I'm having some trouble finding a straight answer for this online (big surprise) so I'm wondering if anyone here knows for sure: what headsets work with PS3? I've heard wildly varying accounts that ALL Bluetooth ones work, only a few select brands do, only Logitech USB sets work, NO USB sets work, it depends on the game, etc.
Ideally I'd find an inexpensive-yet-quality USB headset, as they tend to be cheaper than Bluetooth - that, and I don't need wireless that badly as my game chair is about three feet from my PS3.
Every USB headset I know of works, though I guess if it has some sort of 'transmit' button or something it won't. I have heard of some trouble getting some bluetooth ones to work smoothly, but after some trouble every one I know of has worked.
My recommendations:
-Logitech USB headset, such as the one that came packaged with SOCOM 1. Works just dandy and is what I use half the time.
-Jabra or Plantronics bluetooth. In my experience Plantronics work really well. I have heard many good things about the various Jabra models, the BT125 that comes with the retail version of Warhawk works fine and my personal BT160 works very well.
You need to go through the System>Accessory Settings>Audio Device Settings bit to set things up. Select input/output device and mic sensitivity level from there, then go into your game. From there it should work.
If you are using a bluetooth you will need to pair it to the system prior to that using the 'Register Bluetooth Device' option, this involves putting the device into 'search' mode (read the manual) and putting in the access key in the PS3. (Almost always 0000)
Also FWIW the Rock Band mic works really well as an input, and allows you to set your output to your TV. I do this sometimes for chats.
This seriously defeats the entire purpose of having Bluetooth compatibility but I wish they'd just make a damn headset like the old Logitech one without the wires. It kicked ass but I'll be damned if I go back to those blasted wires again.
I use some hells expensive Plantronics and it's proof that money doesn't ensure quality. It sags in my ear, it doesn't feel comfortable, it's seemingly simple one-button on/off is complicated...
But to answer your question - all USB headsets and all Bluetooth headsets work. I bet you've heard some Bluetooth headsets don't work because some take some setting up to do, and I bet some people that tell you that USB doesn't work don't realize they need to set their console to the "USB Headset" option instead of the "Bluetooth Headset" option.

I'll bet the audio quality is good, though, right? That's why I recommend them. If you want a bluetooth mic, find one that fits your ear well and try it.
People in my clan have had very mixed reviews of the Motorola headsets, some have great experiences and some have awful ones. Of the same models. Which is why I don't recommend those.
So, basically, avoid any headsets with a 'transmit' button? Excellent, this is just what I was looking for. I'll head over to the mall after work to see what I can find! Thanks guys!
