I'm so on the fence with Trauma Center. I want one but I don't know where to start. There's no interconnecting plotline is there? I just kind of want to cut people up.
I don't think so -- I'm still pretty early in on New Blood (the second Wii game) but it's got an all-new cast. I'd say start with Second Opinion on Wii as it can likely be had for cheap nowadays. And the games are fucking awesome; it's a shame that I haven't played much of New Blood, since I was one of the forum's greatest proponents of it, but I've been buried under so many games from November.
I hear you man, I'm still on Virmire in Mass Effect and haven't finished Assassin's Creed, Zack and Wiki, or Umbrella Chronicles. Thanks for the tip though, I'll find Second Opinion.
Isn't New Blood out now? As the first one is just a rehash of the DS one, I'd probably grab NB.

I'd rather pay $30 for something I'm not sure if I'll enjoy than $50.
Anyone not mentioning No More Heroes is dead to me.
DEAD TO ME.
It's a game that should be on any list. Including lists of "Things to play on PS3" or "How to learn guitar" the first item should be "Wii+No More Heroes"
He's big on Adventure/Puzzle. I saw the Fire Emblem, gamespot kinda slagged it tho he missed out on all the GBA fire emblems so I was kinda keen on picking it up. Any opinions on it?
Gamespot is full of shit. Most complaints directed at Fire Emblem are that it's too strategic in gameplay, or that it's too traditional, or that it doesn't use the Wii control features enough. Wii features? Give me a break. This title doesn't need it and it doesn't suffer for lack of waggle.

NB is out now, but you can find SO for cheaper. It didn't sound like he had played the DS version, which is another pull for Second Opinion. It's far more than a rehash/port, IMO, and it feels different enough to not just be a retread of the DS version, especially because the controls are drastically different and there are three levels of difficulty to choose from. A few of the missions are changed and the entire last chapter is changed from the Final Sin nonsense to brand-new operations, plus there are a number of exclusive operations that are more akin to the stuff in New Blood.
This was addressed above, but the Wii doesn't have too many of the preferred genres in the OP -- in terms of general recommendations, besides Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Play for the controller I'd say pick up Mario Strikers Charged (think "Mario Kart approach to soccer/hockey").

Lunker beat me to it, but I just wanted to stress that TS:SO isn't a port, it's a fantastic remake. The vastly improved controls would be improvement enough, but they also threw in improved visuals, multiple difficulty levels, reworked levels, and brand new levels (which tend to be noticeably cooler than the levels in the DS game). There's also quite a bit more plot.

I think there's enough other problems with Fire Emblem though. Both my friends who got it, who really like SRPGs, were not enjoying it at all.

Fair enough. But some criticisms just don't make sense. Like.. "Not enough waggle."

Well obviously. "Not Enough Waggle" is never a good criticism.
I'm just saying Fire Emblem isn't for everyone, even if they like SRPGs.
Keep in mind that the Wii does play GameCube games (and requires a GameCube controller to do it), so you can probably go raid your local EBGameStop and pick up a bunch of stuff.
If he has a girlfriend I would recommend Big Brain Academy you even get an extra mote with it. I cannot count the hours I have played that game trying for platinum medals. It's not an amazing game but it's fun if puzzles are his thang.

Not having waggle for the menus is kind of retarded. You have to manually move up and down to select stuff instead of just pointing at it. Seems to me like they were too lazy to include the most basic functionality and I'd call that a fair criticism.
It's been a while since I played it, but I can't recall any instance where you use the wiimote for aiming / navigating / waggling / whatever you call it in FE:RD. It's basically a Gamecube game released under the guise of a Wii game and I'd wager it was originally developed with the GC in mind, building on the GC Path of Radiance. Is it still a good game? Ya. Does it make it alright that they just took their Gamecube game, made it run on the Wii and didnt bother to add any new control features whatsoever? No. Seriously, they couldnt take 5 minutes and do up some simple menu navigating with the Wiimote sensor? There are lots of parts in the game where I wished theyd just let me do things with the Wiimote and it didnt, like basic unit selection. So, I'm going to agree with the not enough waggle comment and it is a very valid complaint.
The main criticism with Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn that most people have is that Micaiah's group has mostly terrible growths except for a few characters. This, in turn, makes the beginning part of the game difficult. After that, you start getting characters that can actually dodge hits once and a while.
Other than that, it's generally improved over the Gamecube one in every way. A better story that is paced better, and some of the best attack animations the series have ever seen to name a few.

Don't forget to also get that Wii cable that helps you view in Progressive Scan.
You can get them very cheap from monoprice.com
I bought several of these and gave them away as gifts friends who have Wiis and HD but don't realize they need that cable.
Progressive....scan?
Mode?
Whatever it is called. I'm no tv-phile.
The view from my Wii is a hell of a lot sharper with this cable.
It's not HD, but it's sharper than not having the cable.

On that note definitely nab Wii Play for the extra controller, worth it. You can find some decent games on the cheap, as well, in the sub $20 range.
Recommended:
Metal Slug Anthology
Ghost Squad
Cooking Mama
DBZ Budokai 2
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Possibly not in your genre list but good titles nonetheless.
In the usual price range of titles I can recommend:
Metroid Prime 3
SUPER MARIO GALAXY
WarioWare Smooth Moves
Zelda
Also nab a Wii point card for VC games. There is no shortage of games on there that anyone can find enjoyable.
PS: If you really want to be kick ass, pre-pay/order Smash Bros!
Wii U - 'Nocero'
XBox ID - therealmasume
PS4 ID - realmasume

Whoooops
I've been up for a while.
Check out the Ultimate GameCube Game Thread for recommendations.
The story makes a lot more sense, Path of Radiance is easier to get into, and the data transfer is a really awesome feature.
I'll second Zack & Wiki, and Super Paper Mario (or Thousand Year Door, which is more jrpg-esque)
Also Zelda, Galaxy, Batallion Wars, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is supposed to be half-decent.
If he has internet, be sure to inform him of things like Breath of Fire II, Paper Mario, and Landstalker available on the Virtual Console.

Once again, it depends on the game. If the game needs one Wiimote and one Nunchuk per player, then yes you'll need another nunchuk.
