I'll play and enjoy SSE, but personally I wish they hadn't included it. I don't think it's worth the significant amount of development time it must have added to Brawl. Smash is all about the multiplayer, and I'd rather it came out earlier or with more characters than a better singleplayer mode.
Well I, for one, am glad your personal wishes were not taken into account.
Seriously dude.
I mean, what could they add to multiplayer? The balance is already damn near perfect and SSE didn't stop them from like.. what, more than doubling the character roster? Tripling the stage count? Adding tonnes of new and interesting items and game mechanics?
I mean, Jesus dude, what do you expect to gain by saying this? You think people are gonna amble in and agree with you when there's absolutely zero evidence that the inclusion of SSE negatively impacted the development of the multiplayer at all.
In fact, didn't Sakurai stress that there were two seperate teams for Brawl in Iwata Asks? One being multiplayer and one being SSE?
When I saw DeDeDe was in, I really wanted to play him - but he's looking to be one of those OP SOBs so I will humbly choose a run of the mill character so that I am not the "jerk who plays Dedede" to my friends. I just hope that all the other characters are just as viable and there aren't any 'basically suicide' characters.

Agreed.
*eyes goes red at Zek's comments* Game development is never that simple, ever.

They didn't double the roster at all from the sounds of it, even if you don't count clones... I'm mostly satisfied with 35 characters but given the choice between a full-blown adventure mode and 40-45 characters, I'll take the latter no contest. Why would I prefer a singleplayer mode that I'll be done with in a few weeks over a bunch of characters I'll be playing for years? I don't see what's so controversial about saying that I would rather fight with Mega Man, Geno, Ridley, etc than play a good platformer. Multiplayer content is an innately more worthwhile use of time, IMHO, because it has far greater replay value.
And I'm not gaining anything, this is an internet message board and I'm posting my opinion for people to see. I don't need evidence to say that a deep singleplayer mode like this doesn't get implemented without a substantial amount of developer manpower, that could instead be spent developing other things and/or getting the game done much earlier.

You're making the unsupported assumption that characters are excluded.
And that, if they are excluded, it was because of the 'focus' on SSE.
And not, for example, because the developers decided not to include them.
I don't mind opinions but it sure is great when they're supported by evidence.

The only problem with this theory is that with every new character added, balance is threatened further. So really (assuming the final roster is 35) you probably would only be seeing a few more characters if they poured all the SSE development into characters, and most people would take an (apparently quite lengthy) singleplayer over three to four characters, I'd say. Then again, this is all conjecture as we don't really even know just how long SSE is, and honestly parts are still quite mysterious. We'll have to wait for a full leak to pass judgement, but I can't see it being very disappointing.
Single player Smash for me just gives people who don't own the console an excuse for sucking. If there was no single player they would have no such excuse.

It's really, really too early to be concerned about gameplay balance. Most people haven't even gotten their hands on the thing, let alone dug deep into the character's abilites.

Yeah, most of these videos seem to be "Tournament player using Dedede vs. random guy using whoever looked neat"
I don't think you'll be getting very balanced results from that.
When the game comes out in Japan, I really hope that people are going to make high quality videos. And prefferably upload them to sites with better quality than Youtube.

I don't believe that Brawl contains every single character that Sakurai would ever consider putting into a Smash game. All game development is restricted by time, and Brawl was already behind schedule. There's no way for us to know how their original plans were affected by the deadlines, and what Sakurai would or wouldn't do if he decided to focus more on multiplayer, but it's safe to assume that either the game would have come out much earlier or we'd have more multiplayer content, i.e. characters, to show for it. No feature is ever added without a tradeoff.
If I recall correctly, shit like wavedashing wasn't discovered until months after Melee came out, so any balance judgements based on a handful of two-minute demo matches are silly.

Now I can't be certain about this for sure of course, but I'm guessing that removing aspects of the game wouldn't all of a sudden make the rest of the game better. Sakurai obviously hasn't been under any strict deadline for this game, he's had to chance to add all he's felt the need to add. If SSE was removed it'd simply cut production time and make the game come out sooner, not suddenly make all of our character wishes come true with a hugely increased roster.
The multiplayer aspect was already pretty much perfected from Melee. All he had to do was update all the graphics and animations, toss in a batch of characters and stages, spend some time ballancing them and then getting WiFi up and running. And he did do this, and it's not like he had to start cutting ideas and characters left and right to make it happen. He could've just done this and released a perfectly fine game four or so months ago and everyone would have loved it.
But this is likely Sakurai's last forray into the Smash Bros series, and he obviously wanted to expand and do more. And Subspace Emissary looks like a wonderfully complete side scroller with co-op to rival Kirby Superstar. So while I will definitely enjoy the multiplayer for years to come, I am happy I can also enjoy a new and unique way to enjoy Smash with my siblings for hours on end.
Edit: Dangit you guys, don't go making whole pages of posts while I'm in the middle of replying!

All I care about is being able to use the fucking c-stick in adventure mode.

That's a pretty good Link there - worth checking out to see how he's more fluid than in Melee.

I'm pretty much a sucker for anything co-op.

Argh! The laser was cool but I wanted to see if Ike's FS would KO at 0%.

what the hell, why is the sandbag there.
I would really love to know where the hell the story goes from there.

So does Link need to be up close to use FS? I thought he shot across the screen in one of the dojo movies but in that vid his second one was a dud.
Also I don't like moving stages much but Delfino looks great as the movement isn't really distracting from the fight.
Yeah, that's from the storyline they didn't use.

Right, right, co-op SSE (and co-op in general) is pretty much the most exciting new feature.
My Melee buddy and I have already decided to rock SSE in co-op first thing. I'm not sure if we'll even be able to fit any Brawls in there. :O
There's so much stuff to do I have no idea where I'm going to begin. O_o
Uh yeah that's my point. If Sakurai didn't really care about a story mode, he would have let that pass.
Unlocking Snake.
e: Oh hey, the characters have shadows now.
Pokemon Trainer is really interesting. Light character, medium-ish one and heavy bastard.
