This year we saw some crazy shit. Voodoo building a stupidly expensive computer and ending up selling their company to Dell. We also saw a mineral oil-cooled comp. These are some of the rigs and screensetups i want to play on in 2008:
Depends how well sealed it is. Looking at the photo, the hard drive does not appear to be submerged with the rest of the machine.
What worries me is that the CPU, graphics card, and PSU all seem to have normal fan driven coolers. They should work submerged in oil, but I think the relative density of oil as opposed to air would put a hell of a lot of strain on the fans. I wonder how much protection there is against heat build up if a fan were to fail.
Yeah but seriously, mineral oil cooling has been around for a while, I remember reading about it years ago. It's my understanding that cooled mineral oil gets kind of thick, though, so the comment made earlier about the fans makes me wonder just hpow long they'd hold up.
Also it's going to be rad seeing those machines in a few years. Imagine if your neighbor had a Pentium 2 overclocked to 700MHz with mineral oil cooling.
Bingo. I remember reading the step-by-step they made when they were putting it together. It took them a few jugs of mineral oil to fill that aquarium.
Got a link? I'm wondering if they're actually cooling the oil in any way, or just relying on it's heat capacity and mass to keep the temperature under control.
If it does need active cooling, it seems like careful placement of radiator intakes and outlets would be required to avoid any dead spots.
I know nothing about dipping rigs/computers in liquid but won't that affect the hard drive? Excuse my ignorance.
Harddrives use cushions of air to minimize friction, if you use oil instead it will press down the reading/writing arm (head) & scratch the platters. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harddrive has decent pictures).

But those cushions are "in" the drive, right? This looks like the drive is hanging out in oil.
Also: This website doesn't have nearly enough information about any of these pictures.

So solid state drives will resolve this issue right?
Thanks for the link Cymoro, I got that pic of the net and couldn't find the site.
p.s. I still don't get why one of the pics has 3 keyboards to it ... I guess that setup would suck for games. Also wtf is that thing sticking out out of the back left on the last pic, looks like a fan but i'm not sure. u have to click on the pic to expand it.

som might run shittier than others, does anyone know what that 1st pic is?
Did we see some crazy shit this year? Cause all I saw in the those pics was the same clear-acrylic, UV sensitive water piping boring shit we've been seeing for the past half a decade.
(And the first pic is just a leaf/snow blower pointed at a "rig" without a case)
Wow, you want to play on those? The only one even a little bit interesting was the one with 6 screens, but really, short of flight simulator, what good is it?
STOP USING THE WORD "RIG" TO DESCRIBE A COMPUTER, YOU LOOK RIDICULOUS!
While it makes me think of commercial trucking and laugh, it's far from an incorrect usage.
Rig
noun
1 the particular way in which a sailboat's masts, sails, and rigging are arranged : the yacht will emerge from the yard with her original rig.
• the sail, mast, and boom of a sailboard.
2 an apparatus, device, or piece of equipment designed for a particular purpose : a lighting rig.
• an oil rig or drilling rig.
• (in CB and shortwave radio) a transmitter and receiver.
• a particular type of construction for fishing tackle that bears the bait and hook.
3 a person's costume, outfit, or style of dress : the rig of the Army Air Corps.
4 a tractor-trailer.
• another type of vehicle, such as a horse-drawn carriage.

You could use some sort of virtual machine setup so you could run six copies of World of Warcraft and start your own guild of goldfarmers.
Or you could view six different webpages at once.
Or you could watch six different porn videos at once. That's what I'd do.

Yeah, if we're getting into "what does your dream PC case look like?", I'm going to head off into the ultraviolet end of the freak spectrum and ask for something like this:

I stand corrected. although closing porn windows when my wife walks in while spanking it is hard enough, but closing six? I might as well unplug it. (the computer that is.)
indeed, the wood box is a work of art. has anyone seen the half-life 2 custom? its pretty sweet, just not this year. http://members.home.nl/gis/
Lawndart, is that like related to anything? Was it inspired by someplace Rapturious maybe?
(that even a word?)
It's just generic steampunk, I think. Everyone on the internet seems to be in love with the style, but it doesn't do much for me. Usually, I see it and think of how victorian-style woodwork needs to be left to the pros.

I'll agree that Steampunk's popularity is on the upswing. And I'll agree that real victorian-style stuff had both a pleasing form as well as function.
I've always really liked steampunk. There isn't nearly enough steampunk in any form of media.

Not to be a tool, but can I propose the 360 and PS3 as awesome rigs? Nothing beats having a rig that you don't have to fiddle with or have crash because a couple components don't like each other. Not to mention the prices aren't bad either.
JOKING! I'm fully aware that consoles and gaming rigs are two entirely different ballgames. I'm just jealous that I don't have 1000+ dollars to drop on a really good PC.

I know, I know, I'm still a tool.
I was under the understanding that 360 DVDs and the 360 DVD Drive hate each other, but I could be miss informed.

Because you have a special needs kid as your avatar with the word "NOOB!" on it?
you need a sig with a computer in it.
I wonder how many computers he trashed doing this
Well, that particular photo was by a company that does custom PC's, so I don't know.
Presumably the reason for using mineral oil is that it's non-conductive.

It did get pretty hot at times, but running bubbles cooled it down.
