The thread title sounds like the name of a big cruiser. :P
Whenever Microsoft does have an armada, I hope all their ships are variations on the MS Apology, MS So Sorry, and the MS Commiserate. Nothing like being shelled by the "MS Forgive Us".
It is no match for the (Aperature Science) "AS I Don't Blame You"
I am just curious, what exactly are you Silver Members being compensated for? The service you already don't pay for? I don't want to hear any of this "Well, I bought the HDD..." crap either, because last I checked the XBL outage didn't affect your HDD. You should consider yourselves lucky that you are getting a free game for an interruption in a service you don't even pay for.
If MS decided not to compensate (ha) Silver members, I don't think there would be any grounds for an argument on their behalf, simply because the service they get is free.
I'm also of the opinion that I'm amazed Microsoft is even offering something to anyone for a week or two of outages (I haven't had any Rock Band or CoD4 problems, though I haven't played a whole lot online, either). It's very nice that they're doing so, though.
YES. Microsoft could have told us to fuck off, and done nothing. Instead they are saying sorry and giving anyone with a 360 that is hooked up to the internet a FREE FUCKING GAME.
I just cannot believe people are actually arguing this.
If MS decided not to compensate (ha) Silver members, I don't think there would be any grounds for an argument on their behalf, simply because the service they get is free.
Yes, those were immediateemotional reactions to the factthat Gold members get no more compensation that silver members. I am sure that if those two posters were asked, they would have no issue with everyone getting something, but gold members getting more.
The game costs $6. Really, I think that covers everyone.
So you are saying that the money that I spent on a service I couldn't use has ABSOLUTELY zero value? I should ONLY be compensated for the free section of the service?
What I was actually trying to say, and perhaps I wasn't very clear, was that the $6 value of a Live Arcade game more than covers the $3.75 price that Gold members pay, plus a couple of bucks extra. Silver Members get this for nothing. Everyone has been overcompensated insofar as an apologetic gesture of goodwill is concerned. If you've paid for something and you can't download it, you should obviously get those points back. This should be in addition to the game.
and what I am saying is that Microsoft haschanged the value of the game by giving out for free to silver members. They have set the value of the game at "the inconvience of outages on the free service". That's perfectly fair and fine.
The issue is, while I get compensated for the inconvenience of outages to the free service, I'm still not being compensated for outages to the service that I pay for.
Let's be honest here, people are going to bitch no matter what Microsoft do in response to this issue. At least they're doing something. That's more than most people were honestly expecting.
Consider yourselves lucky - you've had a week of downtime. Me? I'm physically unable to pay for my service because I have immigrated, and the most common response Microsoft have given me is to go back where I came from, because I'm foreign scum.
This reminded me of an article I read one time! http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20030920/fob5.asp
It is about monkeys! And equity, or something.
tl;dr, If you give a monkey a grape and another monkey a cucumber, the cuke monkey will get pissed.
Moral: You are all monkeys. Dance.
So Evander is acting the part of an angry jew monkey? Sweet.
All I want is for the service to work correctly, the fact that I'm getting something for free is just a bonus.
If MS decided not to compensate (ha) Silver members, I don't think there would be any grounds for an argument on their behalf, simply because the service they get is free.
Before anyone starts to try and argue with me, I am not saying MS shouldn't give Silver members a game, just saying that they wouldn't be as deserving as Gold members. If MS decided not to compensate (ha) Silver members, I don't think there would be any grounds for an argument on their behalf, simply because the service they get is free.
Still, you don't think certain Silver members should be upset that they weren't able to access XBLA games not bought on their console? (Especially since a lot of MS customer service people tell end users to do this exact tactic.) Or finish loading and watching a movie they had started to download before the service pooped out and before the 48-hour timer expires? I feel like there are too many special cases for it to be worth MS's hassle to track them all and only pass out stuff to certain people.
huh, I came into this thread expecting positivity. funny, guitar hero comes out in mono for gods sake and people get nothing - two weeks of dodgy live access aint all that much, kudos for the goodwill gesture I say.
If MS decided not to compensate (ha) Silver members, I don't think there would be any grounds for an argument on their behalf, simply because the service they get is free.

I think those are separate issues (DRM); related, but separate. Hopefully, this outtage will draw attention to those issues.
Also, I don't think a game is going to be fair compensation for every person that experienced a loss of a purchase. I think most of those individuals will be contacting MS for a refund of lost purchases regardless of what MS offers.

Speaking of points, I tried to buy points last night to download the Halo Map Pack and it wouldnt let me. Microsoft stopped me from giving them money. Amazing.
EDIT: And whats with that shitty points system anyways? Whats wrong with using good, old fashioned US dollars as a currency? Things listed on the Playstation store have prices like $9.99.... not hard. On the other hand, something on the marketplace costs 800 points... what the fuck is that?
Just speaking for myself but often I'll spend MS points because my brain doesn't register them as being worth as much as say $9.99
I've bought countless XBLA titles because they "only" cost 800 points.
I've passed on many PSN titles because *gasp* omg they cost 9.99 !!!
Objectively I know there isn't a difference. But for some reason when I spend MS Points it feels like I'm spending "play money", whereas when I buy PSN titles it hurts more because I'm using my credit card right there on the spot.
So you're saying its all a diabolical plot by MS to get its users to spend their hard earned cash like it was monopoly money?
I know what youre saying... I went to many foreign countries when I was in the Navy and when I used to exchange US dollars for their currency it felt like I wasnt even spending my money... espeically when most other countries have colorful, goofy looking paper money.
I think its less diabolical and more simply understanding the psychology of the buyer. $ = $ and everything else adds an extras step of thinking to making that conversion, removing the buyer from loss of money.
Maybe they should give you the option of either the XBLA game or the startling $1.96 that gold members "lost" over two weeks by not having access to live.
For the people in here saying that Silver members should expect nothing because they aren't paying, and also saying the same thing regarding the Wii and PS3 services, that is a load of bull. When you buy a Wii/PS3/360 you are buying it under the assumption that the online service will work. It is one of the advertised features of the console that you are purchasing, it's part of the deal. You have already paid for the service, in part, from the $250-$500 you paid for the console. You certainly have a right to be angry when the service doesn't work whether you're paying an additional $50/year or not.
And when you buy a copy of Mario Strikers Charged it says on the box that you can play it online. You are paying $50 for the game with the understanding you will be able to play it online. If that advertised feature doesn't work, you should be mad. It's not a bonus, it's what you paid for in the first place.
That whole argument is, of course, separate from saying that Gold members deserve more than Silver members, but it still needs to be addressed.
What's with all the hate? Microsoft messed up which resulted in problems for everyone who has their XBox 360 hooked up online. They don't have to do anything to make amends (I'm sure there's some sort of stipulation that says they're unaccountable for server problems in the legalese you agree to when you sign up for a Live membership), but they're going to give a free XBLA game to everyone anyway to try to please people. And now, instead of "Hey! Cool! Free stuff!" people are complaining because everybody gets the freebie? Bleh, sometimes I just don't understand people.
Evander is acting the part of an angry jew monkey?

I certainly hope its an awesome game, as I didnt experience any problems with Live and this is purely a free game for me. (I have a gold subscription BTW grumble grumble paying for online etc)
Now if the PSN network went down for an extended amount of time, I wouldnt mind some compensation despite the fact that no one pays for that directly. I did pay for the console and the PSN is part of the services included in the price of the console. Same thing with VC for the Wii and Silver for the 360.

PS3: MistaCreepy::Steam: MistaCreepy::360: Dead and I don't feel like paying to fix it.
Silver members don't deserve jack. I pay a monthly fee for my service, and because it didn't work I get compensated for it. You (the Silver member), on the other hand, don't pay a monthly fee, so you shouldn't get anything.
I love how when a large group of people are affected by something, Microsoft are quick to try and smooth it over. But when it's one individual with their insignificant problem...
Sorry. I'm quite pissed off about my particular Live gripe.
Not that I'm complaining about free stuff, but I hope it isn't like the past few games that were free, where I'd already paid for them. If it's meant as an apology giving away something I've already paid for and basically telling me tough shit isn't very effective.
For the people in here saying that Silver members should expect nothing because they aren't paying, and also saying the same thing regarding the Wii and PS3 services, that is a load of bull. Granted, but you also have to take into effect that I'm certain there are agreements when you go online that state that you are not guaranteed service. What about all the old games that have had online components over the years that are now defunct because the main servers have been taken offline? Are those companies legally responsible to the customers because they are no longer providing the service? No.
However, if I'm paying for service from WoW or something, and there is an outage, I should get refunded or compensated for the time service was out.
I guess I'm saying, it's possible that silver members were effected during this outtage because they also may have purchased things they could not access online due to the outtage. So MS is taking that into account and compensating them as well. They don't want to do the work of figuring out WHO was effected, so they are just giving everyone something.

Damn the Steam demo for only working for an hour. It's a great game. Not $20 great, but it's great.
I'd pay $5-10...
For my wife, it was $20 great.
As was Zuma, Insaniquarium, Bejeweled, and a few other popcap games.. Oi.. She even wore out my ipod select button playing Zuma on the iPod (family member purchased it).

You might be being sarcastic, I don't know because I haven't been following you, but silver members still do pay, just not monthly, and just not specifically and directly. The benefits of silver membership sells games and consoles, and therefore generates revenue, the same way that ads do--as opposed to being magical money sinks.
Now wheres the free shit for my Xbox 360 repair taking forever? I sent it in 11/13, just got off the phone with MS Support again, and for some reason their computer listed it as of 12/25 that the service center was awaiting my console still despite having a tracking number saying it was signed for on 11/16.... I was told the same thing I was told on the 24th, that they are still awaiting a status update from the Service Center and to call back.... Fucking hell. Its a good thing I'm not paying for gold right now, otherwise I'd be really bitching at them. Mine actually expired the day my 360 died so at least it was good timing on that.

When you give a monkey a cucumber it will be glad for it. If you give it a cucumber and give another monkey something better the first monkey will be pissed. This is like how this thread was about 'neat an xbox game, is that really good enough' but when it was discovered that the inferior silver members were getting the same thing, it became 'this xbox game is an OUTRAGE'.
I..I was just glad for having a reason to post the monkey article.
No one is opposed to the Silver Members getting something.
They are just opposed to them getting the same thing as Gold members.
I can guarantee there'd be thousands of Gold members who didn't even touch their machine over the holiday period - and plenty or Silver members who relied on their account MORE than them over that same time.
How awesome is it that I've just been playing Mass Effect and TF2 on Steam during the holidays, so this hasn't really affected me but will net me a Live game?
See? Why should he get one? He wasn't put out. Arguing over magnitude of entitlement is rather retarded, as being Gold/Silver is no real indication of who was inconvenienced most, so a single compensation for all members is by far the simplest and most fair approach.
