Recently, Xbox.com posted a letter from Marc Whitten, General Manager of Xbox LIVE, thanking subscribers for their patience with the service. We’ve implemented several improvements to the service, to help ensure ongoing reliability and performance. As the popularity of Xbox LIVE expands, we’ll continue to closely monitor the service and make adjustments. As always, if you are having any problems, please contact your local support (1-800-4-MYXBOX in North America) so that we can assist you.
Marc announced that all Xbox LIVE members (Gold and Silver) around the world would have access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game to download free of charge. We’re pleased to announce that beginning next Wednesday, 2:00 a.m. PST through Sunday, 11:59 p.m. PST, Xbox LIVE members worldwide can download the full version of the recent award-winning Xbox LIVE Arcade game, Undertow.
Developed by Chair Entertainment Group, Undertow is one of the highest-rated and best looking games available on Arcade. Undertow redefines aquatic based shooters through a mix of high-definition graphics, intuitive controls and multiple modes of game play action. The game features a full story driven-single player campaign, on and offline co-op, and multiplayer for 2-16 players over Xbox LIVE for Gold subscribers. Players battle for control of the oceans as one of three selectable races, each with four unique, upgradeable units. "Undertow" is available worldwide (normally 800 Microsoft Points) and is rated E10+.

During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.

My money's on Yaris.
Seriously, it will probably be something underwhelming, but it's nice that they're giving away something to make up for it.

To be honest I hope it's a new release ... I have a ton of XBLA titles already knowing my luck it will be one I already own.

As for the free game? I'm thinking its going to be something out of left field. Probably not something high quality like SotN or Pac Man, but probably not Joust or Gauntlet or Frogger.
I'm thinking something along the lines of Marathon 2.
Everyone who hasn't bought Pac-Man CE at this point deserves to have all of XBLA stripped out of their 360s!
It'll be interesting to see how this pans out; I'm in the camp that thinks it'll be a tossaway game, but leaving it open-ended like this will just make the backlash over the impending crappy game worse. If it said "a free copy of Ms. Pac-Man" now, people will just kind of

In all honesty it is one of the best titles available on XBLA. It sits up their with Geometry Wars in terms of awesomeness.
Pac-Man CE is the LSD-infused love child of Geometry Wars and Wario Ware. It's awesome.

Why the fuck won't they release that gamecube promo pacman where you had to use a game boy advance to play it..! That would work so well on live, and it's fucking awesome. It's better than C.E.
edit: also, yeah, silver members will probably get screwed, but in all fairness, you're not paying for the crappy online play either.

And if the problem was with playing games over Live, then yeah, Silver uses could well have been left out of it, since they don't play on Live. BUT, it's good to see them doing that for everyone, now I just wonder who they're negotiating with to give their game away for free.
Absolutely It won't be Carcassone but was just using that as an example but yeah I just hope they give you a couple choices just in case you already own the one they offer for free.

actually, either joystiq or engadget(can't remember which atm) confirmed that even silver members will get the free game.
I dislike Geometry Wars
They also said they were the first console to reach 10 million SOLD in the summer, then it turns out the Wii beat them.
