I've been living with a roommate for about 8 months now and the time has finally come for me to move out. I notified him and told him I would pay him rent through two months after I moved out just to help him out.
He is a little on the cranky side though and the only way I can get my name taken off the lease is if he signs a paper agreeing to do so.
I'm worried that he may not do it (I'm not sure though), but if I am no longer a resident of the apartment and my name is on the lease of another property (a house) do I have any legal advantage or rights to have my name removed from his lease?
My concern is that, because he is a slacker, he's just going to either be ridiculously late with rent or simply stop paying it and get evicted. I don't want that on my credit, so I want my name off the lease.
You signed the lease, you are bound to its terms. You can't get out just because you want to. You need the agreement of both the landlord and your roommate to get out. Which probably won't happen. You are going to have to either find another person to move in and take over your spot in the apartment that both the roommate and landlord can agree to, or you are going to have to pay the rest of the rent, all of it.
Just because you signed a new lease doesn't get you out of the old one. You agreed to pay the rent for a year, so you have to pay it.
What dead said. I've had a few landlords, and even the really nice ones - as people - didn't really give a shit that I'd found someplace else to live; you signed an agreement to stay there and pay rent for a time period, and changing your mind for any reason doesn't matter legally. (Not even death, according to my last lease. Srs.) Find a subleaser and cut your losses.

Why aren't you finding a replacement flatmate for him? That's your obligation as a co-tenant. He should get to pick from the shortlist, but you have to do the legwork.
