Sega Superstars Tennis -- THE BEST TENNIS GAME EVAR!? (NSF56K!)
Posts
You could also play the 'Janet' from Virtua Cop 2, Rent-A-Hero from "Rent-A-Hero" (A japan only Sega game) and two things from Sonic - The Fighters.
Also, at the time, people weren't aware, but the entire move set from Virtua Fighter 3 was included for all the characters, and Aoi is actually in the game (Janet is actually Aoi - she has all the moves).
It was pretty badass to buy the game, then several months later play Virtua Fighter 3 in the arcades and come home only to learn that the moves from VF3 were in the game and undocumented.
...nah, I'm kidding. It sounds pretty damn nifty, though playable zombies would be a plus.
I guess I should have looked harder than the op and scanning a bit of the thread.
And the other is Amy.
I kind of would have liked to see someone from Altered Beast though. Or Burning Rangers, Clockwork Knight, Golden Axe...

Like what?
I think I've heard of all of these.

I recognize:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Amy Rose
Dr. Eggman
and Knuckles.
Rest, I don't remember at all. Maybe if I had a picture with each, but then again, Sonic really has been the most memorable of Sega's original titles for me.
It kind of already did.
Except it is no way near as good as it could have been. Like no way near.
It is still pretty neat though.
That was a pretty fun game and one of the weirder imports I got for the DC. Didn't play around with it long enough to discover if there was a way to "beat" it though, it just seemed to keep going and going.
So is it true,
Fucking
Awesome.
I've had a bunch of friends round to play it and it's been so much fun. The wii controls work very well, much like Wii Sports except with the ability to use the nunchuck to move around. Alternative control options are available, including one which makes the game play exactly like Wii Sports (control wise) and a classic one where the controller is held on it's side.
Very glad I picked it up.

I've been dying for a full fledged Wii Sports Tennis since launch.. oh man..

It'd take a miracle to get anything past her.
There is a PS2 version, right? I don't think I've seen it yet. I hope it's not a full-priced game.
Seeing as though there's some vague interest, this is how the control schemes go:
Control Scheme One:
Only the Wiimote. Your character positions themself automatically and you swing to hit the ball. Swinging harder DOES seem to hit the ball harder, but I couldn't be positive, it may just be the same as pressing a button on the 360/ps3 controller
Holding A whilst swinging will do a lob shot.
Holding B whilst swinging will do a drop shot.
(Or the other way around, I can't remember).
Hitting A + B will launch your characters super-move.
Control Scheme Two:
EXACTLY the same as the above, except you use the nunchuck to control where your character runs to.
Control Scheme Three:
You hold the Wii-mote on it's side, like a nes pad, and play the game like the 360 version. This control scheme is clearly for losers.
The game itself looks lovely, someone chastised it for just being a PS2 conversion, but if this is what the PS2 version looks like then kudos to the team that programmed it. It won't win any awards graphically but it's functional, bright and clear.
I believe, although I haven't tested it, you can turn off the "super abilities" and play pretty much a normal game of tennis, so it should scratch that "fleshed out wii-tennis" itch. Up to now I've found the abilities fun though. Sonic goes super sonic (in a very quick cut-scene which is mildly jarring mid game but not game breaking) and smacks the ball about so it bounces randomly on the opposite court. Tails wooshes the ball upwards in a hurricane with his...erm...tails.
I haven't had chance as of yet to try out the other characters due to being busy.
Anyway, if you liked Wii Tennis, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this. Also I was surprised how many Sega characters I knew

As a player of the PAL Wii version I would like to stress that the game is buggy as hell, now I hope this is just my copy but I'll outline a couple of bugs just in case it isn't.
Tails and Beat both randomly freeze when using the Wii-remote and nunchuck control scheme, i haven't yet replicated this with any other control scheme but it happens frequently enough to be annoying in tournament doubles.
Twice the game has frozen the wii, i must stress i use my wii quite a lot and no other game has done this even since the crashes!
Wii remotes seem to randomly un sync from the game even though still synced to the console needing a dropping back to the wii-menu and restarting the game (reset just doesn't cut it in this instance).
HOWEVER!!
When this game works it is excellent, it's definitely a wii-sports beater in multiplayer, a 4 way game is the most fun i've had on the wii so far (Multi player that is, nothing has yet topped the joy of SMG).
The Superstar mode is a fun addition and certainly not a game breaker as it only lasts for one point (although clever play on that point will mean your charge doesn't drop all the way back to an empty star), the characters are fun to use, even if Nights does have a god damn awful voice, and the mini games and unlockables are fun and easy enough to achieve that it doesn't feel like a Mario and Sonic at the Olympics slog fest.
Anyway, please be gentle!
Buttons
...is a secret character. That's pretty cool.
I dunno.
Don't get me wrong - I grew up as a Sega boy. I only moved off Sega when the DC died a horrible death. The Master System was my first console, and I beleive the Mega Drive is the best console I've ever owned.
..but this game has made me think - man - Sega doesn't have that many Superstars.
Looking at the full character line-up, I see a lot of abandoned characters from aparrently abandoned series' (Which is awesome but it just makes their absence that more saddening), Sonic Characters, Sonic Characters, and... Monkey Ball Characters.
It reminds me to ask Sega what happened to Streets of Rage (why cancel the DC one?), Vectorman, Shenmue and such - hell, I can think of so many things that should be represented in this that as far as I know aren't - Columns, Hang On, Space Harrier etc..
I dunno. I kinda want this game (love Virtua tennis, want it for Sonic/NiGHTs/Golden Axe/JSR), but coming off the back of Smash Bros it so seems like a lacklustre 'mascot battle royale' game. That + the review scores has held me off so far. Sigh..

You had me at Wii Sports with movement Mr. Grinch. Thats what I was waiting to hear before buying.
Bought so hard.
Worth the money?
So, this game is now $20 for every system, $15 for the NDS.
So I bought it!
The Wii Remote standard config is supposed to work like Wii Sports. The manual says you can lob by making an upward motion. However, the only way I can figure out how to lob is by holding A when hitting.
How the hell do I put spin on the ball to curve its trajectory?
Aiming by the standard controls seems to work like Wii sports though; based on timing. So I'm pleased with that. Serving is great, too; you have a meter but it also measures the force you swing with.
I just need to figure out how to curve the shots...
So far it's a neat game. The graphics are pretty nice too; definite aesthetic design that lends itself to the Wii.

It could use a better selection of characters, but I had a great time with it.
I figure I'll only really use the Wii Sports style and Wii Sports + Nunchuck style. But I wish there was some.. clear explanation about how to do topsin and curves and lobs with the Wii Remote by itself config.

This game lies.
The "standard" wii-mote only controls? The manual lies. The premise is a lie.
It is not like Wii Sports tennis.
In Wii Sports tennis, you controlled the game as such:
1. You aimed your shots based on the timing of your swing. You could swing early to aim a shot narrow, swing "on time" to aim forward, or swing late to aim wide.
2. You could swing the wii remote level to hit the ball straight. You could lob by swinging upward, and shoot the ball low by swinging downward.
3. You could cause the ball to curve by twisting your wii remote as you swung. So you could cause the ball to curve in its trajectory as it flew toward your opponent.
Sega Superstars Tennis? The Standard wii-mote only controls? Absolutely nothing like that.
1. Aiming the ball is completely automatic. It doesn't matter your timing of your swing, the game will decide where to hit the ball. If you want to decide where to hit it, then you have to tell it by holding the direction on the Dpad. Which is awkward and unnecessary when they could have done it like Wii Sports.
2. The manual says you can lob by making an upward motion. This is completely untrue. You cannot lob in this manner, and the in-game controls screen shows as much. You can only lob by holding A as you swing. Secondly, you can only aim low/drop shot by holding B as you swing. It is not like Wii Sports in that you swing up for a long, or down for a drop. It was nice, intuitive, and fun to be able to swing a certain way and have the ball naturally flight in the expected path. Not the case in Sega SS Tennis; you hold a button as you swing to determine drop/lobs.
3. You cannot curve the ball by swinging a certain way. Curves are controlled completely by the dpad after you've swung. Which is really awkard, especially if you hold the pad for too long, because the standard wiimote controls will cause the Dpad to control where your character runs after he's swung, so you end up running in some odd place after you've attempted to curve the ball. This is also unnecessary and awkward and makes the game hard to play, whereas Wii Sports made it easy and intuitive, as shots curving the ball are similarly done to the real life motion. And they don't screw up where your character is standing.
With Nunchuck controls, all of the above is exactly the same, except the control stick on the Nunchuck takes over the function of what the DPad does. This is a hell of a lot more functional and sensible.
The "traditional" controls are pretty awful. You turn the wiimote sideways like a NES pad. You control where you go and where you shoot the ball with the Dpad as well as the curve of the shots. You have 4 different types of shots mapped to only 2 buttons; and so two functions (drop shots/lob) are done by rolling your thumb from 1 to 2, or 2 to 1. It can be difficult to pull off sometimes in the heat of a match.
The Classic Controller is supported, but the game comes with no documentation on how its used, nor an ingame option for it. So you plug it in, and .. choose what? Standard? Nunchuck? Traditional control method? I have no idea. X and Y do apparently nothing, and I can't figure out how to properly do all of the shots with the given buttons....
So basically it boils down to this:
The only way to get the most out of the characters' abilities is to use the Nunchuck Controls - the wii remote and nunchuck. You get access to all of the moves in an accessible way and you get analog control over your character without fear of him running off at the wrong time.
Standard wiimote controls will have your character moving for you like Wii Sports, which is fine, but unfortunately you have no control over him other than when to swing, and lob/drop - no control over your aim, certain shot types, the speed, the angle, etc. Nothing like that, while you do in Wii Sports. It's just swing when the ball is close, holding A or B or not, that's it. Unless you want things to get awkward and uncomfortable by fiddling with the Dpad during this.
It would have been very simple, I imagine to implement controls just like Wii Sports. Nintendo already laid the groundwork. All they had to do was copy it. It was so simple and so effective and so popular among Wii Sports tennis players. And Sega just decided to drop that in favor of something far more awkward and ineffective.
Finally, the Nunchuck controls I mentioned. Sounds good, right? Control the shot type, control where you go, control where you shoot, etc. Analog control over movement. But after all this, it begs the question - why even bother making a "Swing of the Wii Remote" the only way to hit the ball? Ultimately, this is the only really good control method, but what ends up happening is that the only thing swinging the remote does is tell your character "to swing" and that's it. A this point it begs the question: why not just let there be a button to press for hitting the ball. Because swinging is, essentially, just a gesture mapped to a button press. Instead of giving the player meaningful control by using the style of the swing.
So there ya go. It's still a good Tennis game, but unfortunately, Sega kind of failed to live up to the promise of a full-fledged Wii Sports game. It's a great tennis game with lots of meat on it, but it doesn't take advantage of the Wii remote's features to any great extent. Certainly not as great an extent as Wii Sports does.
Even so, I imagine it's fun in groups, even with casual gamers, because even though they don't have as much control when using Standard controls, they can still play, and traditional gamers can be satisfied with Nunchuck controls.
The quest for the "full fledged Wii Sports Tennis game" continues...
edit: I hope someone comes here and shows me that I missed somethign obvious and actualy everything works awesome. But I've experimented like crazy and it just won't work as the manual depicts..
Steam ID: slashx000______Twitter: @bill_at_zeboyd______ Facebook: Zeboyd Games
This is absolutely fucking idiotic.
The manual tells you all these ways you can do lob shots and top spin and other things with the Standard wii remote controls - BUT NONE OF THAT WORKS AT ALL.
IT IS A LIE.
The wii remote controls DO NOTHING. You CANNOT lob a shot by making an upward motion. YOU CANNOT make a drop shot by doing a less powerful upward motion. You CANNOT put top spin on it like you with with a regular racket. YOU CANNOT put spin on the ball by turning the wii remote before, during, after your swing or any combination there-of in any speed or direction thereof.
Has ANYONE figured out how to do ANYTHING with the Standard Controls besides just the regular return hit?
ANYTHING. I can't do lobs, I can't do drop shots, I can't do topspin, I can't do slices. I can't do underarm serves. I CAN'T DO SHIT and the manual either doesn't SAY AT ALL, or what it says SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK WHATSOEVER.
Can anyone help me out here?
