Ok so last night my power went out, this morning my external 500gb comes up with an error "This drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now?". Is my drive completly screwed taking all my data along with it or is there anything i can do to try and get it back. I assume if i reformat it'll be fine and i can start rebuilding my collection of cartoons, but i'd really rather not go that way.

If the drive can still spin up and run fine, then yes, you can definitely get a decent amount of data off of it... last time I did that I randomly googled for unerase/undelete programs (it's the same concept as getting back files that you threw in the recycle bin) and found a bunch of shareware stuff on download.com, but I'm sure someone else can recommend a better free program to do it
