Meh whatever. I don't think Konami has much to fear about MGS4 selling well. I'll leave Unco to fill us in on anything else related to that though.
I think the main worry would be that GTA4 is scheduled to come out on April 29th which is right in the middle of the 3 month period that MGS4 is scheduled to come out. Wasn't there a lot of talk back when MGS3 was released that its relatively disappointing sales may have been due to GTA?
Not just due to GTA, but to the typical onslaught of holiday releases around that time.
Yeah, on other systems there was Halo 2 and Half-Life 2, among others.
And WoW.
That was a devastating Christmas for people's wallets
Wow, your right.
Jesus, that must have been one of the best Christmas in awhile for gaming.

Yeah, I was one of the many people that was interested in MGS3, but ended up not buying or even playing it later. I was swamped with all the other games that came out, and by the time I was ready for it, I just wasn't excited about the game anymore.
That's undoubtedly hurt my anticipation for MGS4. Sure, it looks good, but once I miss a game in a franchise, it's often hard for me to get back into it. (It also doesn't help that I'd have to finally buy a PS3 in order to play it) Coincidentally, I feel the same way about DMC4. I enjoyed the first one, thought the second sucked (like most people), and skipped the third. I'm not terribly excited about DMC4.
I'm very interested in seeing what the MGS4 sales numbers will be, because of all this. I can definitely see it swing either way: a franchise that's on its way down (which is, honestly, pretty common these days), or one that a lot of people are excited about because of its status as a console "next-gen" exclusive.
I remember that holiday season. It was both glorious and horrible. Way too much came out and inevitably things got lost in the onslaught. It's the reason I've gotten a chuckle out of the "OMG too much is coming out!" threads that pop up every year leading up to the holiday season.
I just had another thought. If the PS3 is going to turn things around don't they need a better advertising campaign?
Whenever I'm watching something on TV I see a lot of those PS3 as a tentacle monster ads.
But didn't they have a lot of those ads for R&C, Uncharted, Lair, etc.? Isn't it already established that those ads aren't going to move even excellent games?
On the other hand the only ad for a game that has caught my attention lately was the Gears of War commercial. That one had me half way out the door before I reconvienced myself that I didn't really need a console.

Yeah that's the part I don't get. It seems like from the start Sony has been advertising the console itself.
LOOK AT IT! IT LEVITATES!!
And even the tentacle one...the game snippets are so short you don't even know what you're seeing the first time around. It seems to be all about the PS3 itself and how it's a squid now. What does that result in? People buying the PS3 as a Blu Ray player. No wonder the attach rate is so low.
They should go back to pushing their good exclusives, hard. Uncharted, Warhawk, R&C, etc. Most people don't go "Hey, I'm gonna go buy a PS3 because it's Sony's gift to the world!" out of the blue. They buy a console initially because there's a game on it they want to play and it's exclusive. Show people enough of these and the consoles will sell.

Or we can uh..just wait until MGS4 and FFXIII.
It's like whenever Sony said something like the PS3 will sell X million even with no games and everyone's response was "lolsony", the Sony marketing people heard that and said: "Hey! I like it. Lets roll with that idea. Ok, who is getting lunch?"

I still see them doing the commercial that shows all the exclusives ... I actually thought that was the first decent PS3 commercial they've had in awhile (ever).

I dunno, I kinda liked the one with the clowns. Not because I think it encouraged people to buy a PS3 or anything, I just found it amusing.

Those are better than the earlier ads. I'm just saying that they don't awaken any desire to own those games or a PS3 in me and perhaps more important: they didn't seem to suceed in selling Uncharted R&C, etc. In particular it was the multi-platform gams that sold best on the PS3 this Christmass season.
I'd guess the problem is that they still feature the PS3 too much, don't give each game enough time to make any impact and finally they are all the same with different game footage spliced in so none of them stand out.

Let's look at Xbox 360 advertising. How many game commercials have you seen that prominently feature the console itself? I can think of one, with the random people in a city gathering around one in the street and playing Guitar Hero. The rest of the commercials aren't really for the 360, they're for games. There's the aforementioned GoW commercial and more recently the Mass Effect commercials.
I've seen one PS3 commercial that only featured a game, and that was for Uncharted. The rest prominently feature the PS3 as some kind of technological wunderkind.

You don't remember the 360 commercial in 2006 with all the game boxes flying and turning into a giant xbox 360?
EDIT: Or all the "jump in" commercials?
EDIT DOS: Or what about the one where the dude gets married and all his friend are bummed, until they get him an xbox 360 and Xbox live as a wedding gift, and the commercial ends with them all playing some game online, together again.
Or the one where everyone was relying on the dude in some game online, talking to him, and he ends up fucking everyone up and you see he's gone away from the controller.
there are lots of 360 commercials which don't concentrate on games, but rather the system.

Its prestige seems to be shrinking inversely to Halo's growth.

Everything that was wrong in MGS2 is right in MGS3.
