The problem is that my ping is too high when trying to connect to servers in COD4. I'm using a university connection in residence (in Ontario), and even though the speed isn't amazing, I get pings of 30-70 in TF2, but 250-700 in COD4. This makes it very difficult to connect to servers, and once on one, play without jitters.
Now, I don't know a whole lot about ports and what not, but am I right in saying that opening/altering ports in the game could help fix this problem? If so, how can I go about doing this? Normally I would just go to the options menu and do this, but there's no option. Also, what would I change the port/s to? It should be noted that I'm not using a router, and I'm using Vista (I don't know if that's important).
The problem is that there's no option to change ports in COD. Normally, in other games, you would just go to Multiplayer Options or whatever and put a new number for "Ports", but nothing like that exists in COD.

Maybe you could change it to that port.
But then, would it cause issues for you trying to connect to servers?

In the target line add +set net_port <port here> (i.e. 28961)
