I searched and see there hasn't been a real Mercs 2 thread, or if there has be one it's too old. So I decided to start a discussion on one of my most anticipated games of 2008. The game is coming out on the 360, PS2, PS3, and PC.
Main WebsiteWhat is it
Mercenaries 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed game Mercenaries: Playground of destruction, which tooks place in Korea. Mercs 1 was a freeroaming game where you roamed an open world doing missions for factions trying to catch North Korean commanders and blowing stuff up. Each of the four factions gave you missions, which ranged from blowing up buildings to rescuing down pilots. There was a faction meter which showed how happy each faction was with you. It changed as you completed missions and killed enemy troops. It went down as you killed friendly troops.
In mercenaries 2:
The story follows the player's hunt for Ramon Solano, a druglord who contracted the player's mercenary for a job but did not pay, and then attempted to kill them. Following a coup, he is the dictator of Venezuela, seizing control of the country's oil supply, resulting in an international incident. Alongside Solano's Rebel Forces, a large portion of the army of Venezuela fiercely supports the dictator's cause. The rebel forces in opposition to Solano have risen under the name of the PLAV, the People's Liberation Army of Venezuela. A number of other factions will soon join in the fight for control of the oil, including the massive Universal Petroleum corporation and its private military, the Rastafarian Pirates (an equivalent of the Russian Mafia from the first Mercenaries game), China, and the AN (Allied Nations-a less controversial mimic of the UN). These six forces will inevitably become the backbone of a war.
Features
Features new to Mercenaries 2 include completely destructible environments (powered by the Havok 4.5 physics engine), a state-of-the-art fire engine (the player may use a Zippo lighter to ignite such things as oil or foliage), advanced artificial intelligence for non-player characters (which take cover and use tactics against the player) and the ability to swim. Many new vehicles have been added such as planes, helicopters (the second of which players can hijack using their new grappling hook) and boats. Hijacking now consists of a small minigame, ranking in difficulty relative to the vehicle being hijacked: a successful hijack on a helicopter will involve grappling onto the chopper, pulling up to the door, pulling the pilot into the door and smashing the door onto him, throwing the pilot out of the helicopter (to his death) and getting inside; if a player misses, there is a recovery button to prevent the character falling to his/her death instead. Another new addition to this iteration of Mercenaries is the ability to build a Private Military Company and recruit mercenaries into it. There have been two recruitable mercenaries confirmed: Eva Navarro and Ewan. There has also been a confirmed helicopter pilot recruit, who can pick up valuable objects you may encounter, and can also extract you if necessary. Another innovation is the ability to switch from driver to gunner on demand. There is also co-operative online and split screen modes available.
The game will feature many new environments ranging from massive, densely-packed urban environments such as Caracas, to the sprawling expanse of the Amazon jungle, including Angel Falls. It will also feature the cities and regions of Maracaibo, Cumaná, Mérida, Ciudad Guayana, Guanare, the Orinoco River, Lake Maracaibo, the Northern Andes, Isla de Margarita, and more.
Expect the same free roaming action from the first game, and ability to blow up anything you want anytime, including trees! (In Mercs 1 trees were indestructable) One thing about the co-op though, there will be a tether. You won't be able to run on an opposite side of the map away from your teammate.
Characters:
Mattias Nelson.
Mattias is a crazy merc from Sweden. He cares only about destruction and nothing else. He'll take down anyone who gets in his way.
Jennifer Mui.
Jennifer, who's half Chinese, cares only about the money. She more of an assasin type character, who's low on health, but quick and agile. To her everyone is dirty, she only cares about who pays the most money.

Chris Jacobs.
Chris is a cynical character from the U.S. He can take a lot of hits before he goes down. Whereas Jennifer is more stealthy, Chris is more brute force. There are no good guys and bad guys to him, just corrupt leaders and naive followers.

That's what I thought..
Why was the UN controversial?
In the game I mean, not in real life.
I hope they still have the totally over the top Air strikes.
It was also the first game I played where Jennifer Hale voiced one of the major characters, and where I knew who she was. (I wasn't aware she had played Bastila until after that.) I hope she plays Mui again in this one, then i'd be all set for another fantastic experience.
Know what I thought sucked in the first one? How there weren't enough missions available to avoid pissing off any given faction. Like, it wasn't possible to avoid shooting at Allied soldiers, at some point you'd have to either take an anti-Allied mission or quit the game. This struck me as incredibly lazy game design, or else a case of the designers having read about games like this but never actually playing one or seeing it in person.
But, yay, co-op. I don't know why the vehicles in the first game even had two positions, it's not like the AI could get the jump on a tree sloth, and they couldn't drive at all.
Yeah, that didn't come out right. It makes more sense now. I also added information, the game is coming out on the PC, 360, PS2, and PS3.

Because in the game, the AN is the organization placing bounties on the Deck of 52. Also, they hire the private military company that employs the player. Regardless of how individual member nations conduct themselves, the UN is officially opposed to both assassinations and the use of mercenaries. Hence the slight name change.
Colour me excited.
Pandemic put together some viral videos about hiring a soldier to help with the new game. pretty funny i thought.
I hear the emulation of the oXbox version on a 360 has framerate/random crashing issues, and the PS2 version wasn't too hot at release, so I suggest playing it on an oXbox.
猿も木から落ちる
Kind of.
Sorta.
Edit: I mean Catch-22 is funny...
PSN: super_emu
Xbox360 Gamertag: Emuchop
It is.
As I said before though, I have heard widespread issues surround really bad framerate, and the game freezing/crashing.
I think it might even be worse in the PAL version. I can't remember 100%, I am remembering it from an old thread.
Wikipedia says this -
What's the release date on world in flames?
Yep.
Edit: There is no release date for World in Flames yet. Some some early 08, maybe around April, some say June.
it's going to be the shit.
I'm a little disappointed that the suit of cards aren't going to return.

This is Russian Space station, and Sold.
You might be thinking of Armed and Dangerous, also published by Lucasarts a couple years before Mercenaries. Made by the same people that did Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Mercenaries had a slight sense of humor but wasn't going for being an outright funny game.
8th of Feb UK, less then a week later for the U.S would be good.
According to a dev post in their forums, all the same voice actors are returning. So, that's good.
Yes they are, looked it up but forgot about it. Take that UK, Mercs 2 is coming up here first. Yay.
Yes. Yes it would.
I liked the first game but it felt like it needed a little more polish. If thats how this game turns out, it will be awesome.
