It's not sexist to observe that there are only a handful (if even that) of female characters in videogames with something called 'dignity.' I can only think of Jade from BG&E off the top of my head. It's not sexist to observe that there are few, if any, females on G4 that actually play games or know anything about them (note: Morgan Webb is not one of them). It's also not sexist to observe that, currently, females present in games serve as little more than eye candy.

True. The only other female main protagonist akin to Jade that I can think of is Alis from Phantasy Star. And that was two DECADES ago.
Fuck you. QUIT FUCKING GENERALIZING EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PERSON ON THE DAMN PLANET! You don't know what the fuck your talking about and you're just being a sexist prick. Shut the hell up and come back here with an actual argument.
Saddest moment. When an EB Clerk said to a lady trying to buy a Gamecube and Resident Evil 4, "What are you buying a game cube 4? It's all kiddy games."
In that case, you immedietly leave, using pointer and thumb tightly across the bridge of your nose and shake your head.
I left. Never went back to that EB.
Yes, but you make a show of never coming back, without being a douche.
I don't know if there was a particular event that caused it, but the death of the graphic adventure. I loved the genre, still do. To me the death of the genre really hurt those of us that enjoyed funny games - action games often move too quick to really have a good story or sense of humor and RPGs move slower but often take themselves too seriously. The death of the graphic adventure (and the rise of the FPS) pretty much marked the death of my interest in keeping a PC uptodate for gaming.
The new Sam and Max games are pretty good... but yeah there's definitely nothing coming out right now that can compare with the classics of old. It's a real shame.
Play Dreamfall. A few years old, sure, but it has the most engrossing story in a game I've played in a while.
Fixed. The 'game' portions of Dreamfall are definitely not what make it so incredible.
I'm a male gamers who's perfectly normal around girls, as if they were *gasp* just human beings like guys.

Well okay she's not a main character, but she's definitely a good female videogame character in my book
The death of the arcade. No, not that flashy, well lit Dave & Busters shit, but the musty cave-like lairs they used to have in Times Square that were living videogame museums. Didn't feel like playing the new Mortal Kombat or NBA Jam game? Weave your way to the back and get your Karate Champ or Battlezone on.
Speaking of Battlezone, the long, slow, painful death of Atari. Then the exhumation of the corpse of Atari. Then watching that corpse being necromanced into a zombie crackwhore who'll do anything for a nickel. It's not like Atari just died, it's that instead of being remembered as one of the greatest game developers of all time they're seen as a kitschy retro brand or the set-up for a joke about E.T. cartridges.
Oh, and the demise of Broderbund. Choplifter and Lode Runner 4 life!
The death of the Dreamcast, the subsequent painful decline of Sega, and the disbanding of Smilebit.

There we go. I knew I was forgetting someone. Oh, and the president's daughter from RE4 doesn't count:
You know, after the whole "Hey Leon I'll let you bang me because you saved my life!" thing
I found the ending to Twilight Princess to be pretty moving. It's the only Zelda game that brought me to the brink of tears.
, i finished that right before dinner with my family, they had been yelling at me for a while during the credits i was ignoring them cause i just KNEW something was going to happen. The credits seemed to last an hour, and then the last scene starts and I get a little fluttery (the scene immediately post G-dorf was touching enough, with run up the hill and the suddenness of it (so theatrical)). And then CRASH! I dropped my controller and just stared at my TV for a couple moments. I finally came out of the room and my parents were like "what happened to you?"
anyway saddest moment in gaming...
well sad in a bad way?
for me
when Illusionz (local arcade) closed...
illusionz was a massive (larger than most gameworks) arcade in my hometown that closed last year. The laser tag alone was in a fully constructed 3 level castle,! seriously, bigger than any non-mansion house! It was locally owned and not a chain, it was so cool to be in the town with it.
seriously im worried. these are truly the end of days. duke nukem forever is coming out, and the best nintendo ds game on the horizon is a sonic the hedgehog rpg by bioware.
We have both a nickel and a penny arcade here in town. The nickel arcade is pretty run-down but has some gems buried in it (the battletoads arcade machine, and it's free to play!). The penny arcade...I don't feel safe there.

Other than that though, its loitered with those shitty "win a million tickets for bullshit" games and ski-ball.

Mario Party. I swear, this is the only game my sister will play. I am not joking. I side with Gabe on this game.
Pity there's never been any big arcades around here, I've yet to actually step foot in a store devoted to just arcades. The closest thing to an arcade was a place called Sports Plus, which also featured stuff like bowling and ice skating. It died out, though. At least there's a tabletop gaming store within 5 minutes of my house.
Sonic. How the mighty have fallen.
Also, I'm kinda disappointed that it seems like a vast majority of the next gaming generation are, for lack of better words, snot-nosed brats. I still keep on hearing little 10 year olds saying they don't touch Pokemon becuase it's too kiddy. New flash: you're a kid! Hell, I'm 20 and I still find Pokemon to be quite enjoyable.
Edit: And it's quite sad that the only major gaming store is GameStop. While mine has a decent staff (they don't badger me about preorders, subscriptions, and warranties at all), it is still a GameStop through and through.
See, for me it was when Bungie stopped making Myth games.
You may not be able to notice it visually, but I limed it three times. Also, I thought it was sad that they stopped making Marathon games as well... and no, I don't count Halo as "the evolution of Marathon" as some have suggested to me.
EDIT: And I feel you, YaYa. The death of the Dreamcast was a pain I felt deep in my pocketbook. I was one of the poor/stupid saps that prepaid for the system, four controllers, and Sonic... to see it go down in flames in - was it 6 months? 8 maybe?.
Yeah, I'd have to say Sega's long fall from grace gets me. I have to admit, even when I went to buy my Wii and SMG there was a little voice inside - the voice of a long dormant Sega fanboi - telling me, "This is WRONG and you damn well know it. Sony? That was forgivable, but Nintendo? Nintendo is the ENEMY."
Although I redeemed myself somewhat by playing copious amounts of Virtua Fighter this year.
I kinda feel sad everytime I spent 100+ hours on a savegame and then...finish the game. I always end up loading again, desperately looking for something else to do

The way the Gamecube was branded with the "kiddy" image, treated like crap by 3rd parties, ignored by many "gamers" and was never able to reach its full potential.
I guess mine is pretty personal, but my mom accidentally got rid of my N64 and a ton of classics (SSB, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, etc.) when I was a kid. Definitely broke my heart.
The day i tried to plug in my old Atari ST (about a year ago) having lovingly stored it and all my myriad of games, only for it to load the OS (TOS heh) but do nothing more. My heart sank.
And just as painful was when Turbine prematurely shut down the servers for Asheron's Call 2. I have never felt as at home in a MMO as in that game. I still miss it, the community, and the feeling I had when i played with my alliance.
Don't have time to read the entire thread so I don't know if you mean moving sad or disappointing sad. Now, assuming you meant disappointning sad:
Top one would have to be E3 2004, the big unveiling of what would later become Twilight Princess. (yeah right, I went there!) Big shame that the Vader "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" and "DO NOT WANT" memes weren't around back then, they perfectly expressed what I felt (and still feel) and I could have used them.
Second, a rather obscure one involving the rather obscure MMORPG The Saga of Ryzom. I really liked the ideas and style behind the game, even though, lacking a credit card, I've never played it outside of the beta and free trial. The original developers went bankrupt, the game was bought by another company that wasn't satisfied enough with the profit it made and the game was sold again last October. And because of the second company apparently didn't fully pay the liquidator, it's still undecided if there's gonna be a new owner and if so, who it's gonna be. Sad because I felt it had (and has) so much potential, as well as a geat community, and all this changing of owners, the uncertainty of its future, will do nothing to help fulfill that potential.
And finally, a thusfar hypothetical one, the moment the '35 character roster' as rumored by MarkMan and Reno for Smash Bros. Brawl becomes confirmed. Seriously, only a roster of 0 fighters could be more disappointing than that one. What a clusterfuck.
And if you meant moving sad, sorry for wasting your time.

G4's stupid because they try to seem all edgy and shit with retarded shows like Xplay and Cheat when the internet does everything they do 10x better and with less fail.
There are a decent amount of female gamers, so I don't think your claim is valid at all.
Tomb Raider, aside from the PS2 one, is actually really good. So is AC.
So yeah.... you're just generalizing.
Nope, I'm telling the truth
if I was sexist I would quit playing Mario and Zelda games because some dumb bitches keep getting kidnapped
I'll tell you right now I have no idea who Chun-Li is, but I can tell you that zoning shouldn't be more than 3 tiles from a road. I could also tell you that a carpenter will make 6 hammers at the default lumber mill with below 50% support for independence. Or that rushing for Republic instead of Monarchy is a valid strategy. Or that a civilization with siege onagers can be clutch on a black forest map. Or that you shouldn't bother buying 2000 pounds of food because you can shoot a bison 3 hours out. Also, don't forget to pick up your ring on the beach, you'll need it later.
I could also tell you who Crash Bandicoot is, but I don't think anyone cares anymore.
Assuming someone should have the entire knowledge of video gaming's leading characters is a bit extreme; that's like expecting someone who loves music to know the major artist in every genre. Now, tell me what the big polka hits are this season (and also who Chun-Li is...I'm guessing a fighting game, Virtua Fighter or Street Fighter or something...I've actually played Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur and I don't recall any Chun-Lis). Maybe it's just my inner 8 year old speaking, but MegaMan should be on that list, even though I haven't seen him all that much since the NES (even if the number of games since then could conservatively be called 'prolific')).
As for bad moments in gaming, I'll cite the purchase of the NFL license; I was enjoying my $20 Sega Sports games. Pretty much everything else EA has done at some point, as well.
I think most of the other important things were mentioned already.
I wouldn't have minded something running on Van Buren, but that may be slightly remedied soon enough.

"I didn't even know who Metroid was until Metroid Prime came out." - A candidate for employment at Gamestop.
As long as they think Halo and Madden are "awesome" does it matter?
Well, if they didn't get hired, does it really matter? You do realize not everyone follows gaming as closely as people do on this board, and maybe (just maybe), they just wanted a fucking job?
You're acting like being a young gamer or casual gamer is a vile thing (and given your sig, I probably should have expected that).
If you were shopping at Pottery Barn would you not expect the employed to have at least some interest or knowledge of pottery?
Some interest in pottery and knowing the history of pottery are two different things.
Fellow 80s gamers it's time to realize a new generation of gamers is out there. A generation that didn't play Metroid, doesn't know the Konami code by heart, who doesn't even know that US Final Fantasy III is actually Final Fantasy VI. These are things that happened before their time, and while it might be crazy to hear some people don't know who Samus was before Metroid Prime or if they're a bad enough dude to save the president, this is the experience that every form of art, media, hobby, any thing with a history (which means everything) has gone through.
He also might have been a PC gamer exclusively. I mean, how many NES kids would actually know what a grue is?
Do you have any idea how goddamned old you just made me feel?
If you don't know what a grue is you can get right the fuck off my lawn. If you know what's good for you you'll do so before it gets dark.
Saddest moment for me was beating Ocarina of Time, because it was the first game I could beat on my own without any explanation of the plot or my brother fighting the bosses for me.
Either that, or playing Portal and just not grasping and enjoying the gameplay. Excellent game, but it wasn't FOR ME.

I submit to the thread:
'The public perception of change is bad'
"They made Metroid a first person shooter? Wow, Nintendo is fucking retarded"
"Why the fuck would they make link look like a 4 year old, way to go kidtendo"
and to follow the last one "Why the fuck would they make link so realistic, bring back my Celda!"
"Why the fuck would they call their console a synonym for the male genetalia!"
None of those decisions hurt any of those products, but you sure as hell wouldn't of been able to tell that up to a year before releases of them.

It worries me how many people in this very thread seem to wish we'd stayed in 2D and never moved past the SNES.

I dont' think its that they wish we never moved forward. I just think they (and I) wish that 2D was more than 1% of the market.
When 3D rolled out, all the devs in the world pretty much dropped 2D like it was a case of herpes or something. Sure 3D offered something new and enjoyable, but it sure would be nice if some devs would come back to it once in a while.

It's still pretty much the entirety of the DS market isn't it? I'm not saying we should have stopped making 2D games, because they're still fun as hell to play. They're still perfectly viable with: The DS, The PSP, Xbox Live Arcade, PSN and WiiWare there's still the potential for a lot of original and awesome 2D games.
I'm not even sure what I meant to say here. I love 2D and 3D games?
Also, I'm kinda disappointed that it seems like a vast majority of the next gaming generation are, for lack of better words, snot-nosed brats. Apparently you weren't around for the SNES/Genesis war.
Kidtendo!! They don't even have blood in their Mortal Kombat!
Nothin' new about that.
Sonic. How the mighty have fallen.
*Sigh* And the worst part is that things were looking up! Okay, so the Saturn passed us by without any Sonic game of note, but Sonic Adventure was, largely, a great return-to-form for the franchise and definitely the best Sonic game since S3&K. Smooth sailing from then on out, right?
It's been almost ten years since Sonic Adventure (and holy fuck does that make me feel old), and the "Sonic" name has become a sure sign of a bad game rather than a good one. Never thought I'd see the day.
Changing Zelda back to 'realistic' after Wind Waker was sad.
Wind Waker has aged better than Twilight Princess has. I'd argue it is the better game. That cel shaded style fit Zelda perfectly. Kinda like how the illustrative style of TF2 makes sense of an incredibly unrealistic scenario, the 'cartoony' style of Wind Waker put the entire world in context.
In Wind Waker, princesses can get kidnapped, giant bird can attack castles and you can sail a talking dragon boat around the world and it all makes sense.
In Twilight Princess so many parts of that game were jarring and the visual style merely accentuated the artificial and unrealistic gameplay (or pushing blocks and pulling levels and shit like that)
Nintendo shouldnt have listened to its fans. Wind Waker was a step in the right direction. Twilight Princess, while good, I think was a mistake.

Apparently you weren't around for the SNES/Genesis war.
Kidtendo!! They don't even have blood in their Mortal Kombat!
Nothin' new about that.
