Muckyfoot never patched Startopia and didn't last long enough to make a sequel.
The death of Sega as both a hardware publisher and a force in the video game industry saddens me. What exists now is more or less a soulless publishing zombie, cavorting around in the skin of Sega, whoring out what once made them great. I mean, being basically forced to include Nintendo's Mario in a sports-themed minigame collection just to have a modest hit...
The merger of Square Soft and Enix. I didn't realize the implications then but now it's sad to think about. That single event marked the end of what I considered the renaissance of jRPG gaming.
Every time I pull out one of my older games and see the old Square Soft logo I shed a single tear.
"I love you, Looking Glass Studios! You made, like, Thief and System Shock, two of the greatest games ever, and then you made Terranova, which for one of your suckier games was actually good! I can't wait to see what you do next. . .
The saddest moment for me was realizing that I had been a generation or two behind since day one (I got my SNES around the time Nintendo was asking whether we were N or out), and would never catch up, ultimately giving up because I couldn't even afford to jump ahead and skip everything I missed.
Now all my hobbies are the sort of thing that can be done cheaply.
Just knowing that it was coming out kept my hopes up for future LucasArts releases.... when Full Throttle 2 got cancelled, the coffin was quickly lowered into the ground. /sigh

As long as they think Halo and Madden are "awesome" does it matter?
Well, if they didn't get hired, does it really matter? You do realize not everyone follows gaming as closely as people do on this board, and maybe (just maybe), they just wanted a fucking job?
You're acting like being a young gamer or casual gamer is a vile thing (and given your sig, I probably should have expected that).
If you were shopping at Pottery Barn would you not expect the employed to have at least some interest or knowledge of pottery?
Some interest in pottery and knowing the history of pottery are two different things.
Fellow 80s gamers it's time to realize a new generation of gamers is out there. A generation that didn't play Metroid, doesn't know the Konami code by heart, who doesn't even know that US Final Fantasy III is actually Final Fantasy VI. These are things that happened before their time, and while it might be crazy to hear some people don't know who Samus was before Metroid Prime or if they're a bad enough dude to save the president, this is the experience that every form of art, media, hobby, any thing with a history (which means everything) has gone through.
He also might have been a PC gamer exclusively. I mean, how many NES kids would actually know what a grue is?
Realizing that Nintendo is going to let the Game Boy quietly fade away due to the roaring sucess of the DS. Oh, I can remember when it all began with that wonderful gray brick of a system and Tetris. You marvellous titan, you will be missed

There are some things I expect most every gamer to know.
Who is Mario / Samus / Sonic / Link / Master Chief / Chun-li?
What is Nintendo?
How many Playstations / Final Fantasy's have there been? (main FF games, no curveball shit with X-2, etc)
We're talking about staple information, not niche gaming knowledge.
Sitting here downloading mods for X3 (WHY do half of these people keep their stuff on sites that wind up dead?!) reminds me of how much space flight sims and freelance games have really gone down. We've got Freelancer, X2/3, Freespace 2 SCP, and X-Wing Alliance...and that's about it as far as the major/quality titles go.
What I would give for a massively-moddable quality space/freelance sim...
I live around a lot of casinos and they all seem to have arcades in some capacity and some recently renovated casinos have some really, really nice arcades now. Maybe you guys just need to move somewhere with a gambling powered economy.
But what really makes me feel sad every time I think about it is the state of what was formerly the Electronics Boutique. In the late 90's and early this decade, I used to exclusively shop for games there. Sometimes I'd just go in there because I actually liked the people that worked there. They were knowledgeable and fun, not the know-it-all high school age morons that work in every EB or GameStop now. They'd even occasionally let customers into the back where they had the consoles hooked up and play fighting games viewable on the TVs in the store.
They all knew me by name and the whole environment was friendly. But eventually, those employees all moved on and it wasn't quite the same but it wasn't too bad. Then EB got bought out by GameStop. Now it's all pushing pre-orders and used games and HEY DO YOU WANT GAME INFORMER?!

That's all console info, what about PC gamers? Do you know how many Zorks there are, or what kind of ship the Tiger's Claw was, or the Richard Garriott's nickname? Or who did the soundtrack for Quake?
Come on, in the 30 years of gaming history there has been a shitload of games for people to love and hate, and many different GENRES of games for people to latch onto. And now with the Pokemon kids growing up into adulthood there's an entire generation of gamers who never experienced the shit older gamers experienced, and it's not like they can just go back and play all the classics or study gaming history in High School.
And putting Master Chief among that group? You should be slapped.
This one may be a little more obscure, but one of my saddest days in gaming was the day that EA announced that they were going to be shutting down the Motor City Online servers (a racing MMO), due to wanting to focus on the Sims and lag issues that they never did resolve, though I never encountered them.
For those who have no clue what it was, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_City_Online is a decent and short read, I guess. Ever since it was brought down, I've wanted to recreate the style of it myself or find something similar. The racing was a little more loose, I guess it was closer to a Flatout game than a NFS game, but with fully customizable parts (where it mattered, not adding a wing or body kit). I was and still am a sucker for anything with muscle cars.
This was when my 15 year old self promised to hate EA for the rest of my days. They've obliged by supplying the fuel for this hate with their past 5 or 6 years of actions.
I'm gonna agree with the death of arcades. One week, there was an arcade in every mall with rows of machines. The next, all replaced by random shops. I remember feeling devastated at the loss of those machines.
This was made all the clearer when I spent some time in Japan and played in those arcades. It felt, well, like returning home in a sense. Playing competitive fighting games, shooting games, and strange card games that I'd not seen in the states... It really reminded me why old arcades were so goddamn awesome.

Just yesterday I was thinking about how much I liked going into Electronics Boutique and wondered whether or not I was seeing the past through rose-tinted glasses.
I have never been into a Gamestop that doesn't make me physically ill. Seriously. Every single Gamestop I've ever been in has some god-awful musty smell that makes me want to gag, is insanely poorly laid-out, and just makes me feel squicked out in general. Their selection of games is always terrible, and in general I'm not sure why someone would go there.
But I remember the EB I used to frequent as being quite pleasant, with a knowledgeable staff, pleasant atmosphere, and a nice selection of obscure and import titles.
I personally can 100% relate to the OP, actually. CounterStrike pre-Source was what occupied my every bit of free time. I was never super-good, but I was okay. I usually liked to goof off a lot and try funny things. I also preferred to play on servers where I knew the players were better then me. Getting on a lot of pubs I'd get a very high k:d, but the server I usually played on I'd be satisfied if I got a 1.5:1. And I preferred to play there.
In fact, I loved playing on this one server so much I would literally sit there and spam connect 64.81.178.11:27015 all freaking day. Yes, I still remember the IP. Later I realized that you could just type in the dns name...but i digress.
I spent hours and hours playing with the same people. I was between 15 and 19 when I played, so I had a fair bit of free time. All of my real life friends played, too. The server I was playing on was a very tight-knit community that got together annually for a BBQ every summer, and I went to two or three of them. I've since felt like I've never had as much fun playing video games as I did when I played there. I stopped playing when I went to college and had an absolute shite connection. I loved LAN parties playing CS, staying up all night on caffeeine. The level of community was great. The server appealed to a typically mature audience that still knew how to have fun. So lamers were kept to a minimum. Hell, my ass got banned for being a douchenozzle the first few times I posted on the forums.
I have never felt that connected to an online gaming community, and haven't since. I also don't think I put forth the requisite effort anymore, either, because I don't know if I really feel inspired to.

my closest gamestop has cool staff and is neatly organized, it's just sad that it's the exception and not the rule. The manager even talked a lady out of buying third party controllers because we know how bad those things break.

The arcades in the Reno casinos aren't very good - most of the games are broken in at least one way, and all they usually have are shooting/racing/ddr machines with the occasional MVC2. You probably live in Vegas :P
Aye, the Gamestop acquisition of EB was an ugly thing. The pre-ordering shit was bad enough, but when I noticed them marking some games up $5-10 I gave up on buying things new there.

You're acting like being a young gamer or casual gamer is a vile thing (and given your sig, I probably should have expected that).
What?
If you don't know shit about games, don't apply to a game store. That's common sense. There's nothing wrong with being a casual gamer nor did I ever insinuate that. I know a lot of casual gamers and even they talk about the bad experiences that they've had at Gamestop.
Don't know what the fuck made you fly off the handle.
EDIT: and my sig is making a statement about gameplay mattering moreso than bells and whistles. Obviously you missed that point too.
Unless you need a job, are willing to learn, and they're hiring. Maybe it's just the job market in Alberta, but 100% of employers here take whatever they can get. Let's face it, most retail store employees only have some knowledge of what they're selling. It depends on the products, but stores that sell media like books, movies, and video games do not have employees with encyclopedic knowledge on the format. They may know some things about it (depending on age and taste), but to expecting them to know everything is a little... unfair.
And I don't think I "flew off the handle." Your post really did come off that way IMO. Perhaps I was wrong. By the way, your sig implies newer games focus exclusively on bells and whistles over gameplay. I couldn't disagree more, hence my comment.
While I didn't grow up with NES and SNES games etc we did have a Sega Genesis and I love those Sonic games to bits. Since then I've played Chrono Trigger, early Final Fantasies etc and I've gotta say that it's quite depressing that people never make game concepts like Chrono Trigger these days. I dunno but that was perhaps the best RPG I've ever played, after Fallout 2 perhaps.
Old games kick ass so much, it'd be great if developers nowadays thought a bit about the actual game more instead of fancy ass graphics that seem to take up 95% of development time and thereby make games decidedly shorter. That really depresses me.
I used to be on a mod team for HL1. Around the time I joined, the team made some gameplay changes that alot of the fans hated. Like, violently hated. My team leader started receiving hate mail and threatening phone calls for the changes that he made to his free mod. Eventually, after a couple years of abuse, the team got sick of the crap they were taking and decided to make a brand new mod for HL2 that used new gameplay and a new IP.
Before either the old HL1 mod had ended or the new HL2 mod had been released, "fans" of the old HL1 mod that were angry with the changes to the later versions hijacked our entire server that the webpage and forums were on, robbing us of everything we'd hosted for the past three years or so. The bastards actually called up our server provider (a free host, ReconGamer, don't ever use them), talked to them for awhile about how they were no longer in contact with the previous team leader (who'd had a brakedown and disappeared for a few months), and were outright given control of the server. After a phone call.
I can't begin to describe the hurt and embarrassment of coming back from a party and finding out on IRC that our server had been taken from us due to the hijackers' malevolence and the host's ineptitude.
EDIT: I should point out that it was largely a propaganda stunt. We'd pretty much ended work on the HL1 mod and had all of our assets backed up locally. And our HL2 mod was on a completely different server. All that we lost was the forums database and the odds and ends we kept on our FTP (I lost several of my gf's photos). ReconGamer belatedly realized they'd been hoodwinked and offered to give us the server back, but the damage had been done.

I don't place Samus, Final Fantasy, or even Legend of Zelda knowledge up there with the others, because the mainstream has been saturated with the others to a massively higher degree.
Halo is the representative game of the XBox and arguably the 360 (modern gaming hint hint), Mario likewise for the Nintendo, Sonic had a TV show. Chun Li's more of a stretch but if you're old enough to have gone to arcades younger you've probably seen Street Fighter at one point or another, whether you remember how to spell Dhalsim or not. Though you're correct in that this isn't niche knowledge, it isn't staple knowledge either. Fuck that elitism.
And do you know what a grue is? What was the name of Kyle Katarn's ship? The code for invincibility in Quake?
Boy, I bet I sound like a tremendous asshole demanding you know the answer to these questions, particularly if all you really need to know is how to run a register.

If this was in response to my disliking Deus Ex 2, it had nothing to do with the graphics. My problem with it was that to make room for those graphics, it turned the levels into a series of small rooms instead of the wide open spaces that I enjoyed in Deus Ex original.

That's arguably more of a side-effect of the console development than the graphics upgrade. My problem with that game come from the screwed up design anyway, it just doesn't capture the feel of the original anywhere near as well.

ReconGamer belatedly realized they'd been hoodwinked and offered to give us the server back, but the damage had been done.

I noticed as much while reading the rules. What ER's?

If this was in response to my disliking Deus Ex 2, it had nothing to do with the graphics. My problem with it was that to make room for those graphics, it turned the levels into a series of small rooms instead of the wide open spaces that I enjoyed in Deus Ex original.
That's arguably more of a side-effect of the console development than the graphics upgrade. My problem with that game come from the screwed up design anyway, it just doesn't capture the feel of the original anywhere near as well.
