Alot of Wii games get put on the PS2 since they are easier to develop for, and seem to have the same graphics for game to game (The Wii is like, two gamecubes taped together I know, but these developers don't give a shit).
Also, ports from PSP like that Silent Hill prequel, GoW: CoO, and Rachet and Clank: SM.
I think Sony has every possibility, thanks mostly to Metal Gear and Final Fantasy, of outselling the 360 this year. However, I don't think they have even the most minute of chances to outsell the 360 by 6 million units. So will Sony gain on the 360? Every possibility and, IMO, very likely. Will they eclipse the 360? No.
The little console that could will continue to outsell both of 'em though.

Yeah, 2008 will be a good year for the PS3, there are a hand full of decent games up and coming, but at the moment I'm finding myself playing my 360 more.
The only games I keep coming back to are Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Unchartered at the moment, so I hope the gap is filled so it doesn't just collect dust on my coffee table.
Great big new game releases are trickling away for the PS2. Yes it will continue to get new iterations of Madden, as well as Guitar Hero, DDR, and maybe Rock Band. But most likely, the big franchises will move on; and in fact, arguably have. Grand Theft Auto, Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Devil May Cry, Ace Combat, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Final Fantasy, Ratchet and Clank, Ueda's next games, Dragon Quest, Splinter Cell, Call of Duty, whatever. These are all moving on from the PS2. Secondly, the new franchises are all being announced for the current gen. Not the PS2.
The PS2 will get major casual stuff like rhythm games and new Madden iterations. Meanwhile, new franchises as well as big existing franchises will and have essentially moved on. And even assuming the PS2 continues to get the newer Guitar Heroes or Maddens, we all know how significantly better these games tend to be on the newer systems anyway.

There's one exception to that so far, and I'm just as stunned as anyone: supposedly they're still doing another Persona for the PS2, but I think I'll believe it when I see it.
Those three exclusives aren't exactly blockbusters. Given the nature of those multiplatform releases though, expect them to sell better on the 360 in all regions. Yes, even Japan. Just look at AC6 for proof.
Lost Odyssey could be a surprise hit (seriously, Microsoft has been hyping it up for over a year and I can't be the only one who has been waiting for a top notch mature next gen JRPG), but my main point was that the 360 is almost continually getting exclusives, both big and small. Sure, the PS3 has a few big exclusives, but it lacks the more constant flow of games that its competitors are getting.
I'd wager that it'll be a better year for Sony, but I'd say that at this point the relative console positions are stratified pretty solidly, especially in the US of A. In Europe it'll be better, but in Japan, until the release of FFXIII, things will be pretty much the same I'd think and in the USA it'll be business as usual.
I may or may not spring for a PS3 this year. The games I wanted (Uncharted, R&C) are already out. MGS4 interests me though honestly with all the shit they're cramming in (Meryl, EVA, Vamp, etc.), I think it may be pure shit. I may just wait until FFXIII.
...While I'm on the subject of mass market, why do we think that their perception of the PS3 is suddenly going to change? The system is still in the 500-600 dollar range. No one will want to buy the tard packs in the same way no one wants to buy the cheap 360 with gutted features. The Sony PR machine is still a mess. ...
Hate to be nit-picky, but the PS3 is now 400-500. The "tard" pack (40 gig, I'm presuming?) sold very well, and is only marginally more expensive than a comparable 360 (compare it to a premium). I was just as lolsony as everyone when they dropped BC for the 40 gig, but it doesn't appear that many people care (aside from me, I guess).
I agree with some of what you said, and disagree with some. But saying that the system is still in the 500-600 range is just wrong -- almost purposefully wrong. As in, you would have to have been purposely avoiding news about the PS3 price drop to say/believe that. And, if that's the case (not that there's anything wrong with that), why would you post in a thread about the PS3?
This seems to really set people off. I shouldn't have posted at all? Really?
Are people so absorbed in this system war bullshit that they assume everyone has an agenda?
The price is a major issue with the PS3. When Sony released the $400 SKU PS3 (Is that a perfectly inoffensive title?) the sales increased some, granted. However it didn't increase enough. PS3s are still lying around in stores. If the PS3 is such a value at $600 then why didn't a price drop cause the sales to explode? Their are the issues I listed before and then there is my theory that the mass market dislikes multiple SKUs, especially ones that take features out, no matter how minute the features are.
Edit: And I can't stick around for the ensuing shitstorm but I can't delete all my posts anymore so you'll just have to deal with it.
And does anyone really think FF13 is coming out this year? There was like a 5 year gap between FFX & FFXII (11 doesn't count since it's a MMORPG) and that was on a system that Square was familiar with.

Maybe in Japan. Like, in December.
There's no way in hell that the US would see FFXIII this year. We should all remember how long it takes S-E to do all the translation and localization. We're definitely talking 2009 for the US. (And ironically, that's probably when I'll get a PS3! I my JRPGs)
If the PS3 hits the $300 range by the time FFXIII comes out(which is highly probable), then it's highly probable I'll get one.
If Atlus confirms another (core) SMT for the system by then, then price doesn't matter.
There really isn't anything out yet that I want the system for(though Folklore looks interesting), but with FFXIII and SMT 4, I'm sure I'll find something.
(There's also, of course, MGS4 and maybe Disgaea 3, but the latter seems like it's wasting the console's potential.)
Are Versus XIII and XIII planned for a simultaneous release, or is that not even remotely possible?
Nope, Versus XIII is planned on being released a year or so after FFXIII. As for other games, go check out Valkyrie of the Battlefield. It mixes together strategy rpg and action elements, it looks really cool.
Anyway, these'll be the games I buy this year for my PS3:
Devil May Cry 4 (multi)
Disgaea 3
Gran Turismo 5
InFamous
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (multi)
Resistance 2
Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan (hopefully it'll be released over here this year)
Tekken 6
Valkyrie of the Battlefield
White Knight Story
A couple of them are multiplatform games but it's still a pretty damn good list I'd say. I've no real interest in GTA4 unless they've fixed a lot of the things that pissed me off in the old GTA's.
RainbowDespair: Kitase's team (which developed FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2 and are currently developing FFXIII) has always been pretty reliable when it comes to releasing their games on time. Matsuno, meanwhile, aimed far too high and ended up cutting a ridiculous amount of stuff out of the game. But yeah, I doubt FFXIII will even be released in Japan this year, March 09 fo Japan sounds more likely.

First, I doubt FF13 is coming out this year.
But, regardless, I can see the PS3 outselling the 360 on the months those are released. But otherwise, I don't see it trending all that different from last year. It'll drop down below 360 levels again the next month.
Big game releases have only really provided small, temporary bumps. You can see that with Halo3, a game easily as big or bigger then FF13.

Well, IMO, those two games are the dam bursters. They're the two games that people are waiting on before they snag a PS3. The Xbox, in my opinion at least, no longer has any dam burster titles. They already released theirs and don't have any additional ones they have announced, while Sony still has theirs coming up. I'd say that puts the ball on Sony's court. MS really needs to announce a huge title this year, in my opinion at least. (And no, I don't think anything they have announced currently is anywhere near the league of Metal Gear or Final Fantasy will be.)
And they don't need to outsell the 360 month to month to outsell it overall this year. Keeping near the 360 for most of the year and then doing an extremely nice holiday would do it.
I don't know if the PS3 will "turn things around" 2008 but I'm fairly sure that 2008 is the last year that they possibly could. I think people are forgetting how much of the developer support the PS3 is getting just because people assumed PlayStation=win. Games like MGS4 and FF13 that give the PS3 at least a slim chance, are a relic of those times.
It's hard to see how 3rd party developers could justify making exclusives for the PS3 at this point since the PS3 doesn't offer anything that could be worth forgoing the sales that the 360 could give. Even in Japan software sales are totally dominated by Nintendo. Given the costs of developing HD games the only options are Wii or PS3+360.

I think it's safe to say that Sony is going to do better than last year. It has, as we've discussed, some nice exclusives lined up, and if there are more price drops they certainly won't hurt.
But Microsoft and Nintendo will also probably do better. Brawl is going to sell by the truckload, I guarantee it. There are the standard Nintendo titles (Mario Kart, Wii Fit, etc) that will do well, but we're also getting to a time where we'll hopefully start to see stronger 3rd party support. The 360 exclusive line-up currently looks pretty slim, but I'd be very surprised if Microsoft doesn't have a LOT up their sleeve. Hell, there are enough fantastic XBLA games coming out that it could practically stand on its own as a system.
I'm optimistic that we will be less "lolsony" this year, but I hardly think they're going to come out ahead, or even come out second.

I don't really give a shit about Sony "winning" or "losing." (I don't even own a PS3, or ever plan on getting one) This is just how I think things are going to play out.
When LittleBigPlanet comes out, I'm getting a PS3.
If this is in 2008, then, for me, Sony will have turned around.
But honestly, apart from Disgaea 3 and LBP, there is absolutely no PS3 exclusive that interests me. Like, at all.
it's been dated for september! considering the delays it's already had i don't suppose it will be pushed back any further, what with the frothing demand
i'm so excited. i know it's the kind of game i'll be hanging on to my ps3 forever to go back and muck around with.
I think 2008 will be a great year for Sony MS and Nintendo. It does seem that Sony has the most big stuff going right now in terms of announcements, but we're in January. I think Sony will get a bigger boost this year, yeah. MGS4, possibly MotorStorm 2, LBP, Home, Resistance 2 and any other exclusive will do well I'm sure.

I crunched the numbers over in the video game sales thread. It's pretty much unthinkable that Sony will catch up to MS saleswise in the US for 2008. Not only does it have to consistenly outsell the 360 pretty much every month, it has to do so by an average of 500k! That's just not going to happen, especially early this year while the PS3 still lacks games, and the price advantage of the 360. Heck, I don't think it'll even outsell the 360 for 2008 alone, because of that reason.
Now if you're talking world-wide, it becomes more plausible. Japan, obviously, is going Sony's way. Parts of Europe (excluding the UK in particular) are apparently Sony-land, but there's still a sizable gap that the PS3 has to beat. Not to mention that the European countries that Sony's doing well in are still small compared to the US and UK.
Personally, I don't think Sony's going to surpass MS in 2008. However, I don't think that necessarily means lolsony or instant fail. As long Sony can bring costs down and ratchet up game sales, there's still a lot of revenue, and eventually profit, to be had. They'll remain extremely relevant, especially in Japan. Sure, 3rd, but not in-deep-trouble-like-Sega third.
Was 2003 the year Nintendo turned it around for the Gamecube? IMO, Sony is too far gone into third place to ever get out of it. They can still be successful in third place but I don't think anything short of an epic ball dropping by Nintendo or Microsoft will put Sony ahead.
anyway, i agree that it'll be a long time before the ps3 has sold more than the 360, but a lot of markets are turning around - interestingly, another market that looks to have switched momentum is here in Australia, where the ps3 outsold the 360 over christmas
with the still high price, no b.c. and the lack of shelf space pretty much anywhere, i thought it would have been a long time before that happened. it's probably singstar's fault.

I like this post. Basically, just because Sony is in 3rd place of the three contenders doesn't mean they can't be successful. I don't think they'll jump up to or ahead of the other two before next console gen.

Ehh, you might want to check your article again. It didn't mention that the PS3 outsold the 360. Neither Nintendo or Microsoft released sales figures. They estimated some game sales, but didn't say which console faired better, only that they were "were within a few thousands units of each other."

i'm pretty sure it's good. GfK isn't a shabby organization and they do state 360 was under the ps3. it was also kind-of confirmed on gaf here - at the moment i think it's safe to say the ps3 was on top unless there's something to say otherwise. whatever the case, it's a slim margin between the two - the ps3 has performed pretty damn well
edit: in case you missed it, there is a little chart insert on the age article that puts ps3 at #4 and xbox 360 at #5

Ahh, I missed the little chart. That said, frankly I'm not exactly trusting GfK nor GAF. And even if I did, seeing how it's a very slim margin anyway, does not imply that all of Australia is switching over to be Sony-land, as you imply.
of course not, i just wanted to add to the discussion by giving some info on the australian market, which hadn't been brought up so far. this is a thread about the ps3 picking up momentum, after all
edit: looking at that kotaku link of yours - it's very old (july to september) and it actually represents a much smaller number of sales than the christmas period. so sure, it was longer, but much quieter on all fronts, and it also doesn't factor in change over that relatively long period. it would have changed a lot, especially considering Q3 2007 was only the second full quarter the PS3 had even been available in australia. we can also read that in the six weeks before 2008 the ps3 sold 20,000 more units than it did in the whole 3 months of july to september
interesting stuff!
editedit: i also think it's likely the christmas sales will be more accurate to ongoing sales, as that q3 period was before the $300 price cut was introduced. it's easy to understand why it only sold 27,000 units when, at that time, the machine cost au$1,000

To rephrase, since the way I wrote it may have been confusing, I think Sony has every possibility of selling more units in 2008 than Microsoft, and I think they actually will. I however do not, under any circumstances, think they'll be able to catch up to Microsoft in total sales. (As I said, they would need to sell six million more consoles than MS in 2008.. completely unrealistic at this point. I totally agree with you there.)

Ahh okay. Now, do you mean US sales or world-wide?
I still think that the PS3 outselling the 360 in 2008 for the US only, is still a big stretch. It's not completely unthinkable, but given recent sales history, I don't see it happening. If the PS3 were to start outselling the 360, it wouldn't do so until at least a few months from now, assuming something changes (like MGS4 coming out). In those months, the 360 will continue to outsell the PS3 by a large margin, which will make it harder for the PS3 to surpass later on. Possibly holiday will be a big difference, but honestly, I think the price difference plays a big part.
Now if you're saying world-wide sales, I can see that.

Aye, worldwide. Though I think finally having MGS4 (and possibly FF13) will pep up the PS3's sales in the long term for the US as well, to the point where it's neck and neck. If we don't see a super strong title from Microsoft by the holidays, then I can see Sony taking the 2nd in the holidays and by a strong enough margine that it could give them the most overall sales in 2008.
'course my entire theory rides on the 360 not getting something MGS4 caliber this year. If they manage to spin up on of their announced titles to that ammount of hype (unlikely) or announce a title that'll do it, then I'd say it far less likely for the PS3 to take 2008.
I think its too early to say anything about Xbox 360 titles for this year, MS have been playing their cards absurdly close to their chest with very few announcements regarding future titles last year. Remember at E3 and the other big events last year, all the hullaballoo about them not announcing new games and emphasing everything coming out this year (2007). I think over the next few months we are going to see a storm of announcements.
However I think that PS3 is definitely back in the race this year thanks to the onboard blue-ray player. PS3 prices combined with HD adoption are going to make a lot of people start wanting a proper HD source for their new screens this year, and I think PS3 will fill that slot for many people.
Combine that with the fact that I'm sure the Wii will hit market saturation soon, how many people can really want to play that bowling game for petes sake! Hopefully we can get back on track with our actual console war this year, and the random nonsense of mini-game collections can be consigned to the past where it belongs.
I hope you aren't calling the Wii a mini-game machine.
I think the Wii has far more potential than either PS3 or XBOX due to the wider audience that the Wii has.
PS3 and XBox were only "next-gen" graphics wise. Nintendo actually made something new.

GDC is coming up, and I'm guessing that's when MS and other developers will announce their 2008 titles. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the PR/marketing strategy to only focus on 2007 holiday release for the 360. But apparently it worked, so whatever. Now it's time to see what's in store for this holiday. Sure, we already know about games like Fable 2 and Alan Wake. Titles like Gears of War 2 have been rumored though (still 360 exclusive?). Then don't forget that GTA IV is going to sell a ton of units either way. The price advantage may help, as well as the exclusive DLC.
That said, MGS4 could be huge. It's hard to tell, since MGS2 was so popular, yet MGS3 wasn't nearly as popular. I'm personally excited for it, but it's not enough for me to pull the trigger on a PS3. A proper Square-Enix game (a la FFXIII or a new KH) would do that for me though!

I might just be going from anecdotal evidence, but every single person I've met who plans on getting a PS3 at some point is waiting for MGS4 or FFXIII. I do believe that once it's released we'll see PS3 sales pickup over the long run.

Also, ports from PSP like that Silent Hill prequel, GoW: CoO, and Rachet and Clank: SM.

The little console that could will continue to outsell both of 'em though.
The only games I keep coming back to are Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Unchartered at the moment, so I hope the gap is filled so it doesn't just collect dust on my coffee table.

Honestly, my choice for platform of the year?
Rock Band (on both 360 and PS3).
Your Current Signature Picture[/SIGPIC]
But there are no PS3's with BC in Australia, and I would like to play some PS2 games without having to worry about another system.
So I'll just leave it on my wishlist and they wont have my money.

When LittleBigPlanet comes out, I'm getting a PS3.
If this is in 2008, then, for me, Sony will have turned around.
But honestly, apart from Disgaea 3 and LBP, there is absolutely no PS3 exclusive that interests me. Like, at all.
Maybe in Japan. Like, in December.
There's no way in hell that the US would see FFXIII this year. We should all remember how long it takes S-E to do all the translation and localization. We're definitely talking 2009 for the US. (And ironically, that's probably when I'll get a PS3! I

Dammit, I hate to see Scottsmen (or zombies for that matter) cry, especially on Christmass. Please reconsider getting your hopes up for this.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
What he said.

I don't really give a shit about Sony "winning" or "losing." (I don't even own a PS3, or ever plan on getting one) This is just how I think things are going to play out.
it's been dated for september! considering the delays it's already had i don't suppose it will be pushed back any further, what with the frothing demand
i'm so excited. i know it's the kind of game i'll be hanging on to my ps3 forever to go back and muck around with.
Sure, 3rd, but not in-deep-trouble-like-Sega third.

anyway, i agree that it'll be a long time before the ps3 has sold more than the 360, but a lot of markets are turning around - interestingly, another market that looks to have switched momentum is here in Australia, where the ps3 outsold the 360 over christmas
with the still high price, no b.c. and the lack of shelf space pretty much anywhere, i thought it would have been a long time before that happened. it's probably singstar's fault.
I like this post. Basically, just because Sony is in 3rd place of the three contenders doesn't mean they can't be successful. I don't think they'll jump up to or ahead of the other two before next console gen.
Hahahaha
Ahahahaha
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Seriously, yeah, have fun playing FFXIII on your non-existent magic console powered by time traveling faeries because there's no goddamn way it's coming out this year
er?
i'm talking about little big planet
Ehh, you might want to check your article again. It didn't mention that the PS3 outsold the 360. Neither Nintendo or Microsoft released sales figures. They estimated some game sales, but didn't say which console faired better, only that they were "were within a few thousands units of each other."
Check your "facts" next time!
In any case, I'd be more interested to know what the quarter sales were. For July through September, the Wii dominated, and the 360 was solidly in second.

i'm pretty sure it's good.
You need at least two to make a pattern.
Try again next month and we'll see.

edit: looking at that kotaku link of yours - it's very old (july to september) and it actually represents a much smaller number of sales than the christmas period. so sure, it was longer, but much quieter on all fronts, and it also doesn't factor in change over that relatively long period. it would have changed a lot, especially considering Q3 2007 was only the second full quarter the PS3 had even been available in australia. we can also read that in the six weeks before 2008 the ps3 sold 20,000 more units than it did in the whole 3 months of july to september
interesting stuff!
editedit: i also think it's likely the christmas sales will be more accurate to ongoing sales, as that q3 period was before the $300 price cut was introduced. it's easy to understand why it only sold 27,000 units when, at that time, the machine cost au$1,000
