So i had a talk with an apple rep, and although he didn't sound too happy about my idea, he informed me that the apple warranty is truly international and that any service agent, in any part of the world, must honour it.

It's a painless process. I had some warranty work done in Holland on my Canadian bought iBook G4 with 0 issues (short of not having the personal computer with all my notes on it for school).

Your purchase plan is good though, I intend to buy a new Macbook in the States rather than Canada to save a couple hundred bucks myself.

Anyone here know of any way I can connect my macbook to my ps3? I'd love to just let the ps3 be able to play my songs off itunes.

I would say that you could boot into target disk mode, however, that is FireWire only i think.

I'm not sure about hiding the text, but as far as file extensions go, go to Finder > Preferences > Advanced and uncheck 'Show all file extensions'. Note that this will hide all the file extensions on the desktop and in Finder windows; AFAIK, there's no way to show/hide one without doing the same to the other.

Since there really isn't an iPod thread, i'll just ask this here:

Any opinions on good iPod Touch cases? I'm not sure if i should go with hardshell or some rubbery material. This is my first iPod and i want it to last, especially when i paid $400 for it.

I'm not looking for a leather belt clip or something like that as my cell phone is already in a belt clip and until utility belts are in style, i don't want to go that way.

So what do you use or have you used that you liked?

Honestly? If you don't mind the back getting scratched (the metal casing part), don't worry about it. I ordered my iPod touch on launch and it resides in my pocket during most of the day. The screen hasn't gotten scratched a bit.

So uh, I'm installing Leopard on my MacBook and it did the whole verification thing with the disc, now it needs to do the actual install, but it's hung up. The disc drive keeps spinning up and stopping, trying to chose something in the menu bar has resulted in the spinning marble of doom.

OK, did a hard reset, now it's back to its antics of spitting out the Leopard DVD when it's restarting, per the Leopard install DVD. hurrrrrrgh, why must you do this to me.

Same thing happened to my when I was installing it on my MBP but I can't really remember what I did to fix it. I had to install another partition or something but I found my answers on the apple forums.

There is nothing wrong with the Macbooks at all. I'm in a Computer Science department and we give our professors Macbooks. Not heard a single complaint. They're more solid, computationally close to the MBP and a generally great machine.

I plan on getting one for my PhD (if I get offered a place :/ ) but as I intend on researching virtual worlds, the lack of a graphics chip might hurt me :/

I've just put Windows XP on my MacBookPro, but I need a little bit of help. It's shallow, but... yeah. I'm a Mac user, shallow is my middle name.

Really, I'd love to be able to skin or change the way XP looks so that it's... prettier. Maybe so that it looks like Vista or something, or just generally is more attractive. Hell, can we skin it to look like Leopard? If so, help me out, please.

I'm not sure how well it'll get along with BootCamp or Fusion/Parallels, but the UXTheme patcher is the best solution I've come across. get it here. Read through the whole process before starting it so you don't fuck anything up too bad.

I haven't tinkered with it much in years, since I found a theme I liked and haven't changed it since, but it's nothing too complex, here's a guide. Everything looks fine except it's missing some crucial \'s when it starts talking about the directory the themes go in, but you should be able to figure it out on your own. As for Leopard-alikes, poke around Neowin and maybe DeviantArt for one. Vista ones are a-plenty it would seem.

Well, it wouldn't do what i do on my current notebook any better than my current notebook does.

My reason for justifying a macbook pro is the 8600gt and the extra power, so it can double as a light gaming system. Really i want something that can manage all my computer based needs while on the go.

There's a general equation that you should keep in mind when considering a laptop for gaming.

    It is:

    Laptop + Gaming = :(

I know, i sell windows based computers and laptops for a living ;) *ducks*

However, the only games i play are WoW, WC3, D2 and some TF2. 128mb 8600gt has more than enough power for this.

So pretty much, i have a POS cheapy laptop (1.86 celeron, 1.5gb ram, 80gb hdd, Intel GMA950, 14.1") that i use for Interbutz, MSN, IRC, watching DVDs and Episodes, some coding (Java, C#) and documents. At both work and home.

Then i have a desktop (e4300, 3gb ram, x1950pro, 22", ~1TB storage) That is my gaming box, print and file server... I mean the only time i even use it is to game, the rest of the time it sits there extending media to my 360 and 32" HD LCD TV, hosting files/printer for my lappy and parents computer.

So a MacBook Pro melds everything bar the serving into 1 handy device that i can take with me wherever i go. The only thing stopping me is the $2.8k AUD entry price... and that there is a refresh around the corner.

But would you, though? And would you actually play games outside of your house?

I don't know what your needs for a laptop actually are, but as far as I'm concerned portability trumps everything, and the Macbook is a much, much better buy in this regard. Unless you have a definite, productive use for the larger monitor and better graphics card, which you absolutely must and will use on the go, I'd forget about the MBP.

[edit: by that I mostly mean I'm confused by the "wherever I go" bit, because you've only mentioned taking it to work and home. If this is something you fancy taking around just in general, you'll be really thankful for the smaller footprint, especially when you don't really need an 8800gt to look hip in a cafe.

The problem with laptop gaming isn't just performance. It's also that laptop keyboards have aren't great for games, their trackpads are useless, and they run hot when playing games. Battery life is also seriously degraded when the CPU and GPU are both running flat-out.

If you try to game on a train or a plane, you will end up frustrated with the controls and with burnt legs. In fact, gaming is a hassle in most places, as you basically need a table, a power point and room to set up your laptop and mouse to do any real gaming.

If you are travelling a lot (i.e. you live out of a suitcase), then a laptop with a dedicated GPU that you can use for games makes some sense. You can sit it on a table, hook up an external mouse and keyboard, and you are set. However, most people don't fall into that category.

It took me two "gaming" laptops (over the course of ten years) to finally work out that portability is king with laptops, and gaming is just a useless novelty. So, my most recent laptop was a Macbook. The extra money I would have spent on a Macbook Pro was put towards my next desktop PC purchase.

    • PC desktop for full-on gaming

    • Mac laptop for media/communicating/creative

In which case you can put the extra $hundreds you would have spent on going from MB to MBP on some major upgrades for the PC that will do gaming a lot better than the Pro would have anyway.

Do you guys know where the refurbished computers apple offers originate from? Like, if I picked up a refurbished macbook, I'm sure it would work without a hitch, but is the possibility strong that it could be scratched to shit and look terrible?

I'm in the same boat as the guy above (macbook vs. pro). I've owned a G4 iBook before, and the white finish got yellow'd and dirty rather quickly, especially where my palms rest on the keyboard (and I am a guy who obsessively washes up). So maybe it makes me sound superficial, but if I were to get a macbook then I would get a black one, and with those going for $1549, that leaves only around a $400 difference between that and the entry level pro at $1999, which would give me a bigger screen, 1GB more RAM standard, and non-shared video memory. I wouldn't be gaming on it, but for a $400 difference, I can't decide between the two.

I dunno how it got so dirty. I'm a little obsessive-compulsive, and clean my stuff constantly, especially my computers and gadgets, so it wasn't because I'm a gross lazy slob. :P It just got worse and worse after about a year, with the worst discoloration being around the base of the keyboard section, as well as the trackpad + button. I know it doesn't affect the how productive I am with the machine, but it bugged the everloving hell out of me, and wouldn't want it happening again.

Your average laptop can't support this. Regular USB ports only carry 500mA over power, the MBA is rated somewhere around 1000mA.

The gaming will only really come into it on 2 occasions: Work and GF's place.
Work: Well i have 3 - 5 hours of spare time in most of my work days, that really is a pretty solid amount of gaming. An 8600gt can handle a surprising level of games too.
GF's place: I'm an early riser, her whole family aren't. Considering I'm there every night/morning i have off, it could be factored in.

Really thats as far as gaming goes, but 12 - 30 hours a week where i could be kicking some ass on TF2 while getting paid makes it worth while, rite?
