#1. So Steam has Achievements - but they're different from Microsoft's/Xbox 360's, correct?
That is, they're only in games they put them in, even if there are achievements in Orange Box for the 360, that doesn't mean they're in the Orange Box for the PC through Steam, or even if they WERE they wouldnt be the same ones. Moreover, there would be no connection to your Gamertag/Gamerscore.
#2. Games for Windows games. Which of these have achievements? And are they shared with console versions of the same games?
Gears of War is an example. Does the game have to support LIVE on the PC to have achievements? Are they connected to your Gamertag/Gamerscore?
It's confusing.

Steam doesn't have achievements. Only Orange Box does. And they aren't different from 360 achievements, you just don't have a gamerscore.
No idea about GfW, though.

(my TF2 stats and achievements)
No clue about GFW.
In every other area PC Live is half-assed, so it doesn't shock me that achievements are the same way.
Steam does too have achievements.

Are you telling me all those medic achievements are the same as ones already in TF2 for 360? I find that hard to believe when there are only 99 achievements for all of the Orange Box for 360 and the majority of those are focused on HL2
edit: there are only 17 TF2 achievements for 360. http://www.xbox360achievements.org/achievements.php?gameID=308
And what of achievements for game not on the 360 like Counter Strike Source that is announced there?
So to me the Steam achievements system appears to be wholly separate from the MSFT/360 achievement system. Or at best, some achievements are shared with 360 releases, but there are many more others the 360 does not have, and moreover there is no connection to Gamertag/Gamerscore.
#2. All the games on xbox360acheivements.org under the PC catergory are Games for Windows that also support Live (makes sense).
Although I can think of 2 GfW Live titles that are not there - Shadowrun and Universe at War. Does anyone know if those games support MSFT achievements?
Valve takes years to do everything. EVERYTHING.
I'm fairly sure shadowrun PC does have achievements. I don't know about UaW.
That is to say that they aren't actually different, but you can earn them again with the same gamertag to increase your gamerscore another 1000 points. So the same achievements can be had twice if you buy both versions of the game.
There really is no relationship between Steam and XBL as far as achievements go. They probably have some of the same ones, but there is no Steam equivalent to a gamerscore. Probably because no one who plays PC games over 360 games really gives a shit.
I think the whole thing is pretty stupid, but some people enjoy it so meh.
edit: apparently for Shadowrun - because its the same list of achievements as the 360 version or something. I'm guessing this means if you get them done on the 360 you cant get them again (or they won't be worth anything) if you try to do them on PC
Not sure about why U@W isn't there. It's not even out for 360 yet.
Hmm, Universe at War has achievements? Fascinating. That may have just bumped up my interest in that game, as I enjoyed Empire at War. Hmm.
I'm a total sucker for achievement points.
And yes, basically Steam has its own system and Microsoft has their own system. The Windows/Xbox360 achievements can all be tied to the same Gamertag, since one subscription works for both services.

That's not Steam as a whole, that's Orange Box. No other games actually have it on Steam. If they're gonna add some to CS: Source, fine. I doubt non-Valve games are ever going to have them.
and NOT 360's
So any discussion of Steam being able to do achievements is very relevant to the conversation - which is entirely about (in case you missed the title) achievements for games on non-360 platforms
namely Games for Windows (Live), and Steam
Steam has achievements. Not the achievements exactly as we know them from Microsoft (as I discovered without your help), but it has them all the same.
Dude, what on earth are you talking about? I never said Steam wasn't able to do achievements, I said only Orange Box had them. Of course, if your definition of "STEAM HAS ACHIEVEMENTS" is that they're contained within 3 games that can only played on Steam, then yes, Steam has goddamn achievements. That's still an overarching generalization - don't be a semantics whore; the vast majority of Steam games do not and will not have achievements.
Also, the ones for Portal, Ep 2 and TF2 are the exact same ones that are on the 360. You do not get gamerpoints, however, and Valve have continued to add new ones after OB's release.
Because any logical person would decide that,
if service X offers game Y,
and game Y has achievements,
then fucking X has achievements.
Where X is Steam in this case and Y is the Orange Box.
Not to mention the other games ON STEAM (BESIDES THE ORANGE BOX) that will have achievements.
"And they aren't different from 360 achievements"
Yet I already provided proof of achievements for TF2 that the 360 does not have. Thus "achievements" as we know them on Orange Box steam are NOT exactly the same as the ones on 360, or in other words, they are different.
So you said 2 things that were very wrong, and your dogged persistence in not admitting as much but instead going after me makes you a douchebag.
God's sake, dude, I'm not going after you. If you told someone "yeah, Steam has achievements", wouldn't that person logically assume every game on there had achievements? You're not getting what I'm saying. It's not Steam itself that has achievements, it's Orange Box. It introduced achievements to Steam, and so far it's the only game that has them. That's all I'm saying. Achievements on Steam are the exception, not the rule, even after they add them to CS: Source. How is that illogical or wrong?
The new TF 2 achievements were added post-release - on release they were identical to the 360 version. I had forgotten they added them.
I totally forgot about that. I don't think there's any way to see the achievements of others, making the points for getting them even more pointless. I like how most of the achievements don't show up until you've made some progression on them.
