you spray paint, the chu-chu rocket level, etc).
