mouse problem on laptop

I own a Toshiba Portege 4000 I bought in like 2001. The mouse in it seems to be very unstable. It'll keep jiggling about in a very irritating manner and i can't click on links etc. At first I thought it was the mouse I was using, but I unplugged it and the problem still occurs.

This is very irregular and happens in intervals. Sometimes it will be completely out of control and sometimes it will jsut drift slowly in one direction. So what the hell? What does this mean? I think I need to buy a new laptop anyway, but still I'm curios as to what's going on.

Have you tried disabling the built in "nipple" mouse? It could definitely cause the drifting, and if one of the buttons on the actual laptop is stuck you wouldn't be able to use the corresponding button on an external mouse.

How do I disable it? Control panel somewhere? I'm a little computer illiterate.

I'm sure it varies from model to model. On the laptop I'm on now you just go to control panel>mouse and the first tab has an option to enable/disable the touchpad and enable/disable the buttons. If you don't see anything there I would check the bios, but it really should just be in the control panel. You might also have a function key (like FN+F5 or something) that disables the mouse.

If there is no place to disable it in the Mouse control panel, you should be able to turn it off by finding it in the Device Manager. Right click on it and select Disable.
