Otherworld's vocals I didn't find bad at all, and certainely a fuckload better than that dude-who-sings-the-stuff-for-Raining-Bloow-wannabe from the original. :x Is Blue Sky or whatever that one I heard a sample for on Wikipedia really that bad in that department?
I like the vocal pieces that were done for Crystal Chronicles. The boss theme was also very well done.
Final Fantasy IX's OST was mixed. There are some painful songs in there like "Just Over Those Hills" and "Fairy Battle," but there was also all the awesome character themes. Zidane, Kuja, and Freija had especially good ones. It's disappointing that the Black Mages chose "Final Battle" to remix when the true swan song of FF IX is "Messenger of Destruction."
Final Fantasy VIII has one of the best soundtracks ever. There's only one or two songs out of 73 that I dislike. Uematsu's best.
FF7's OST still gives me goosebumps. Just like the game, it's fantastic but somewhat aged.
I, personally, get embarrassed if anyone else hears me listening to a Black Mages song and the chick starts singing the unintelligible lyrics to Otherworld or the goofy opera guy kicks in. I don't particularly mind them, but I think the soundtrack could have been just as good or better without them (see The Black Mages I). And it would greatly reduce my gamer nerd shame for listening to them.

It's funny - I think the vocals of the Black Mages version murdered it. Admittedly, the vocals from the original wouldn't have worked with their take on it either.
FFIX has easily one of my favorite soundtracks of any game, but I think a greater part of that is nostalgia than in a lot of other cases, as it's also my favorite game in the series. (I agree with Tonberry about Messenger of Destruction, though I'd also love to see what they could do with You're Not Alone) For whatever reason, other than a few select tracks, the music in VIII never really stood out to me. With the praise it's getting here, I may have to give it another listen.
I sorta wish that some of the songs were more high profile. I'm a pretty religious listener when it comes to video game music, but some of these are from out of left field. The bombing mission? I mean...eh, out of that ost, there's a ton of other tracks that I would pick over that.
I love a lot of FFVIII's soundtrack, but there are certainly quite a few songs that I will skip past when they start playing. Heresy, for one, pisses me off.

I can handle Otherworld, but oh god, when that Mr. Magoo guy or whatever starts busting out his opera vocals, I feel embarrassed even when I'm completely alone.
To be fair, having seen him in the video, Mr Goo is a little more awesome, in a... embarassingly awesome way.
Still, no vocal tracks in this. Except the Opera, which obviously has professional orchestra opera singers.
The FF3 track wasn't leaked, by the way - it was done for the FF3 DS album last year, and they're just putting it on this album also. It's probably remastered over the one readily downloadable online.

Yeah, I agree. The bombing mission was done quite well in the orchestrated versions, and it just doesn't quite sound the same with the fake strings. And there's plenty of other battle/fast paced music that would work well with their style (see Voices of the Lifestream for instance)
Have you ever heard the full orchestra version? There's been a few - English, Japanese, Latin - all absolutely amazing.
This one I hope will be the definitive one.
Yes, and you are absolutly correct. I suppose it would be more accurate to say I love each and every version of this song, including the MIDI one, which has a special place in my heart.
Also, if they include Celes' Theme, since Aria di Mezzo Carattere is a riff (or whatever the musical term is) on it, I will be the happiest man alive.
Edit: Dancing Mad is on the first CD and it is so good oh god go buy the cd right the hell now
The Italian version of the Aria de Mezzo Carrettere from the FFVI Grande Finale CD was the best version I've heard yet. I'm very excited to hear the BM take on that amazing song.
Yeah, this is absolutely amazing. The Opera in particular is one of the greatest things I've ever heard.
Darkness and Starlight (the opera song, not the album itself) is not so much a song as an experience.
I really want to play the opera scene in FFVI again after hearing it, that was one of the best moments of an already fantastic game.
That alone makes this a bought'd. I love the MIDI opera scene with synth voices, I expect multiple aural orgasms from this.
You should check out the Opera Scene piece from Orchestral Game Concert 4. It's 23 minutes, going through the entire opera and ending with Grand Finale, the music that plays when you fight Ultros. It's excellent, despite the vocals being Japanese.
