Wii Sports - Golf
Super Swing Golf
Super Swing Golf: Season 2
Tiger Woods 2007
Tiger Woods 2008
Are there any others?
Does anyone have any favorites? Least favorites?
Which one has the most realistic swing? Putting?
Does anyone have any really cool Wii-golfing-moment stories?
The only one I have right now is Wii Sports. I took my Wii home with me for Christmas (which caused a bit of confusion at the Green Bay airport security checkpoint), and it was a huge hit... especially golf and bowling. I think the moment I knew my mom was hooked was when she actually took the time to read the lie of the green for an important shot. She never managed to beat me, but my stepdad did by going for the "risky" path on the 9th hole. I haven't played Wii golf much - my low's only 4-under (which is, needless to say, a good deal better than my best *real* golf score) - but I'm wondering if there's a more fleshed-out golf game that's worth buying.

Our last major get-together had Wii-Sports and Tiger Woods 07. 4 people jumped on woods 07 right away and all 4 of them HATED the swing mechanic so they quit out and tried Wii-Sports golf and all of them liked it a lot more. Even though it was not a realistic mechanic, they liked it a lot more than what woods 07 offered.
But that is just 4 people at a party who had not played either before that day.
I am really looking forward to We Love Golf. Or is it Wii Love Golf. I think Capcom is publishing it, and it sounds pretty marvelous. I'd find a link, but I'm busy at work....
I was jazzed about this kind of thing for the Wii but it ends up being another gimmick for me. I'm about a 10 handicap and we strapped the remote to a 7-iron for TW07 and it was not fun at all. All over the place.
Something with more realism would be cool... but nothing exists. If it's going to be video game golf where scoring over par is failing then I'd rather do it with a traditional controller. Or stick to Wii Sports Golf where basically everyone can win.
Funny, I almost made a topic asking about Super Swing Golf Season 2 but decided against it, as I shouldn't be buying more shit now anyway.
I'm a closer golf-video-game freak, and so far I'm torn. As far as swing mechanics I'm in the minority of people that really liked the way Super Swing Golf (the first one) handled, as opposed to the "swing speed determines power" methods like in Wii Sports golf. What killed SSG for me was the erratic AI and ultra-kawaii ^_______^ nature of the game, or at least the latter kept me from playing the game by myself with my wife watching. I've barely seen any press about SSG Season 2, but one of the reviews said that AI was improved, which was my main complaint, so I'll likely buy it for cheap at some point down the road. The whole "click to hold your power meter" mechanic was really cool, and the angle of your club face/Wii remote on the downswing determined the hook/slice, although none of my other friends could figure out how to use it well.
I've also tried Tiger Woods '07 a little bit, and while it was pretty good I had a hell of a time hitting anything under 70% power. I've played a metric shit-ton of console Tiger, which uses analog-stick controls to simulate this kind of thing, so for me not having that kind of precision was irritating. I was almost set on buying TW '08 but held off as it had no online multiplayer to speak of (I still play Tiger '06 PS2 online with friends, to show you my circle's dedication to the game!).
We Love Golf is coming up. It's by Camelot, makers of the awesome Mario Golf games. Apparently there will be Phoenix Wright characters playable in it.
This is my highest hope for Ultimate Wii Golf Game, since Camelot's always done a nice job with the MG series. Barring terrible impressions it's a day 1 buy for me.
EDIT: My dream golf game is a console version of Shot Online, the niche-within-a-niche golf MMO that Tycho opined about for like a week or two a few years ago. I tried it and it's fucking awesome, plus the community was really nice seeing as how it's a free Korean MMORPG ... with golf. It's got the three-click swing system like 90 percent of all other golf games, but it requires a great deal of precision to use. It has stats and everything, so higher-level peeps have better gear and longer drives but I often took down people dozens of levels above me due to skill and luck. Great game.
Mario golf always annoyed me. Maybe it was because I was a noob or something, but I would have a perfectly lined up shot, setup so that 100% power will put the ball right where I want it. I hit the shot with perfect timing, but apparently TOO good. Some flashy SUPERPOWER thing happens and the ball goes WAAAAY past where it was supposed to go into rough/water/out of bounds. This happened to me 3 times on three holes and I lost all interest in ever playing that game again.

Super Swing Golf is ok. Multiplayer is a bitch to get working (least I thought so) and it's annoying as hell that you can't just click through the computers turn. Other then that, I have no complaints.

I can't link 'cause I'm at work, but I remember seeing a preview of it on IGN a while back, to take a look there. Shouldn't be too hard to find. A host of Capcom character models are available, like Chun Li and Phoenix Wright. Hopefully it lives up to it's potential.

You were accidentally giving the ball super topsin, it seems.

That's what I was thinking. Too bad you didn't know how to play, because you missed out on one hell of a game. Personally, I really loved the Mario Golf RPG on the Gameboy Advance by Camelot. That was totally awesome, and the GBA-GC connectivity was pretty cool even though barely anyone probably got to experience it.
I've got Tiger Woods '08, and it's really good. It's really fun, fairly challenging (for me anyway). There are only two problems with it: I really struggle to accurately hit between 20 and 90%, and when I played multiplayer, the putting was very difficult. I don't know why, I love putting in single-player, but as soon as someone else is playing with me, it becomes incredibly difficult to do a small put. Or any other, really.
But apart form that, it's a really fun game, the controls work very nicely, and there is SO MUCH to unlock, and the PGA season, as well as the TIger Challenge, are really big and will take a long time to finish.
I've played Super Swing and Wii Sports Golf, and I really thought Super Swing was better, the skill was based on reading the lay of the land, using the specials. Rather than the actual swing, I found Wii Golf a little harder because the skill was based on the swing and I found the remote wasn't accurate enough at times
... and pangya is just a cool word.

You have to think at some point EA will get their shit together and publish a very lifelike golf game. My dream would be to have a solid Tiger Woods title with DLC for special courses like Augusta National.
Until then though I will wait in the wings. I have TW08 for PS2 which is a lot of fun.

I am pretty stunned that nobody has made a golf game with a true swing mechanic in it yet. There are several companies that crank out golf games, and I think any golf fan would have been happy with last years game with a good swing mechanic on the Wii. The entire dev cycle could be put towards nothing but swing controls.
Does anyone think it might be an issue with a controller limitation? I know the controller is pretty sensitive on tilt, but I don't really know how accurate the accelerometers are which would be key for the wiimote to track (or even guestimate) its current position. I would really need to see a demo where the 'game' just tries to track the position of the controller from the feedback and see how easy it is to confuse or get out of position.

I'm not ashamed to admit that Super swing Gold... actually improved my golf game.
Since it recognizes when your wrist isn't straight on contact (which is pretty important in that game), I had to almost practice to get that perfect shot. I can actually land on the fairway now when I play real golf.

my wife likes to play dress up with the characters inbetween games
Edit: I've also played WiiGolf and Tiger woods '08.
WiiGolf I feel is restricting my swing. If I try to do a power swing I am punished. Its an alright minigame, but thats it. Putting on it is pretty good.
Tigerwoods... meh... very meh. I played a "quick game" and couldn't force myself to finish 18 holes.
Ya the controller can't tell where it is in 3d space but that shouldn't matter at all. A smooth and tempo'd swing should be really easy to track.
If something does come it won't be it's own game. It will be new mode in Tiger Woods or something because a game where the average person would shoot double par for a course just wouldn't sell very many copies.

EA Sports has done it before - they can just have AI "swing assists" as an option to correct your swing (to reduce the effects of an off-kilter club face, for example). I disagree that a realistic-scoring golf game wouldn't sell well. I look outside at the 6 inches of snow on the ground, and would kill for a game that would simulate a golf-like experience as much as possible.

I've played all of them (ALL OF THEM) and I find Super Swing 2 to be the best Wii golf game. Granted, it's emphasis isn't so much on the accuracy of the swing, it's the most enjoyable and prettiest golf game on the Wii right now.

Do you mind elaborating on the game a bit? You're the only person in existence I've heard say they own the game, and I'm really curious. What I didn't like about SSG 1 was how random playing against the computer in the Story mode seemed to be; sometimes I'd get whooped hard-core and then on the next hole the AI would get 9 OBs in a row and disqualify. I really liked the swing system from the original, though.

You and everyone else. If it was realistic enough, you could make a fortune selling the Wii as a golf simulator. Do you have any idea how much money golf people will spend on golf shit?

I really only played multiplayer. This is the thing with Wii games: the launch titles were unpolished but a lot had potential. They're now releasing sequels that are more honed and ultimately better. I did not play a lot of single player, but the stuff I did play was totally enjoyable and I did not notice a huge amount of AI shenanigans.
The putting system feels better than the first, not changed, just better. It's just like the first game, but more and better. That's about it. It's not horribly hard either, at least I didn't find it to be.

I got Super Swing 2 shortly before Christmas and puttered around on it for a night, until I got the swinging down. It's a lot better than Wii Sports Golf, which I never really enjoyed because I couldn't figure out how to putt correctly, and hated the *wah wah wah* thing that happens when you swing too hard. I took the game home to my parents' on Christmas day, and almost as soon as we had presents opened my dad, my wife, and I had started up a 9 hole game, and my dad LOVED it. He really loved the music in general, especially so when putting. Before the first hole was up, he had a better swing than I did, and was coaching me on how to hit straight. He did get greedy on one of the later holes on the front nine (the first course) and put it in the water too many times, and I followed up on the next hole with an eagle (!) and ended up beating him by a stroke. Yeah I know almost nothing about golf that hasn't been taught to me by video games.
But anyway, as far as playability goes, if you can stand the kawaii ^___________^-ness of it, it's really quite solid. I can't speak too much for the AI other than what's been said already, as most of my experience with it has been multiplayer. The main reason I've not played it much is my current television setup isn't ideal for most 'stand up and play' wii games, which I will hopefully have rectified before too long.
I can't wait to unlock Ryu Hayabusa and Mighty Bomb-Jack

So is the music as ^__________^ as everything else? How's the putting mechanic compared to, say, Wii Sports?

Japanese and Korean golf games are saturated with elevator music. It's oddly soothing. I play a lot of Hot Shots Golf Open Tee on PSP and the music is poppy, light and instantly forgettable.
I might have to run down and see if I can get a used copy of Super Swing Golf 2 to try it out; I really did like SSG1 and in retrospect I'm not sure why I traded it off. I was really hoping (especially because it's a port of the online Pangya Golf) for online play, but oh well. Thanks for the input, guys! If I get it I'll report back with impressions.
You know some Nintendo employee, somewhere, has pitched "Mario Blades of Steel".

I liked Wii Sports Golf so much that I went out and bought SSG1, looking for a more complete golf experience. I like the game and it was well worth the $17 I paid for a used copy, but I find I enjoy the simpler mechanics of Wii Sports better.
What I really want is just Wii Sports Golf with more courses and better club selection.

I finally bought Super swing golf 1 and I really like it. Except when it pulls some sort of bullshit on me. The whole furthest person swings gets quite annoying. Best ball is for teams, not single play. The AI is really erratic. Sometimes they make OMFG shots. I just had an AI hit the ball backwards and then sink an amazing shot. Needless to say this pissed me off. No one in their right mind on a golf course would hit away from the hole.(I guess rare circumstances maybe)
But, ya. Oh and the greens? did meteors hit around each of the holes? I swear the ramped up the difficulty with that too. Finally the power gauging system is full of lies and deceit.
After the bad points, the game really does shine. It does feel much more like real golf then wii golf did. Some of the shots are really amusing and the characters? uh-- I understand why that one guy was uncomfortable playing around his wife. I would feel uncomfortable too.
I just want a golf game on the Wii *online*. It's frickin 2008 FFS.
This is wild speculation. However, If they don't put in super swing 2 I will be very pissed and dissapointed (more angry then dissapointed) I mean its a freaking golf game. Its not like netcode is a high priority on something like that.

I might have to run down and see if I can get a used copy of Super Swing Golf 2 to try it out; I really did like SSG1 and in retrospect I'm not sure why I traded it off. I was really hoping (especially because it's a port of the online Pangya Golf) for online play, but oh well. Thanks for the input, guys! If I get it I'll report back with impressions.
Sega Bass Fishing Wii
they need to remake blades of steel for the Wii.
You know some Nintendo employee, somewhere, has pitched "Mario Blades of Steel".

I sure hope so. Given what I saw in super mario galaxy, there isn't any valid reason for there NOT to be a ice hockey game.
This is wild speculation. However, If they don't put in super swing 2 I will be very pissed and dissapointed (more angry then dissapointed) I mean its a freaking golf game. Its not like netcode is a high priority on something like that.
