I was just wondering what sort of community there was for R6 as of right now. I saw the previews on Gamespot for the second and after playing so much CoD4 recently I've somewhat been wanting for something a bit different. The previews for this sequel got me so excited in fact that I picked up the game again, but found that finding a match online was... difficult. Is anyone interested in playing this still; because I'm ready and raring to organize up a few matches.
I had R6:V for a good while, but it would keep giving me disc read errors. The stuff that I was able to play was awesome, and co-op was a big hit with me.
R6:V2 should be great, but what's it going to be about this time? Russia invades Vegas?
I think the idea is that it's going to be some sort of tying up of loose ends. Killing all the villains who escaped and whatnot. However Russia invades Vegas honestly sounds a lot more interesting to me.

Why does every game (on the 360) have to be Calypso Casino? Sure it's a great map, but everyone knows it so well now that most games end as a stalemate.
Finding a match has always been time-consuming in Vegas. I was averaging twelve to fifteen minutes of waiting to get into a game, so I called it quits. It's not the lowered number of players, it's the lousy matchmaking system that leaves people on the sidelines forever and a day. In contrast, Call of Duty 4 takes almost no time to get me into a match, and even Halo 3's matchmaking does a better job.
I played this game for a long time. For around seven months, I was playing at least a couple hours every night.
But there's really not much of a reason to anymore. There are far, far better multiplayer games on Live now. At the time R6V was released, I would have said it was the best but it really isn't anymore. It's far too random and the weapons are frustratingly finicky.
The weapons fall into two categories: useless and somewhat useful. LMGs, sniper rifles, and pistols fall under useless. Everything else falls under somewhat useful. However, everything somewhat useful is almost exactly the same. The differences in accuracy and damage and range are all completely negligible no matter how different the meters look. Before the first patch, you could have also added assault rifles to the useless weapons.
But sometimes you'll be able to pick off enemies from across the map with a pistol and other times, under the exact same circumstances, you can have an assault rifle and miss by ten feet. It's impossible to predict how your weapons will perform and it only gets worse when you're in close quarters where your pin-point accurate SMG (well, pin-point accurate if you're sniping with it) suddenly has a ten foot spread because you were moving at a light jog and somehow the floor and ceiling make a better target than the guy standing in front of you shooting and hitting you.
And why do SMGs make better sniper weapons than the sniper rifles, anyway? Despite being rifles specifically designed for precision shooting, they somehow have ended up being the least accurate and most shit weapons in the whole fucking game and using one is like asking to be sniped from half the map away by someone smarter than you that decided to try sniping with an SMG about the size of a coffee mug.
The only thing that's still unmatched is the character customization, which is amazing and I'd often spend hours playing dress up with my character. It's just too bad that to unlock new mostly cosmetic stuff, you have to level.
And the leveling system is horrible. We'll have none of this "constant rewards" bullshit that other newer games like CoD4 seem to enjoy or even the less enjoyable skill dependent leveling of Halo 3. No, each level requires hours to weeks of real-time playtime. After seven months, I'm still three ranks from the max rank. FUN!
So anyway, no, I don't play anymore.
EDIT: And don't even get me started on the single-player. It's like a shitty, boring version of Gears of War with a Clancy skin. Isn't it funny how when the first Ghost Recon came out, people complained that all Ghost Recon was was a dumbed down Rainbow Six but now all Rainbow Six is is a dumbed down version of Ghost Recon?

Say what you will, but the controls and the cover system for R6 Vegas was WAAYYYY better than Gears of War and Ghost Recon. Oh and the shitty boring version of Gears of War, was actually Gears of War itself.
I never liked R6 Vegas... I much prefer Ghost Recon, although both of them are equally as unfairly hard as the other in campaign mode.

I concur, though at least Ghost Recon's campaign had the fancy-schmancy HUD readings which made finding enemies a bit easier. I always found it hard to see R6 Vegas' bad guys against the scenery, especially on the opening mission.

R6 has some very odd issues with contrast, when I first played it I could hardly see anything on the screen. Turning up the contrast and brightness controls by a lot made it bearable. I've never had to do that for a game before...

Yeah, don't get me wrong here, R6 had it's share of faults. You pretty much mentioned the biggie though, SMGs were in fact the best long range weapon available, better than assault rifles, better than sniper rifles, better than anything. Personally when I played I didn't experience that same finickyness you're talking about, and at least between SMGs and assault rifles I noticed a pretty big contrast between how they handled; but you're entitled to your opinion and you played longer than I have so maybe I just haven't reached that level where the minutiae come in to play as much.
As for the leveling system, I probably would've disagreed with you a few months ago but CoD has spoiled me and going back to the old system does seem like it would be a huge pain.
As for not playing anymore, I hope you can reconsider as since you've been playing for a while you're probably pretty damn good at the game and again I'd be ecstatic if we could get a few pretty good old players together and just rock it one night. If anyone's interested feel free to suggest times and whatnot, I'm usually available weekdays from 4:30-7:00pm (completely free) and maybe 9:00-10:30pm (not necessarily free). As for weekends just about anytime is good before 11:00pm on Sundays .
I had this on PS3 (might still have it). While the gameplay itself is simply amazing, the fact is that on the PS3, the online functionality sucks balls. Add to this that the mods on the official site are all downright 360 fanboys who were more than happy to be incredible dicks to anyone who tried to form a community, and... well.... there you have it.
Still waiting on the patch for this game Ubisoft...

That sucks. A friend of mine also owns the PS3 version and he's had similar problems. I've got the 360 version myself, but I can't seem to remember; can 360 users play with PS3 users or was that deemed too good of an idea?

They can't because it runs through Live on the 360 and it sets up the games using Live's infrastructure as do all non-MMO Live games. The PS3 version requires Ubisoft to set up its own servers as such a service has not been provided by Sony.
I don't like it. Whenever anyone gets the package on the Casino level they take it back to spawn and camp like bitches just to get points. Even then most of the game is a camp-fest. It could've been fun to me but everyone is a god-damned point whore. It pisses me off when people just camp the whole game.

I really doubt that PS3 and 360 users will ever get cross-platform multiplayer. And I'm not sure I'd want it if it was available.
But yeah, R6 was the first anywhere-close-to-decent shooter on the PS3 after Resistance (FEAR and the Darkness not worth mentioning in my book) and comparing the online of the two is just pitiful. The real shame is that I vastly prefer the gameplay of R6.

Too true. I created some topics at the official Ubisoft forums (notably this one) and they really don't give a damn about the PS3 version. Hopefully with the Unreal Engine updated, the game won't be as jerky and the online interface will improve some.
A great game ruined by an unusable online interface.

Heh. One of the guys that was (at the time) in my clan, he's... well... excitable. And he's one of those guys that just couldn't play the game because it lagged so hard. So he makes a thread there to complain about it, wanting a refund and whatnot, and a mod says 'call customer service, they'll give you one'. So that's what he does. Wanna take a guess what CS told him?
He started ranting there and on our clan board about it, so our clan leader calls up their US corporate office and manages to get it escalated to the point that he gets the direct email address of the VP of North American Marketing. (Why marketing? No idea) After a few weeks of exchanging emails, including listing the names of all the guys in our clan who literally could not play the game due to lag or disconnects, he gets in on a conference call with this guy, me, one of their forum admins, and one of the net programmers I guess. (They were nonspecific about job titles)
So we're on the phone with them for an hour, basically saying 'look, Resistance, which was a launch title, handles all this shit really really well. You can do this this this and this in that game with zero problems. This list of guys can play with zero lag. In R6, they cannot play. We cannot do those things. Also, your mods are dicks. *and here by 'dicks' I don't mean in the typical modly sense, but actually being dicks* What's the deal?'
Well we were told to expect a patch soon (this was in August I believe), and that they would do something about the forum staff, and this and that and the other thing.
We won't be getting R6:V2, that's for sure.
I guess what it boils down to, on the PS3 side, is that I was one of maybe 20 or 30 guys that migrated from the really strong Resistance community to R6 when it launched. We tried to start up the same sort of community on the Ubi board and get things going, and were met with outright hostility, and after a couple months of that just gave up. I think the turning point was when one of the board admins said that to fix the online problems, all you have to do is download the latest PS3 firmware update. (This is, of course, both false and not an option if you want to play online at all)
And then the Warhawk beta dropped, a bunch of us got in, and we said 'fuck it'. Really awesome game that got ruined by shitty online and shitty customer support. The only thing I've played that was more fun than getting hammered and doing terrorist hunts is Rock Band.
I don't like it. Whenever anyone gets the package on the Casino level they take it back to spawn and camp like bitches just to get points. Even then most of the game is a camp-fest. It could've been fun to me but everyone is a god-damned point whore. It pisses me off when people just camp the whole game.
Yeah, I remember that, what a massive problem on Calypso. That's why I usually preferred LVU; but then again half the time the team what started in the office building type area could usually lock down the other team in their spawn before halfway through the game. What seems to be happening now is that everyone just wants to do co-op terrorist hunt on the hardest mode with high density as that apparently is what will level you the quickest; I however could really use a few good A&D matches on some different maps as terrorist hunt is boring as hell for me (except for some pretty fun split-screen action with a friend).
My favorite A&D map has always been Dante's, but it rarely ever got played even when I was playing.
It's not the best map for the other game modes, but Dante's has a clear linear progression with multiple routes with good defensive positions that take actual skill and tactics to make it through. And then the bomb is smack dab in the middle of a very exposed position that requires coordination and care to defuse.
In defense of Calypso however there are some really nice chokepoints throughout the level (any of the staircases come to mind) a couple routes up and down through the place, and the slots room makes for some great action when you have teams that use tactics well and know how to flank. My only big complaint about the level was that once the bomb was on the rooftop it was almost impossible to get up there and take it back. Anyone by the landing pad could pop out and snipe any of the given ways up to the roof, and frankly because there was only the one staircase up to the chopper it felt a little badly planned out. As for a big positive though whenever the bomb was in the vault I had loads of fun defending it or getting it out of there. Plus that was the only time where I really saw people doing some intense CQB.
The fact that any map with a package will have the package grabbed in the first few minutes and then held at the extraction point for upwards of ten minutes is why I prefer the maps with bombs. It's almost inevitable since the defending team can't move the package and the attackers can just keep playing leap frog until they get it where they need to.
On the bomb maps, everyone has to rush to the bomb because you don't know how many attempts it's going to take to actually get it defused and it takes a while to defuse it, so it's easier to defend. It actually leads to engaging and challenging games. With the package, you just keep throwing bodies at it and eventually it will get to the extraction point because no one plays A&D without setting the time limit to 15 minutes and it never takes that long to grab it.
Agreed. I can't stand long A&D games, a good A&D should be short, with teams that know how to use tactics well. I think I've been moderately lucky with my experience with that game mode though, when R6 was popular and my friends were playing it we got together all the time to do A&D on whatever map was available, and with short time limits it lead to a much more intense vibe (and, in a way more importantly, to the defense team WINNING more). Bomb's good too though. I'd be willing to play just about anything aside from DM stuff if people in the thread decided to play.
It's funny that you should bring this topic up, I just bought R6 and have been wondering if anyone still plays. Games played with random strangers are not nearly as much fun.
Not to be a broken record here but again, I'm absolutely up for a good night of revelries with some PA forum members; but we should probably try to get a bunch of people involved (perhaps enough that there would be no randoms at all during the matches). Even without that level of participation though, I'm still looking for those who are able and willing, feel free to PM me when you're available and I'll see if I can't work something out. Or better yet just post your gamertag and when you're available in-thread and we can discuss the actual organization of the thing together. (I say gamertag because I have R6 for the Xbox, but clearly anyone with a copy of R6 can try to organize something here, I just won't be able to participate in it; but yeah this thread is totally open to any and all R6 related gaming.)
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but, when I try to do Co-op it only lets 2 people out of the 3. But seeing those 4 xbox symbols leads me to think that up to 4 people can play. Does anyone have a clue what's going on? I'm just doing Co-op from one system by the way.
I just got the game, it's pretty good but I havent taken it online yet. I'm playing the campaign on Realistic and the checkpoints are absurdly far apart. Why is this?
I'm still up for some R6V. My gamertag is templewulf.
@Pancake: SMGs are good for medium-range accurate shots, but they just don't have the power to be a good sniper rifle. Their stopping power drops off dramatically at range; so much so that it took me four headshots with the UMP45 from the top of the Library to kill someone on the street. I can kill lots of people with one or two solid body shots from the semi-automatic sniper-rifle.

It's perfectly balanced for Normal mode; you're not Halo-invincible, but I regularly soak SMG fire just to pop a couple of guys. In Realistic, any jackass can kill you at any point, so I'm not sure if there's any way not to be frustrated.
Pancake is just mad because she couldn't hang with me and Sladvan.
I'd be up for playing this again. Tonight probably won't work for me, but I should be around the rest the week through the weekend.
I will wait and see what R6V2 has to offer before I buy it. R6V was great, but they need to move on from the setting, re-introduce planning, and give us more guns with more configuration options. Matchmaking improvements would also be welcome.

Are you being snarky because you still disagree, or because noone here is allowed to concede a point gracefully? Or is that even sarcasm? I don't know anymore!

I still disagree.
I used to often snipe at range with SMGs and as far as I know, headshots are always, always, always one-shot kills regardless of distance and weapon damage, so reduced power from range doesn't mean anything unless you aren't, in fact, hitting them in the head.
The SMGs are better than they used to be, though. I remember back in the day when the MP9 was the best long range weapon in the game and the best close range weapon in the game.

It's not the best map for the other game modes, but Dante's has a clear linear progression with multiple routes with good defensive positions that take actual skill and tactics to make it through. And then the bomb is smack dab in the middle of a very exposed position that requires coordination and care to defuse.
Anything with a package is awful.
And the first game I joined, I was greeted by a guy with a southern drawl talking about his new gun.
It felt like coming home.
Not really. It feels kind of floaty and weird. Not as sharp as Halo or CoD4.
Gamertag is in sig, I usually play between 6-9PM GMT.

Probably. The [strike]Wall Grab Technology[/strike] cover system is a key part of the game.

You have totally convinced me of the error of my ways.
