SO yeah, Valve has just released a version of Portal (Not a demo, apparently) called "First Slice". It's up from grabs from the Steam site now. The catch is, you have to have a NVidia graphix card.
I dunno what the difference is between this and the whole game, but I imagine some puzzles are left out.
Here's the site.

I've been trying to get this to run for me through Steam, but once I okay the download nothing happens. Any ideas?

    It's awesome and lame at the same time.

    Portal is awesome.

    Needing to have a specific video card is lame.

    Okay, what exactly is this game? I'm at school on the macbook so I can't actaully test this out just yet. But is it the same game? New levels?

    I've searched everywhere and no one seems to have actually played this yet.

    So? Anyone knows how much of a demo this is? Want to know if it's worth the bother of initiating an indoctrination.

    Though it has Peggle Extreme too, and that's an amazing bonus.

    YES! I don't own Portal and this is quite awesome! Now to see how well my laptop runs it! :D

    Peggle too? I love it!

    HL2 stuff? eh, I'll try it.

    Huh? Just tried it on my machine. Said the same thing and I didn't get the Portal Demo. I already have everything in the package though, but in theory Steam would point that out instead of the current dialogue.

    Only I use Steam and I'm the only one who uses this machine.

    Someone noted in Evil Avatar that First Slice only includes the first four levels so don't be too excited.

    Hmm, obviously this 9600XT that valve encouraged me to get isn't all that great these days.

    I can't seem to get Steam to realize I'm downloading this.
    I click the thing, it downloads, I try to open it with Steam...nothing.
    Whatttt?

    Also, is HL2: DM good? I can always play more online games.

    Edit: Go it going, had to close Steam and then open it again.

    It's OK. It's fun being able to launch grenades as soon as you spawn with the grav gun. Be prepared to find servers with gigantic map rotations and each map weirder than the last.

    Though, if it's anything like the ATi offer, it won't let you mod it. And some mods are damn fun.

    It's actually HL2 Maps in Portal, so yeah, so long as it has the portal gun it'll work.

    If you really really want it it might be possible if you uninstall your radeon drivers, pull out the card and then go install drivers for your onboard card, then go get the coupon. Lots of effort for something that might not work though.

    I'm sure it would work if you just disabled the PCI-X slot the ATI card is connected to...

    yeah, but would it be limited to the demo time, I wonder. this is all talk, anyway. my Geforce 4 chokes on HL2 at the lowest of low settings.

    but I have the orange box on the xbox360 if I want to play through the games normally. I keep my free PC versions (yay Orange Box gifting) specifically for mod shenanigans like this.

    Here's another question...

    I have two PCs. One has a geforce 4, and I'm downloading the pack on that. Will I be able to also download them onto my main PC with a Radeon card later? I know Steam lets you re-download games on your account, right?

    Yeah, it's tied to your account. Did the same thing with the ATi offer with my brother's macbook. It just needs to be activated on your account and then it stays there.

    after downloading the games, it gave me a message to the effect of, "you can play these games on any PC using this steam account". although I'm pretty sure that's just a standard Steam message, I don't think there are any additional restrictions just because this is a hardware-specific deal.

    Hahaha! I started the download on my spare PC that has a GeForce 4, stopped it and continued on my gaming PC with a Radeon. I launched Portal, went to display settings, and it says "Best Experienced with ATI." Note that you have to have a nVidia card to download the game. Hilarious.

    Hmmm, I wonder if First Slice will be able to run some of the released Portal mods and custom maps. Sounds like this demo doesn't even get into the meat of the gameplay so I'd much rather play some maps that actually use the portal gun.
    Still haven't played PA's GOTY so this will be my first time playing!

    I've been trying to download the Half Life 2: Lost Coast thing all night, but it keeps telling me that Steam's servers are too busy. Everything else I download works right away.
