While I think Sony is a "Lock" for third place this gen. Those are solid numbers for the brand. At least as good as the Gamecube last gen.

The HW numbers are all each a bit under predictions it seems.

I'm less surprised by the 360 and Wii numbers being lower than expected than I am by the PS3 numbers. 800k is pretty low for December NPD.

Yup, I don't see any surprises, although maybe I'm missing something here.

I'm amazed that the DS continues to do so well, not because it doesn't deserve it or anything, but I'd figure everyone already has one! :P

Also, although the PS3 hardware sales were decent I guess, having nothing in the top 10 software totals certainly must hurt. I wonder how far down games like Uncharted, Ratchet, UT3, CoD4 and AC were for the PS3.

4 out of every 5 Wii purchases resulted in a purchase of Wii Play. I recognize it's just a controller plus a $10 game, but still, an 80% attach rate is nuts.

Dissapointed by the PS3 numbers, but they're not bad considering the PS3 is still trying to break into the US market. Add on decent Japan numbers for the season with whatever Europe did and it looks to be a good Christmas season.

And man, will the PS2 ever die? I wouldnt be surprised if it still got very good sales in Dec '08.

It's amazing that CoD4 360 sold nearly 1.5 million and the PS3 version doesn't even get on the top 10. I'm curious to see where it lies; the disparity seems greater than the split from last month, though I don't remember what it was.

I'm in desperate need to see some Rock Band numbers, and the 360 version of GH3 popped back on the charts. I'm assuming the Wii versions are still in rare supply and even moreso now due to fixing the mono problem.

It outsold the year sales.. in a single 5 week period.. something it took the other to do in a 12 month period.. (for the US)

as in, the DS sold ~2.5 in December; the PS3 sold ~2.5M in Jan-December. That's what's  about.

And to be honest, I am quite blown away by the games that are coming out for it.
If you asked me a year or so ago if I believed that there would be real RPGs (even Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest) on it, complete with god damn FMV and in-game cutscenes and voice acting, I would have laughed in your face and played Kirby with my niece.

So, Slash is gone now, and won't be able to answer this question, but what are these November numbers? Those aren't the November NPD figures, so what are they?

For comparison, the November NPDs, shamelessly cribbed from the last thread:

    PlayStation 2 -- 496,000
    PlayStation 3 -- 466,000
    PlayStation Portable -- 567,000
    Xbox 360 -- 770,000

By my rough, in-my-head calculations, the 360 roughly has 2x the userbase as the PS3. So assuming a roughly equal attach rate, the PS3 sales should be around 750k, which means it should have shown up towards the latter half of the top 10. But it's not there. I'm guessing it's more around the 10-15 mark then. If not ... then that's not a good sign for Sony.

I'd also love to see Rock Band numbers. Since they are supply and price constrained, it's obviously not going to be huge numbers, but it should still be decent. And if you multiply price by the sales volumes ... the revenue numbers should be very impressive.

you, sir, sound like a man who would excel in the field of graph production.

i kid, i kid. 2008 is definitely ps3's time to shine. but a sales spike is never really indicative of any kind of shift in the market. they happen all the time and usually die down with little fanfare. It's especially unlikely in this case since the numbers are still so much lower than the competition. Interest in the ps3 is definitely rising, I'll give you that. What matters now is whether that interest continues to grow at a steady pace.

80% attach rate is also an exaggeration as the Wii was released in '06 and I imagine that a significant portion of those WiiPlay sales were to people who owned Wiis prior to 2007.
