The story.
TL;DR
Microsoft has looked at the progress they have made and has decided, "That's good" once again (We remember what happened last time they said that). They might do another update, but they think the latest update will probably be the last.
I think they have done a fairly admirable job, but I hardly agree with the rep when he states they have basically gotten all the big games that people are interested in. There are still quite a few HUGE titles that haven't been touched or badly emulated ones that haven't been fixed.
Opinions?
Also feel free to list your collection of non compatible titles that you've been waiting on that might never grace your 360 now..
Here's mine;
Area 51
Oddworld: Strangers Wrath
Tron 2.0 Killer App
Project Snowblind
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
The Suffering: Ties That Bind
Otagi 2
That's ten titles I've been waiting on, not one of them was a small title. Some of them I've purchased after getting my 360 on the promise that they would most likely be supported at one point, several of them are still in the original shrinkwrap, and a couple of those I just got recently... What are yours?

They didn't say that "last time". It was a rumor spread by some insecure fans based on an offhand comment that they were "satisfied with the level backwards compatibility" and blown out of proportion by the rest of the community.
As for my opinion? They've more than fulfilled their promise, and I've been consistently I do *wish* they'd continue, but I understand if they don't. Yes, there are still a few important games left off the list, but for the most part, it's there, and working fine.
My list of what I'd still like to see personally, given that they still do another update or two:
- Beyond Good & Evil
- Rallisport Challenge 2
...and that's pretty much it.* Framerate tweaks would be hugely appreciated though.
Also, for those that have it, was Half-Life 2 ever fixed? I seem to remember that game had a huge emulation problem that would leave you stuck halfway through the game.
*Ok, this list subject to grow as this thread does, and someone mentions something stupidly obvious that I missed.

Because Starbreeze is remaking it for 360. It doesn't excuse it, but it's the sad truth I'm afraid.
Also, I'd like to see the second Kingdom Under Fire title go BC, since they got the first one working.
EDIT: Spaniard, you've foiled me again! I admit defeat.
This time!

With sales on 360 games being so high, I'm not surprised to see that backward compatibility updates are losing steam pretty quickly. The best bet for playing all of the games on the "Man this game should totally be on BC list" is an actual Xbox. You lose out on fullscreen AA / automatic 720p and forced custom soundtracks on games that don't support it, but you get 100% compatibility... and if you ever get bored you can mod the shit out of the thing.

And hey, both the 360 and PS3 now have differing degrees of patchy BC, so they're even again.
Seriously. My modded 360 is the greatest media extender I have ever had. It has now clocked more hours modded than playing games - and it played a lot of games back in the day. Better than a 360, better than PS3 and better than Consumer Electronics extenders.

I honestly think for 90% of the games listed the best bet is probably a PC. Even 3-5 year old PCs shouldn't have any problems with most of the games listed.
My original Xbox died shortly after they stopped producing them, and I'll be damned if I'm going to buy a new original Xbox just to play a handful of games they haven't gotten around to making backwards compatible. Hell, I never even got a chance to play Prince of Persia 3 so it's been sitting on my shelf collecting dust the entire time I've had it.
Hence, the Games for Less purchase of the brand new in box Halo Edition oXbox, as a back up. I wonder what the shelf life of the consoles are now a days?
LIZ: Different.
VOICE-OVER: It's September 24th, I'm Liz Parker and five days ago I died. But then the really amazing thing happened. I came to life.
Other big titles I really want are:
Beyond Good and Evil
Enter the Matrix
James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
SSX: On Tour
The Matrix: Path of Neo
Tiger Wood's PGA Tour 2003
The ones I have, that I can live without being on the list:
Driv3r
NBA live 2003
NHL 2003
LA Rush
MX Superfly
Pac Man world 2
KUNG-FU CHAOS???
I must have some hot Ninja Fu-Hiya / Monkey action.
seriously?
1. Excellent
2. Exclusive
3. Likely to age well in the future.
The single-player is nearly unplayable later in the game because of a visual bug that obscures most of the screen with a nearly opaque greyish-brown "film." At times I barely had 1/10th of the screen fully visible. And of course, as Fyre mentioned, a pretty nasty MP bug too.
I had this problem on the oXbox too.
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
That alone made me forget the games I wanted BC'd.
Aw shit, don't tell me this. As a guy with only moderate interest in Halo, I was waiting for Halo 3 to come out so Halo 2 would finally drop in price.
Is there anything that can be done to get around that bug?
Nope. Even after restarting the console, the bug would reappear as soon as some sort of lighting effect occurred (usually a grenade would start it). This being a Halo game, that generally takes about 5 seconds. I should point out that I did manage to get through it, but about half the game was played with varying amounts of obscured vision. The early sections were fine, the later sections were awful.

Hey.. a satisfied customer then!
Truthfully that game barely played on the OXbox, I can't imagine the unplayability and bugs it would have on the 360. I really just included it, because I wanted to finish it, and wouldn't mind if Path of Neo was BC as well.
I would have sworn Path of Neo was BC now, with the last update.
Edit: Nope. I was apparently imagining things.
And I thought I was the only one. That is the only oXbox exclusive game I like.
Hey Microsoft, you like money, yes? Fixplskthx
Yeah, I really really want to play that game, and don't fancy picking up an entire oxbox for it.
i you pickles. Where else can you fight on the decks of the Titanic, avoid getting eaten by dinosaurs, and probe aliens with fist of fury all in one game?
I liked it. I played the PS2 version, but it was a fun shooter with some cool gameplay mechanics once you learned a few different abilities. Think of it as Diet Deus Ex and you shouldn't be disappointed, because that's pretty much what it is.
One thing I think everyone should know while they're bitching about BC is that it's not exactly a cakewalk getting an Xbox game up and running on a 360. You can not use any of Nvidia's proprietary software or trade methods, which makes emulation pretty fucking difficult for certain games. This is why some games (even though they are really awesome and the community really wants them to be BC) aren't BC, while Barbie Horse Adventures is.
It's also the reason why certain games might be BC (Jet Set Radio standalone disc), whereas the exact same game in a different distribution might not be (Jet Set Radio/Sega GT combo disc).
Game like Halo 2 utilized the Xbox hardware (especially the GPU) in ways that few other Xbox game did, the fact that it's up and running in general is pretty commendable.
Remember that when you're whining about how your favorite obscure game (or even your favorite big budget AAA title) isn't BC.

Yeah, the article said Microsoft had run out of emulation updates that would get multiple games running at once, so the work in getting the remaining third of the library working is a lot tougher.
Except that it is compatible now.

Well, in his defense, that used to be the case. Also, he didn't say it was still an issue now, he was just using it as an example.
