I accidentally dragged "GlobalSerif.CompositeFont" (to the desktop) out of the Fonts folder in the Windows directory (Windows XP Pro 32bit), and now I'm unable to drag it back.

How do I get it back? Its buddies Global Monospace and Global Sans Serif etc are still in there. Arggg

I've tried copying the same file from another computer and get the same result.

In the fonts folder go to

File -> install new font -> Point the browser to the file on your desktop -> ok (and make sure "copy file to fonts folder" is ticked)

tried that. won't even see it on the desktop, likely for the same reasons it wont install by dragging it onto it

have you tried a quick reboot before doing that? Sometimes it clears up stuff like this.

Yes. The issue has existed over a couple days now.

I should also say nothing whatsoever was done to the file except drag it from the folder. It was not edited or renamed or changed in any way.

at a guess I'd say there's a wonky registry entry somewhere, but I have no idea which part of the registry holds that stuff so I should shut up. One of those 'hack the shit out of windows to make it work like it should' sites might help you learn your way around though, if you're willing to take a risk. Make backups!

Those composite fonts are installed by WPF when you install .NET 3.0 and up. It also seems that they have to be installed using the appropriate installer, rather than the standard methods.

As far as I know those files have to be installed using a specific installer which came with them - in this case the one built into the WPF installer - which you probably installed as part of Visual studio or .NET

    So, three ideas..

    1. Check add/remove and see if you have .NET 3.0 or 3.5 installed - if so try the repair option. Chances are it may overlook the fonts installed, but we can always hope otherwise.

    2. System restore - Quick and cheap, but should undo the reg changes that moving the file has caused.

    3. Reinstall .NET 3.0 (or 3.5). Completely overkill just to restore some fonts, but as far as I know there is no separate installer for the fonts alone.

At least one of those should be worth a shot, otherwise you'll need someone whos more familliar with the format than I am.

I could mess with the .net install/reinstall.

System restore means far more work getting back to where I am now compared to that.

lol holeeeeee shit that was easy and a strange fix

I just went to add/remove, clicked on the show updates at the top, went down to .net 3.0 service pack one, and hit "change" next to the remove, and after a couple seconds after having seemingly done nothing... I checked my fonts folder and the font is back and good as new.

so... that's neat! thanks for guiding the way

Well, at least you got to a solution in the end.
