but i recall a thread of someone doing this exact same thing, and ended up reporting it to the police, and the police said it was stolen property or something along those lines. I really dont remember but that is very much the same exact thread....
I've had something similar happen to me, and seen it happen to someone else....
I was walking over to Chik-fil-a to get some chicken for lunch oneday and someone in an SUV pulled up near me and told me they'd won a surround sound system from their workplace, but already had one they didn't want to replace, so they were trying to offload, and asked if I wanted it.... I looked at them with an idiot look on my face since I was in fact WALKING to lunch, and let them know I didn't have a car... They let me know that they had an invoice and that everything was indeed legit, and that they would give me a ride home to drop it off... I continued to say no and they asked if Circuit City would take it (I was on lunch break and work for Circuit City, so I was in uniform) I chuckled a little and said no we wouldn't give em' credit for it... (Probably trying to sound remotely credible...)...
Anyways, by some odd coincedence I was later walking away from a Chinese food place when I walked by someone else who was being approched by what I believe were the same people.... After that person said no, they drove off... I let that by standard know it happened to me as well, and that it was probably a scam....
The two incidences were about 2 to 4 months apart.... Struck me as odd....

Makes sense... just makes me wonder why they would GIVE it away rather than sell it somewhere...
The next step in the exchange of good swould technically be to drive over to your place and drop it off there... In theory they could rob you....
Could be a cruel, yet mildly entertaining way of off loading boxes of garbage...
Could infact NOT be high quality gear....
Could be alot of things really.... Google around a bit, I'm sure somewhere is a site explaining it....
yeah, ive heard of what thanatos is saying....and thats what i thought at first, but when they say theyre going to GIVE it to you, i dont know....why start off saying "im going to give it to you" then get a reply of "ok!" only to have them say "uhh, actually, 400 dollars for it"....
Ha, the speaker guys. Used to see them all the time outside the building I lived in at university. I had a guy try to sell me "Samaurai" brand speakers. I had fun wasting his time. It's totally a scam. Even if they say it's free, they'll find a way to "remember" that they need X dollars for Y reason. The speakers are going to be worth a lot less than X dollars.
I've had this happen to me a few times at my college.
1. probably stolen property or its linked to a crime.
2. a bait and switch scam where the person tells you
its free but then the agreement changes.
desperation is a good flag especially if they offer to drive you somewhere; that opens up a whole can of potential offenses they could do to you.
A mistake I learned early is to not be rude, just say no thanks and walk off.
A man in a car drove up to me asking me if I wanted some car radio/entertainment equipment and I told him to fuck off, on account it reminded me of my recently robbed brothers situation at the time.
Luckily my 4 friends were waiting for me and jumped out of my car as he jumped out of his. that could of been bad. lucky he didn't have a weapon or anything.

You say this, but they tend to always be wanting to GIVE the equipment away.... This does not say much for the quality of the equipment inside....
