I'd rather just play land-grab on halo 3, but it's a neat little free game. It's not like they'd give away something like Rez for random online troubles.

Yeah, I downloaded Undertow a few hours back, and it's really kinda bad. I'm not complaining or angry or anything; it's free after all. But there's a fairly large number of better choices on there.

They gave us like, the shittiest game ever for free.
Thanks MS. :^:
Yes, there's a reason it's free, unfortunately.
I have to concur with that. This is one of the stupidest games I have ever played. I should have taken door #2 and called MS and asked for points instead.
Live and Learn ...
Wait, even if you don't already own the game you can call and get 800 points?
I could use 800 points.
No, the 800 points refund would only be for people who already bought the game. Why would they just randomly give out 800 points and the free game?
And I think you guys are being pretty harsh on Undertow -- I tried the demo when it came out, and it seemed cool enough but just not $10 of cool. $FREE of cool is perfect. It's a 2-D class-based Domination game akin to Soldat with nice graphics. You people must not play a lot of XBLA games to think this is terrible! I've seen unspeakable horrors in those other demos.
I would of rather had 800 points for rez when it comes out.
Undertow is certainly one of those love it or hate it game so, from the perspective, probably not the best choice for a "we're sorry" gift.
However it isn't at all a bad game. It executes everything well and has a high level of polish for an XBLA title. If you don't like the type of gameplay, well, you don't like it but it is balanced and controls well.
I liked the trial version, but I've got too many Arcade games that I enjoyed, then never played again, so I didn't buy it. As such, I'm happy to be getting it for free.
I would of rather had 800 points for rez when it comes out.
Well, yeah, me too, but the likelihood of that has always been zero. It'd be like asking Nintendo to make Super Smash Bros. Brawl free to apologize for the game's delay ... we can all wish for it, but it just ain't happening.
We should try to arrange some big Game Ons; I feel like team games like this would flourish well in PA matches.

I forget who pointed it out to me earlier, but it makes a lot of sense: All of the other games MS has given out for free at some point (Aegis Wing, Texas Hold 'Em, Carcassone, Uno IIRC) are very multiplayer-focused, which will tempt more people into going for/sticking with Live Gold. In that light Undertow makes a ton of sense, plus it helps that it apparently sold pretty poorly despite good reviews, so odds are a lot of people didn't already have it.
Yeah, giving 800MS points to every gamertag on Live would have cost Microsoft millions of dollars and been very unfair to the people with only one gamertag. This way they give the same thing to everyone and they probably only had to pay a fraction of that amount to the Undertow makers. XBox Live members get a free game, the Undertow makers get a nice chunk of money for a game that wasn't selling very well, and Microsoft gets good will and more Gold subscriptions in the future.

Even 400 points would be awesome. I don't think it would be THAT substantial of a monetary loss.
Man, I think I suck at Undertow. In the second level, on Normal, I already die every time I want to take over one of those checkpoints. Whatever, don't really like it much anyway.

When they've been saying recently that they've got about 10 million people on Live, that's a whole lot of points to give out free. That might not be 10 million individual users, but you can bet they'll all be redeeming those points.
Before I got my 360, sadly. I think there was a brief two- or three-day window where they were giving it out, though I don't remember the exact details.
800 MS points = $10. True MS points have no inherent value, but if say, people used that 800 MS point to buy Rez HD, Microsoft would have to pay Q Entertainment $10 (or $10 minus whatever cut Microsoft gets out of the sale normally) for each purchase. Now keep in mind that there are millions of XBox 360 users. Now throw in the fact that many of them have multiple gamertags and thus would be getting $10 x however many gamertags they have. Also keep in mind that if Microsoft announced that they were giving out 400 MS point to everyone, people would start making additional gamertags like crazy.
No, only giving out 400MS points wouldn't help much; it would still cost Microsoft millions. Now, if they wanted to give out 400MS points, but only give it to Gold subscribers that would be possible (since people couldn't just spam create a million new accounts), but that would still be more expensive than just making a game free for a few days plus it would piss off Silver subscribers.

The thing is, the card randomization sucks so hard. I mean, it is so bad that certain strategys appear if you play long enough. It is not a true 52 card random sort.

Well I disagree about that because even with Silver Customers they were unable to access marketplace or arcade, so it's not like they can't complain to, they have all the rights to,
Gold Members even more so but to say it's pathetic for Silver customers to complain about the live problems, that's nonsense.

Once you step into a pay for service, you expect them to keep up with their service. I would say the saying "beggars can't be choosers" applies here. Microsoft is already very generous towards silver users already.

Ugh... can we please not delve back into the shitstorm that is Gold vs Silver again?
Anyways... there's also an additional benefit for giving away a game rather than points. You can bet Microsoft is discreetly hoping on the fact that most simply don't even know about it. The response I got from my friends on Live when I told them Undertow was free was "Huh? Why?". You know there are a large amount of people who don't follow forums, or the main Xbox site, or whatnot. Every person that doesn't download this game means less revenue lost vs giving everybody points. More proof? Just look at how many people right here are flabbergasted that Uno was free at one point.

Unless of course you are a silver user who purchased content on XBLA then got an RROD and a refurb. In which case without LIVE you can't play any of the games you paid for. I would say that's an issue.
