Casting Bruce Willis in the day was almost like casting Danny DeVito.

Well, if they weren't going for a macho sex-appeal guy... then apparently the Casting guy got it wrong.

Bruce Willis has sex appeal? Dude with a beer gut who is balding and forgot to shave? Willis, an unknown at the time?

    This guy:

Maybe my family is messed up, but I remember all my aunts and female cousins pining over him (Bruce Willis).

At the same time, I know a whole lot of women that think Stallone looks like a dog.

Bruce Willis was, at the time, mostly known for. . . I think Moonlighting. So casting him as an action hero was definitely a fish out of water scenario. Which is the point of the Die Hard movies: McClaine isn't some pumped up soldier, just a cop who's having a really really bad day. Which is why I actually liked the fourth Die Hard movie, because he's got no idea what all this computer shit is, he's just there to kick evil's ass.

Also, I can't really call Samus a sex object: sure, she wound up in a bikini in her first game, but that was to drive home the point of, "Guess what, it's a girl!" to gamers. As for her taking off her armor in the other games: well, yes, there's a bit of fanservice going on, but it's always tasteful. You don't see her bouncing around a beach wearing a thong. She's in a Zero Suit, or a tankini at most: something you might actually wear under a half-ton suit of powered armor, because, you know, it kinda chafes if you're naked under that thing. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Anyway, I kinda gotta agree with Yahtzee's annoyance that Tomb Raider Anniversary Lara is all bitchy when she gets flirted with. I'd rather see a female character who's willing to flirt back a bit, because, you know, that is a good lookin' guy, and so on and so forth.

    Where was I. . .

Ah yes, sad moments in gaming.

"Hey, it's a Tenchu game for DS! I love that series! I wonder if it's any good?

    ". . . oh. Oh, I see. . ."

trying to get back on topic

A few more sad moments in gaming, not sure when exactly they occured.

    The invention of moneyhats.

    The invention of console mascots.

The whole debacle of Valve getting hacked and some jackass screwing with the code to HL2, delaying the release and screwing it up for everyone. And then I didn't have an internet connection so I couldn't play the damn game until years later when it came out in the Orange Box.

Watching Sony do its best to collapse under the weight of its own hubris.

Coming to the realization that a cheap price tag and a gimmicky controller will beat out (sales-wise) a well-established next-gen system (XB360) and a system that has more bang for its buck than anything else out there.(PS3)

    ". . . Looking Glass? Hey, stop doing that. That's not funny. . .

    "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

You forgot Ultima Underworld I & II. Holy shit those games were ahead of their times. Origin and Looking Glass were two of my favorite dev studios.

I think the biggest problem with Dreamcast is their stupid marketing. (well aside from their financial problems) Their commercials didn't show enough in game footage. I didn't realize how awesome the DC was still I played Soul Calibur on a friend's. I bought one that week. (DC with vga cable couldn't be beat. It had native VGA graphics, moving to ps2 fell like a big step back.)

And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

A personal sad moment for me was when gaming could no longer fill in the void that was my childhood happiness. I wish I could have that felling of happiness when a few friends and me would say up all night playing Counter Strike, Quake 2 and 3, and StarCraft. Those were good fucking times right there.

While I agree the Wii's potential would be really expanded if it had coupled the innovative controls with more power akin to the 360 or PS3, I think the low price because of it is really a huge part of what makes it's sales huge.
I think it'd be great to see what kind of games we get for a next gen Wii revision, with more processing power.
That said, the Wii is perfect the way it is right now for it's market. Don't like it, don't get it.

Videogames have been part of pop culture since long before the SNES and N64.

I do miss the Arcades, when Street Fighter 2 came out I used to go to the arcade for hours on a buck or two and escape when my parents fought. There was always a line to play the game and you just put up your quarter next to the player 1 button and waited your turn. Also nobody jumped in line or tried to take your quarter (and this was Detroit). Shortly after that MortalKombat came out and the two machines were neck and neck for who had the bigger line.

Remember the lines for Dragonslair? The cabnets with the extra video monitor on top so the crowd could watch?

A sad arcade trend was when TMNT came out. This game started the "quarter eater" trend that happened in arcade machines. They made the game so hard that you had to just feed it quarters no matter how good you where. (hated those games)

I also wish some of the things that Sega tried to do with the dreamcast would have been picked up by the other machines. The controler had a little Memory cardthingy that had a video screen on it, this made picking plays on a football game super secret squirl type, I think this added so much more gameplay that I hope will return again.

Red Steel actually did something like this.

In one of its multiplayer modes the Wiimote speaker rang like a cellphone. You pushed A and put it up against your ear.

Then, each of the four players was given an objective.

    "Kill Player 2"
"Defend Player 1 for 90 seconds"
    "Kill someone with a grenade"
"Stay alive for 90 seconds with the Body Armor"
    etc...

Though the bulk of that game was horrible... this mode of gameplay actually saw quite a bit of action over a New Years party.

My favourite genres are niche even in gaming, so I kind of agree there. Turn Based Strategy and old school RPGs.

I still loves me my Rock Bands and Guitar Heroes though. And DDR was fun back when that was the big thing, too.

It's fine, but with casual gaming on the rise and Spike and G4 literally forcing it into pop culture (which it just plain isn't), I feel like we're in a real awkward place between niche hobby and mainstream interest, similar to movies and music. I was perfectly content when I couldn't talk to everybody about games, only my friends and people on the net. Now it seems like everyone is coming on board, but they weren't with the hobby in its infancy and...I don't know, it just needs to be one or the other.

This is called gaming 'burn out', I've suffered with this before, I went through a period where I just couldn't be bothered with games and I thought they were just rehashing the same shit over and over, then I went through a 'non-gaming' phase, got a girlfriend, went out drinking with my buddies, got really drunk and got told the alcohol was making me ill, the girlfriend dumped me, the parties were killing me, the work was stressing me to death and giving me palpitations and I had no way of relaxing other than sitting watching a DVD whilst a psychotic 'on/off' girlfriend hurled abuse at me and told me how useless I was.

I was earning a good wage, I was living the american dream, poisoning my liver and being hated by the opposite sex, so why was I not happy? Eventually I bought an old NES and SNES at a fleamarket, picked a few games up off Ebay, and now I am totally ensconced in my happy gaming universe again, and I'm engaged to a 'normal' woman!

TLDR: Gave up games, met psychobitch, got told everything I was enjoying was bad for me, went back to games, ditched the bitch. HAPPY!

I don't mind, but I hate how people roll their eyes at me when I say I'm good at Halo. I just say it in passing, but they seem to think games like that are nerdy. Mention Guitar Hero and then it's entirely different. "I can beat it on Hard!". I think games like DDR and Guitar Hero are much more mainstream. Also, everyone loves mario. At my high school, almost everyone plays it on the school computers.

The Xbox is a sad moment in gaming. Actually, the sad part is how quickly it was killed off. The system had a whole lot of potential left before it went down. I mean, the thing only laster 4 years. Imagine the kind of stuff we would have gotten on it if it just lasted a year or two longer, we'd really see what the thing was capable of. This generation would have turned out better for us if it lasted longer too, but that's a different point.

The Dreamcast also falls under this. It's life was cut so short that we never got to see what it was really capable of. The early deaths of these systems are a real tragedy.

I also think the PS3 is a sad moment in gaming for a different reason. Sony went from having a console that dominated everything and was just an incredible console to having the PS3. The PS3 has some fantastic games but it's never going to be like the PS2. There's just so much wasted potential there.

Actually, I think wasted potential is what this post is all about. It really saddens me to see things that could have been so great fall short of that. Oh well, not much you can do.

I consider the PS3 a symbol of what went wrong with gaming.

    It's

    1. Too fucking big.
    2. Too fucking expensive.
    3. Too much of a fucking marketing ploy for Blu-Ray
    4. Too fucking complicated.
    5. Too fucking sparse on the games library.
    6. Too fucking overpowered
    7. Too fucking hard to control

And that's a lot of fuckings.

That doesn't even cover the fucking over it does to gamers.

Yeah, but it's different now. It's like a jock/prep mentality almost. Just like when pro-wrestling was real popular with Steve Austin and the nWo and shit. Normally, no one cared, but it became popular and suddenly everyone was a fan.

I don't see how video gaming getting an expanded audience is anything but a good thing. So what if some people start gaming with Halo, Madden, and Wii Sports? Why do you care so much if someone who plays Madden and Halo calls themselves a gamer? Last I checked, all are video games. You're acting like it's somehow ruining gaming for so-called "real gamers."

Also, the death of Shmups like R-Type and Gradius and Axelay. I miss some good old fashioned shmups, nothing too crazy hard but nothing extremely easy either.

Dude, the XBLA, PSN and VC have seen an amazing wealth of new shmups and older classics getting a new lease on life, and all for $5 to $10 each. Hell, I think Geometry Wars pretty much revived Robotron-clone twin-stick shooters on its own. It's possibly the best time in the world to be a shmup fan! :D

oh? good news indeed then :D I forgot cause well, my 360's not online :(

I'd stil like a new R-Type, come on Irem! Final was good but let's see a super bad ass revival of R-Type!

XBLA is awesome, especially if you like shmups. Omega Five is like the love child of R-Type and Forgotten Worlds. Geo Wars and the Mutant Storm games (Empire is the more recent and IMO better one) are beautiful Robotron clones, and Heavy Weapon is also great for four-player online coop madness in a bullet-hell like environment.
