Age of Conan-Hyborion Adventures, new MMO for PC and 360

Main Site.

I just found out about this game today, and it looks interesting. It seems to be under the radar in this forum, no one is really talking about it. Unlike APB which no one knows when it's coming out, this game has a solid release date is already in beta. The release date is March 25th for the PC and later on in 08 for the 360.

Here are some bullet points from the main site.

* Enter the true Conan experience – The first official Conan online RPG sends you on a brutal journey in the footsteps of the worlds' greatest fantasy hero. Meet Conan's friend and foes, battle demons and monsters known from 70 year of Conan history, and step up to the ultimate challenge and befriend the mighty king Conan himself.

* Explore the world of Conan – Enter a gigantic and unique gameworld containing more than 30 distinct regions spread across the three mighty nations of Aquilonia, Cimmeria and Stygia. Explore deep jungles, burning deserts, inhospitable mountains, vast valleys, dark dungeons or gleaming cities, and take part in an incredible journey of exploration and adventure.

* Real Combat Engine – Experience Funcom's revolutionary Real Combat engine, and fight mounted or on the ground. A new multi-point melee system allows the players to swing their weapons where they direct it, in real-time, going head-on against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat. The Real Combat engine also allow players to team up in battle formations and command both NPC's and other players in epic multiplayer battles, as well as giving you the chance to participate in massive sieges.

* Single-player vs. massively multiplayer – Emerge as a hero from the story-driven single-player experience and embark into even greater adventures in the massively multiplayer part of the game. The branching single-player story is created by the award-winning writers behind The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Anarchy Online so expect something extraordinary.

* PvP and PvE – Meet the ultimate resistance in human opponents, and enjoy crushing the skulls of fellow players in mini-games, sieges, arena fights and drunken brawls. Charge into the world of Conan, and fight monsters and demons alone or in groups.

* Extensive guild and solo gameplay – Form guilds in the multiplayer game and lay siege to hostile castles. Let the catapults sing their merry song of death as the enemy is brutally crushed to a pulp. Team up with other players in large guilds, and explore a large range of social gameplay opportunities. 'Conan' also offers extensive solo gaming opportunities, taking you through an amazing single-player journey and deep into the lands of Hyboria.

* Varied gameplay – Besides bringing the most brutal experience ever seen in a MMO, Conan also promises to deliver what all fans of MMOs love and enjoy. Vast character customization opportunities, a deep character creation, lots of social opportunities, crafting, a deep and fun RPG system, exciting classes and player-made cities are but a few ingredients in this powerful RPG.

* Amazing graphics – 'Conan' takes graphics in MMOs to a new level! With the latest and greatest in technology and an amazing art direction the graphics in 'Conan' immerses you into a world as never before seen in any online fantasy universe.

* Stunning Sounds – Listen to a powerful and epic soundtrack in 7.1 surround. Hear gripping voices recorded by professional actors, and enjoy a dynamic soundscape bringing players to the edge of their seats.

* A story to die for – 'Age of Conan' delivers a brutal, mature and compelling storyline that will send you headlong on a journey of brutality, intrigue and depth. Mixing the finest of storytelling found in classic RPG's with the open-ended approach found in MMOs, 'Conan' delivers a rare and special story experience.

* The first mature MMO – In the true and barbaric vision of Robert E. Howard, 'Age of Conan' promises to bring mature online players something dark, new and refreshing. This is no cartoony fairytale, 'Conan' is made by grown-ups, for grown-ups, giving online gamers the chance to unleash the ultimate havoc and fury.

Here's a quote from wikipedia.
Hyborian Adventures is the first installment in the planned Age of Conan series that will include expansion packs hinted at on the official forums. The Age of Conan series is set in the Hyborian Age, a fantasy setting created by Robert E. Howard in 1932. Age of Conan itself takes place within the continent of the Hyborian kingdoms, a year after the events depicted in Howard's sole Conan novel, The Hour of the Dragon.[13] Hyborian Adventures' release will celebrate the 76th anniversary of the Conan franchise.

Looks pretty fun, you can build your own cities and siege them and stuff. There are PvE servers where you can level up without being ganked but if you want to fight for your life and all that good stuff there are PvP and RP servers. Also there is PvP on PvE servers, it's just consensual. You just have to fight in areas that are akin to WoW's battlegrounds.

Funcom have the most inappropriate name ever. They're pretty much the only thing standing between me and this game. Anarchy Online is absolute death, and the gameplay videos for this have done little to interest me. The combat system doesn't really look like it's a whole lot of fun.

Still, I love Conan, and I won't dismiss it outright. But I am not optimistic.

It was kind of old, and it only reached 5 pages. I felt that I should start a new one, where more people will likely see it, and there could be more discussion.

I thought you could post about any game, mmo or otherwise, in the regular games and technology forum. If I'm wrong though, the mods can move it.

Will the 360 version have a monthly fee? If so that will be a bit wank. If not, theres potential there.

They aren't going to let you play an MMO for free. Of course it will have a fee, and how is it anymore "wank" than charging a fee for the PC version?

I'd give it a try, on Live, for extra. 15 bucks is worth a good persistent world, to me.

    Needs more codpieces though.

I'm more interested to see what Funcom's learned from AO and the subsequent seven or eight years.

That suggests they haven't learned much.

I think the release will either be an absolute disaster, or there will be so little content in the game that only an act of god could fuck it up.

Your Live subscription costs $60 a year. A typical MMO costs ~$15 a month. Also $0 of your live subscription would go to Funcom. So no, you would have no reason to resent having to pay for an MMO when every good MMO ever has charged a sub fee.

If memory serves, you don't need Live! to play MMOs on the 360.

Personally, I think all the MMOs coming out up till Guild Wars 2 are going to be disasters for the companies making them. Although wasn't this the game where a large portion of it was going to be a single player? Even still though, Edge had a preview on Age of Conan and they basically said the combat was a bit wank, which isn't exactly getting my hopes up.

The game was supposed to be out in October, but they pushed it back to this coming March because testers thought the combat wasn't fun. Now, apparently, it is.

The intro section is single player. It's supposed to be a few hours long. Sorta like pre-searing Guild Wars I'm guessing (it wasn't technically single player, but generally you didn't bother grouping to get through it).

They said they revamped the combat system before they started beta. If that made it all that much better who knows. I like the idea of a more action oriented combat system, but when you watch the videos it certainly doesn't look terribly exciting.

I'm cautiously optimistic like others have said if only because it's a Conan MMO, but it's going to make it all the more sad if it blows.

Wow, this actually interests me, a more human-looking fantasy MMORPG than WoW... even if the name sounds too much like "Age of Conan O'Brien Adventures".

I do have to say though, yeah, FunCom's track record is rather spotty. Longest Journey and Dreamfall were excellent, but other stuff they've done has been rather blah.

i think there's something people to need understand about this.

this game was suppose to be released in december, if i recall correctly.

however, one of the lead developers stepped up and told the community that basically, the combat system sucked ass and he was very disappointed with it, so they decided to completely revamp it into something way better. this caused a delay of the game.

but the fact that the developers stepped up and said that their combat system was terrible shows me that they're serious about making a decent game, instead of releasing a broken piece of shit.

edit: oops, beated by an above post, but the actual point of my post still stands.

IIRC the Devs said the first part of the game should take the average person (whatever that means) about 9-10 hours. Also while it is single player you can "rest" at an inn and it will switch you to multiplayer mode allowing you to group up with others to finish the beginning portion (lvl 1-20), but you don't have to.

Plus there are all kinds of mounts in the game. Mounts like donkeys, horses, bears, rhinos, and mother fucking mammoths! Each mount has their own ability. Mammoths can be use to knock down an enemy city's walls, while rhinos can charge through enemy formations, bears can tear people up, and horses are fast and agile, not sure what donkeys can do.

They also have a mercenary system. If you are attacking a city and need more men you can send out a call for mercenaries (other players) and pay them to fight for you. Of course you can do the same if you are defending.

I'm almost wishing it didn't have any type of serverwide text chat. I don't want to see this in the game:

I could be wrong, but from the sound of it it isn't a global chat thing. Its just the guild leader opening up a "merc menu", clicking the "Call Mercs" button or what have you, then other players getting an update saying, "Wang Brigade hiring mercs" and then you would open up your "merc menu" and click accept. You are then teleported to the fight.

My buzz for this game went down once I heard it was going to be censored ala The Witcher. I'm sorry but if your going to do a Conan game and call it a mature game then give us the full experience instead of backpadeling out of fear that the politicians will stone you.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for seeing this game on the 360 any time soon. They are currently shooting for an April release on the PC and, if they don't want to end up as another Vanguard, are likely to push it back to the fall (or later) again. On top of all that, they've said that development on the 360 version won't start till the PC version is done.

I expect that they will keep talking about an April release date right till the last minute, just like they did before last October's delay. Back then they insisted it was coming out in October no matter what, even though beta testing had just barely begun.

The cost is likely to be the same as most every other MMO out there - $15.

And as far as censorship goes, I'd heard that it was going to be an IP-based thing. If you're playing from Europe, you get tits. If you're in the US, you... well... don't.

To my knowledge, they are only censoring it in regards to national laws. Specifically, they're not allowed to show decapitations in Germany, so they took that out for them. I wouldn't worry about censorship in the US version.

I'll be interested to see what happens w/ the 360 version. The game itself sounds pretty good, and if I were still a PC gamer I'd probably try it out, but as I've gone exclusively 360 it'll have to draw me in on that version. I do really hope that the MMO genre successfully ports itself to consoles...then my journey to the dark side will be complete.
