Music Suggestion for my Sister

My sister and I usually get each other CDs for our respective birthdays - just outside the envelope of our tastes so we get to appriciate new stuff.

She's into alternative indie type stuff - think Decemberists more than Bright Eyes. Any suggestions for mostly unheard of music?

No indie rocker would be complete without Neutral Milk Hotel

    Also maybe Limbeck or Sherwood

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is pretty much one of the best indie rock albums ever...at least on my list.

Death Cab For Cutie, Islands, The Unicorns, The Shins, The Mountain Goats, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

If she's into female vocalists and you're feeling risky, she might dig El Perro Del Mar, Camera Obscura, or The Pippettes.

The Mountain Goats. An album like All Hail West Texas or Full Force Galesburg.

Man, The Mountain Goats. Oh man. I've got their discography and then I shacked up with this girl who said they were her favorite band. And now their discography sits and collects dust. She liked to try and sing.

Yes, Mountain Goats. Get Lonely is a good album but I wouldn't recommend actually giving it to someone. The above suggestions are more apt.

I don't even think it's a matter of opinion anymore. Shit's so good.

I'd recommend Sufjan Steven's Illinois, or LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver. Maybe Figurines' Skeleton. Clap your hands say Yeah's s/t is pretty much a must-have if she doesn't already own it.

    Nick Cave - Murder Ballads

I don't care anymore, I am going to have to recommend Nick Cave in every music thread I encounter on The Internets.

Nick Cave, everything before 2003, before he found Jesus.

    Oh what an awesome thread

If she's a Decemberists person, check out Beirut, The Unicorns, Sufjan Stevens, Built to Spill, Cloud Cult, The New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, Sea Wolf....

If you're trying to show her 'new' stuff, and she likes the Decemberists (I'm pretty much the biggest Decemberists nerd ever), I'm sure she's heard of DCFC and the Postal Service- Meloy and Gibbard toured together. Sufjan, CYHSY, NMH, these are all relatively known in the sense that I gather she'd probably know them if she knows the Decemberists.

Even so, I'd agree with the NMH rec. for two reasons:

a.) They are, indeed, magnificent. Without question, go for ItAOtS.
b.) Early Decemberists and Tarkio, Meloy's previous band, were oft' compared to NMH because of the similar stylings of Meloy and Jeff Magnum, NMH's frontman.

I very much approve of your taste in melodic amalgamations of sound and silence. Let's have a baby and name it clef.

Holland, 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel is pretty much sex in audio form.

No, better. Get that already mentioned album. Unless she has it, which might be likely depending on her nerdom.

Oh my god let's do it.

Also, if you're concerned about her knowing about a band, Islands, Beirut, Sea Wolf and Cloud Cult are pretty good bets for her not to know them.
