Huh. I had never caught a Croagunk in the 9 months I've owned the game. Go figure. I only found this out because I've been thinking of putting Weezing in instead of Gardevoir, to fix the noticable lack of a Defense-oriented Pokemon that can use Special Attacks. Also, since Pain Split is awesome.
Note: Actually getting a Black Sludge is a bitch and a half.
And new Pokeymans/Smash Bros sig and avatar, whooo!
Actually, I have a bit of news that follows that, Emerl. Today my friend needed black sludge for his muk. I go out to the marshes, first encounter was a croagunk. I catch him second try, and get another in that run, right?
Go back to the PC, check items-- the first one I caught had Black Sludge. Crazy lucky. 5% chance with 15% chance of even finding him in the first place.
I used to ask a friend to hatch my breeding projects, so that they'd gain levels faster once I was happy with one, but it was just too much trouble to trade, check nature/ability/IVs, and pick one. Instead, I spent an entire day trying to get a Lucky Egg in the Trophy Mansion on a Chansey day. That was dull, but worth it.
Oops, I read your post wrong yesterday. In adition, I also explained my post in a wrong way :S I guess it was the headache I had yesterday. Whatever, you know what the EXP Share does.

Serebii says it's a 10% chance of finding Croagunks. So, assuming you were to wander in there and find a Croagunk with the Black Sludge as your very first Pokemon, that would be a 1/200 chance.
Looks like I've got some work ahead of me. I've already caught 9 or so in close to 2 hours, but nothing yet.
Oops, I read your post wrong yesterday. In adition, I also explained my post in a wrong way :S I guess it was the headache I had yesterday. Whatever, you know what the EXP Share does.
I thought I'd missed something huge, or had a glitch on my cart - glad to know it was just mutual misunderstanding!
Now that the dust has settled, I see the verdict is:
Exp Share a Poke, place it in First, Switch to one that can handle itself. Rinse, Repeat ad nauseam.
Lastly, does level diff between these matter? Can I use my lvl 69 Alakazam to plow through Victory Road, when the Poke I'm trying to level is much lower?
I have a KADABRA that I use as my main poke and I recently found out that the only way to get him to evolve more is to trade him. Only problem is, I don't have anyone to trade with. I've just got in to the game and I'm not really clear on everything going on. Do I just have to trade him with anyone? Does that person give him back to me? How does this work?
Ok so I just started getting super into Pokemon Diamond.
Im currently running a team of
Arcanine
Leafeon
Glaceon
Dragonite
I really wanna replace the Arcanine with a Charizard but I need to trade for that.
I also want a Gengar and possibly replace my Glaceon with an Articuno for uber win.
One question though:
Its really frustrating that I can only search for pokemon to trade on the gtc by what i have in my pokedex. is there a way to quickly expand my pokedex?
Also, remember that story Gabe told ages ago when he went to the pokemon tournament thing and all the kids didnt give a shit about EVs or proper training and just wanted cool pokemon. well thats me.

I'll trade with you so you can evolve those. Send me a PM if you want to do it.
One more thing. I'm playing through the storyline right now. I was given an egg at one point during the game and I have no idea what to do with it. Can I give it an Exp Share and have it hatch?

I could trade you a baby Charmander, if you like. You could have Ancient Power on there (only egg-move that seemed worth it to me if you're going with special attacks), or I could start it off with Flamethrower from level 1. It'd learn Flamethrower on its own, however.

(If I've made any mistakes here, please correct me! I don't want to spread misinformation, and I've only really been playing seriously since Ruby/Sapphire.)
The best way to maximize your Pokedex in single player is to seek out and battle every NPC trainer (outside the Battle Tower, which doesn't count). Fighting most of them will at least allow you to have 'seen' data in your 'dex for most of the Pokemon that your version doesn't have (at least I recall that is how I was able to ask for a Larvitar, among other things).
If you have access to the internet and wifi, though, its quicker to seek out other players and offer to trade for Pokemon that you don't have any 'dex data for at all. I know many of us here have most (or all) of the Pokemon, and are willing to trade the breedable ones. That's how I got my nearly-full Pokedex, and I'm willing to trade over starters and other things if folks need them, either for data or to try to breed some killer Pokemon. Just ask!
Also, only really worry about leveling the Pokemon you're going to send into the E4 right now.. the area around the Battle Tower is far better for EXP grinding than Victory Road is, but you've got to clear the E4 first.

Blehhh, figures. I can get the perfect Hidden Power on my first try, and I can find a Shiny Machop with a usable Nature, but I can't find an item that has a 1/20 chance of appearing with well over 20 of the Pokemon that carries it.
so I've done everything in the game and now I want to start really training some pokes. thing is, I need a way to ... you know, get the pokes. the global trading thing is ridiculous (level 1 bulbasaur for level 100 mew pst)
that and I would submit myself to the PA Pokegurus. any advice for a guy starting out on EV training? I grasp the whole concept (fight this poke and you get 1-3 magic invisible points that increase your stats by X amount at level 100) but I don't really grasp the whole competitive battling paradigm.
should I be looking about for serious strategies (I've heard about like combos and stuff, like belly drum charizards?) or can I go into this training a team of pokemon I like and still do reasonably well?
TL;DR: looking for someone who can breed me some pokes. am newb.
(don't have my DS with me or I'd slap down my friend code. it's irrelevant atm because I don't have wifi access til friday at the earliest but still getting in contact with some helpful dudes who run the pokemon farms would be awesome)
For getting the Pokés, you could do worse than poking about in this thread. I've bred the three RBY starters for some people on here, though.
Can't really help you with the serious battle strategies. I got pwnzed on my first attempt of the challenge. I think this is, in part, because the bulk of my strategy is 'Find fast Poké with high Attack/Sp.Attack. Train moves. Max EVs in Speed and Attack/Sp.Attack. Flail madly against Walls/Sponges and diiiiiie.' (Though I hear that combining Endure with one of the 'in a pinch' berries can work very well on a Sweeper, as can the Focus-Sash+Endeavor/Reversal/Counter/Mirror Coat combo.)
thank you so very much. that was exactly what I was looking for. I think I'm probably going to subscribe to your strategy (maybe with a couple 'sit there and get punched in the face' pokes too)
I can't really explain strategy to you, or anyone, the best I can tell you is to just try it out for yourself and learn from experience. Like Kay, just make some fast sweepers and see what happens. Or come up with some ideas, post them and ask us for advice.
fight this poke and you get 1-3 magic invisible points
Keep in mind that with Pokerus and a Macho Brace that becomes 4, 8 or 12 magic invisible points and with Pokerus+Power Item thats 10,12 or14 magic invisible points. That makes things a hell of a lot faster.
and with the GTS it's always better to offer something and ask for what you want. If you make a decent offer you're more likely to get what you want than if you try and find a decent offer.
There's a lot of EV training and general strategy guides linked in the first post of the thread. But experience is something you'll need to get from battling, mostly. I'd advise against making an entire team of 'sweepers', as those teams tend to break quickly once a good tank or status-inducing Pokemon takes the field. There's many different ways to build a team. My current team includes three sweepers, two 'tanks' and one Pokemon mostly dedicated to causing status issues. However my hail-themed team only has two Pokemon that could be called 'sweepers', yet its one of my most successful teams so far.
As for getting new Pokemon, just post on here asking for whichever ones you don't have. I don't mind hooking people up with various Pokemon. I do need to update that Pokemart post though. I've pretty much got all the breedable Pokemon by now (and currently have a few extra Totodiles with Dragon Dance and Ice Punch lurking about my 'needs a new home' box).
macho brace. where does one find one of these... 'macho braces'
(I have a couple pokes with pokerus hum-de-dumming around in my box so that's a non-issue)
also, yeah, I know the GTS you can find stuff you want but I need to see stuff first. I only have about 230 of pokes seen (plus I understand a lot of people do move breeding, something I'd like to pretty much avoid if I can because breeding for natures and EV training seems to be pretty damn obnoxious)
I have this team bred out, I'm going to start EVing them shortly, but I have a second team I want to build and I think those pokes will be more than a little bit harder to get
Spiritomb has no weaknesses so your first team is pretty safe. Second team has a Ground weakness with only one immunity. Earthquake is one of the most overused attack in the game, so I'd advise packing an extra resist or immune.
Posts
Let me guess. You haven't played since RBY, right?
Chatot
Steelix
Roselia
Weaville
Alakazam
These are based on their levels and moves they currently have. NOt sure who the 6th will be though.
Well, I just fought a level 50-something Raticate with Exp. Shares (one from Ruby that I Pal-parked in, the other from Diamond) on two seperate Pokémon, and a different one in the lead.
Lead Pokémon got 645, the other two both got 322. Half for the Exp. Shares, half to the battler.
Then I tried putting the Exp. Share on a Pokémon not in the battle, switched from the lead Pokémon to another (as Banzai was doing) in a fight, and found that the one with the Exp. Share got 430, the other two got 215. Half for the Exp. Share, half split among the battlers.
Lastly, I put a Pokémon with the Exp. Share in the front position, then switched out to something else. The switched-out Pokémon with the Exp. Share got 474, and the switched-in Pokémon got 158. That's a 75%/25% split, which works out at 50% for the Exp. Share, and the other 50% shared out equally to the battlers.
This is the US edition of Diamond, and I'm sure it was the same in my US Ruby, though I only had one Exp. Share to play with in that one. (And now, no Exp. Share. Sadfaces.) RBY and GSC are the two generations I didn't actually play much of.
Pokemon from a different trainer (traded pokemon) gain twice as much Experience.
Although, now i'm not sure how that applies to your post. Hm.
NNID-InvisibleInk
In RBY there was no EXP Share. There was EXP All, which gave experience to all Pokés in your party. From GSC on, the EXP share has given extra EXP to the Poké holding it.
Trivia: EXP Share in Japan is called something like Learning Sender.
Note: Actually getting a Black Sludge is a bitch and a half.

It 'twas a good day.
I don't understand how that applies to what I posted - The Exp. Share gives experience from a battle to the Pokémon holding it, and it doesn't even need to be in there. The Lucky Egg adds 50% experience to whatever a Pokémon holding it earns, though. So the best way for a low-level Pokémon (which was Banzai's problem) to gain experience would be to give it the Exp. Share, put it in the lead position, then switch it out to something that could take on the opponent. Or am I totally misunderstanding his problem here?
I only used Pokémon that I'd hatched to get the experience values I posted previously - the Pal-parking comment was just to explain how I got two Exp. Share items - I'd been asked before. Not sure if you can get multiple ones from the same game in one playthrough.

No, the only way to hatch an egg is to put it in the party, and run around with it. If you have a Pokémon with the Flame Body or Magma Armor ability, they'll make it hatch faster. Otherwise, it's going to take you about 6-7 thousand steps. I like to take 'em to the Cycling Road, and hatch them while watching something on TV. You just need to push up on the d-pad every couple of seconds briefly.
There's no way to quickly expand your Pokédex that I'm aware of, I'm afraid. If you encounter a Pokémon in the wild, or in a battle with an NPC trainer, you add the name to your 'dex, and can then trade for it. However, the Battle Tower doesn't seem to apply to this. Neither does battling with people over wifi.
I could trade you a baby Charmander, if you like. You could have Ancient Power on there (only egg-move that seemed worth it to me if you're going with special attacks), or I could start it off with Flamethrower from level 1. It'd learn Flamethrower on its own, however.
Level difference doesn't matter. The only thing you need to worry about, is if any of the Pokémon in the area you're training in use Pursuit regularly - then they could hit the lowbie Pokémon as you switch it out.
(If I've made any mistakes here, please correct me! I don't want to spread misinformation, and I've only really been playing seriously since Ruby/Sapphire.)

R&B, G&S, and R&S Starters?
Masterball for that shiny I am expecting to see, and I love all the starters, so I want them, particularly all the fire starters.

Froslass
Spiritomb
Torkoal
Milotic
Hippowdon
(Just looking for critique there really, I know I have two ghost types but Spiritomb is from what I hear The Bee's Knees and I like Froslass)
Team 2 I'm hoping to slap together a team of
Lunatone
Weavile
Toxicroak
Scizor
Swampert
Rapidash
From the outset there what do you think the main weakness for each of those teams are?
